These plates fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and they sometimes move. The friction caused by the movement creates earthquakes and volcanic eruptions near the edges of the plates. This process is called plate tectonics. What then is a volcano? A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure inside the volcanoes build up, eruptions occur. Gases and rocks shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lateral blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods. Volcano eruptions have been known to wipe out entire forests. An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis, flashfloods, earthquakes, mudflows and rockfalls. Volcanic ash, made of pulverized rock, can be harsh, acidic and smelly. The ash can cause damage to the lungs of older people, babies and people with respiratory problems like asthma. More than eighty percent of the earth's surface is volcanic in origin. The sea floor and some mountains were formed by numerous volcanic eruptions. Gaseous emissions from volcano formed the earth's atmosphere. There are more than one thousand five hundred active volcanoes in the world. More than half of these volcanoes are part of the 'Ring of Fire,' a region that Edubest English Programme Edubest English Programme PR2B06 5 encircles the Pacific Ocean. It is interesting to know that eighty or more of the one thousand five hundred volcanoes in the world are under the oceans. The world's largest, active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii, where famous coffee is grown in the rich volcanic soils. Mauna Loa is 13,677 feet above sea level. From its base below sea level to its summit, Mauna Loa is taller than Mount Everest. Exercise 1 Spot the mistake(s) in each sentence and correct it accordingly. 1.
