Much of the background research required to develop a good concept, logo, and information (signage) system for Harborwalk will be equally important in developing a good "brochure" to communicate and sell the idea to the general public. As our team credentials give ua a background in both endeavors, we feel that it is appropriate and desirable to submit on both. In case, administratively, you must keep the project RFQ's separate, we are submitting 20 copies so that the stated 10 copy requirement for each project is met. We are not precluding our willingness to work on only one of the projects, should you desire to select two firms. We think that you will agree that the combination of August Associates Architects, Inc. and Malcolm Grear Designers, Inc. offers a strong proven team with the management and design experience needed for these projects. August and Grear have been working together on a major systemwide signage and informational graphics project for the MBTA for almost two years now. We have also teamed up on architectural signage and graphics for three large office developments in the Boston area. The combined skills of management, architecture, planning, and urban design, and internationally acclaimed graphic design provide a "compleat" consultant package for these projects. August Associates Architects. Inc. The following material will explain our team and Its credentials more fully. It will also outline an approach to executing these projects within the time frame and budgets established. Ue are pleased to be able to present this material to you and hope we will have the opportunity to discuss it in person in the near future. Respectfully submitted, Raynor n. Warner, AIA Prinicpal P.S. While we are submitting multiple copies of our qualifications and illustrative examples of our signage work, it was not practical or affordable to be able to submit multiple copies of our brochure. One copy/ set of firm brochures is included as back up and we would be happy to bring other samples to an interview. INTRODUCTION Harborwalk will be as much a part of Boston's urban pedestrian experience as Is the Freedom Trail, for no other city In the country can match the rich history and beauty of Its waterfront. The vision and goals of Harborpark and Harborwalk are clear: planned growth and public access. In the 1984 BRA publication Harborpark , the following statement summarized the goals to produce "...important planning principles that will guide future growth and development of the waterfront; these principles endorse public access, urban design standards, and a set of public benefits — recreational, cultural, educational, and economic." Four years later, this is still a conceptual plan, but it is now coming much closer to fruition. The Request-for-Qualifications that the accompanying material is in response to, outlines some specific tasks that the design consultant must execute. While these tasks define products such as an up-to-ten-page brochure and (4) schematics of each element within the Harborwalk signage system, the consultant team making this submission believes that the tasks are much broader. We believe that the task at ;hand is to conceptualize, through graphic means, a vision and an Indentity for Harborwalk, and to communicate this vision and identity to a wide and changing audience.
