Rev Monsignor Michael Keating Dean and Administrator St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth

The word “welcome” is heard often at the Cathedral, at every Mass or service and at every tour. The Cathedral’s popularity has been amazing – not only do thousands of people come and worship and many others come to visit, or come to concerts of classical music, or use our lovely grounds for relaxation and gathering.

Large groups come from our schools, nursing homes, Probus and other groups. It is indeed a Community resource. I love to see the patients from Royal Perth Hospital who come to the Cathedral in their wheelchairs, on crutches or assisted by hospital staff or family. It must be such a joy for them to leave their hospital rooms and spend some time in our magnificent green gardens.

People of all Faiths come to pray, light a candle or just marvel at this beautiful place and find peace.

This past Holy Week has been very special as possibly Archbishop Hickey’s last Holy Week here as Archbishop of Perth. When he turned 75 in April, he was obliged to offer his resignation to the Pope. I couldn’t help thinking that as he beautifully led us at all the major Masses and services. It is our Cathedral, made possible by his foresight and courage in undertaking such a huge project. It is up to all of us to pray for him and thank God for his twenty years as Archbishop.

Since our last edition of ‘OUR CATHEDRAL’ much has happened. Four huge Masses for all the staff of our Cathedral Schools in the Archdiocese, as well as people from the Catholic Education Office. Mercedes College next to our Cathedral has filled the Cathedral several times for special Masses and services. St Patrick’s Day Mass was once again very well attended on 17 March.

Already three concerts have taken place this year – two from our Cathedral Choir and Organist and the third from WASO. Don’t miss future concerts.

Dozens of Weddings have been celebrated, funeral Masses as well and many people have been baptised and confirmed. A feature of our recent Holy Week celebrations was the baptism by immersion of several adults and the reception into the Church of others.

We attended the recently Ordination of the Priesthood of five Deacons, including Deacon Cyprian who worked here with us. Our Social Committee provided a wonderful lunch for about 350 people after his Thanksgiving Mass and about 250 Clergy enjoyed a beautiful supper after the Mass of the Oils in Holy Week - a big thank you to all concerned.

It is a well used, busy Cathedral, providing our City with an outstanding icon of worship, love and welcome.

On behalf of the Cathedral Priests, Father Jean-Noël Marie and Fr George James, both wonderful Priests and preachers, I wish you and your families every blessing.

As we begin to say farewell to Archbishop and await his successor, I do hope you will all try to help pay-off the remaining $2.4 million owing on the Cathedral.

This tax deductible donation will also be your tribute to the great work of the Archbishop, and your desire to be part of this restored and completed Cathedral in honour of Our Lady.

God bless,

Monsignor Michael Keating Dean, St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth 3 8th Celebrating the 1st Anniversary Dec of “OUR” magnificent Cathedral

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was also the joyous celebration of the 1st anniversary of the Cathedral’s re-opening, following its historic restoration and completion in 2009.

A special evening Mass attended by approximately 800 people was celebrated by Archbishop Hickey, and concelebrated by Monsignor Keating and a visiting priest from Galway.

At the conclusion of the Mass, the faithful joined in with the Novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary before a statue of Our Lady which had been placed on the Sanctuary.

Monsignor Michael Keating, Dean, St Mary’s Cathedral said:

“St Mary’s Cathedral, as it is commonly known, is actually named in honour of Our Lady – The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This was an opportunity for us to join together to give thanks to Our Lady for her many blessings, especially helping achieve the historic completion of the magnificent Cathedral which bears her name.

Music was provided by the Cathedral Choir accompanied by Jacinta Jakovcevic, the Cathedral’s Director of Music. So many people commented to me afterwards how much they enjoyed the beautiful singing which helped make this celebration such a memorable occasion.

After Mass, boys from the Choir helped the Archbishop cut a “1st birthday celebration cake” and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to St Mary’s Cathedral”.

4 As a special birthday surprise, we are delighted to present some of the beautiful photographs of St Mary’s Cathedral taken by leading Western Australian photographer, Ron Tan.

6 12th Ecumenical Prayer Service Feb for Martyrs of the Middle East

In a moving ceremony on the morning of 12 February 2011 at St Mary’s Cathedral, a special service was held to commemorate the killing of 24 parishioners of the St Mark and St Peter Coptic Orthodox Church in Alexandria, Egypt.

A powerful bomb was exploded outside the Church just as parishioners were leaving a special midnight Mass on the first of January 2011. In addition to those killed, sadly more than 100 people were left injured following the suspected terrorist attack.

Fr Abram Abdelmalek, Priest in Charge of Perth’s Coptic Orthodox Community, gave a passionate and emotional speech to those in attendance, decrying the massacre.

Archbishop Hickey and Members of other denominations present, joined in prayer for the local Coptic Orthodox community here in Perth, and those in Egypt, that they may experience the peace and consolation of the Lord during this difficult time of tragedy.

Perth’s Founding Bishop 18th Feb to come “Home”

Perth’s first Bishop has come home, 140 years after he died in France.

Archbishop Barry Hickey and Fr Robert Cross travelled to France to meet with relatives of Bishop John Brady in January 2011, and gained their permission to bring Bishop Brady’s remains home from a French provincial graveyard in the village of Amélie-Les- Bains in Southern France.

Upon locating the Bishop’s grave, Archbishop Hickey led three decades of the Rosary; one in Gaelic, one in French and one in English.

When Lorna and Paddy Lavelle, great-great-grand-niece and her husband saw the grave for the first time, they were quite moved.

Fr Cross returned to Amélie-Les-Bains in March with a fellow archaeologist, historian and medical doctor to exhume the remains of Bishop Brady. It was uncertain if any human remains would be found after 140 years of burial, however the team was rewarded with success.

Bishop Brady will be re-interred in a special ceremony later this year in the new Crypt and Mausoleum at St Mary’s Cathedral.

That will mean that all but one of Perth’s serving Bishops and will be laid to rest together.

7 22nd Feb A Visionary Visits the Cathedral

Mr Ivan Dragicevic, one of six visionaries of the alleged apparitions of Medjugorje in Bosnia-Hercegovina, addressed a capacity crowd at St Mary’s Cathedral.

For those of you who may not have heard of Medjugorje....

On June 24, 1981, six children in the town of Medjugorje, began to experience phenomena which they alleged to be apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This apparition had a message of peace for the world, as well as a call to conversion, prayer and fasting. It entrusted to the children secret messages about future events. These ‘secrets’ confided individually to different visionaries, have never been revealed to the general public.

The apparitions themselves have allegedly continued almost daily since 1981, with some of the now young adults continuing to experience them regularly and others not.

Originally they occurred on a hilltop where a large Cross commemorating the Redemption exists, however they are alleged to have occurred wherever the visionaries happen to be located at the time of each apparition.

The evening of prayer at St Mary’s Cathedral began at 6.00pm with the Rosary.

Soon after, kneeling before the altar in the Chapel of Our Lady, Ivan received an alleged apparition. The congregation looked on in silence. At the conclusion Ivan simply made the sign of the Cross, arose and took his place in the front pew before the Sanctuary.

Father Timothy Deeter gave Benediction and Mass followed.

Appeal Manager’s Note: Ivan, married with three children, dedicates his time to spreading the message of Our Lady with an emphasis on family life and youth in our time. He and his family live half of the year in Medjugorje and the other half of the year in the United States. At the present moment, Rome has not made a formal pronouncement on the alleged apparitions. In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI set up a commission of enquiry into the authenticity of the alleged apparitions of Medjugorje.

When the 6.3 magnitude earthquake devastated Christchurch on 22 February 2011, the images which flashed across our television screens were almost unimaginable.

So much destruction and loss. So many people lost family members, friends and loved ones as a result of the tragedy.

Among the many casualties was Neil Stocker, a valued friend of St Mary’s Cathedral.

Neil was the foreman at the South Island Organ Company which oversaw the dismantling, restoration and eventual reinstallation of the historic Pipe Organ at St Mary’s Cathedral.

At the time of the earthquake, Neil was hard at work with two other workmates, dismantling yet another organ at the Methodist Mission Church in Durham St, Christchurch.

All were lost.

Archbishop Hickey extended his condolences to Neil’s grieving family and asked the loving Lord to be near them, and all the people of Christchurch, during this time of tragedy.

We ask you to remember Neil, his family and the people of Christchurch in your prayers.

A little piece of history returns...

One of the magnificently refurbished rooms in the newly restored Cathedral Presbytery, is the historic “Chapter Hall”.

Built in the time of Archbishop Prendiville, in its early days, Chapter Hall was where the Archbishop would meet with his Clergy. However, in recent years, Chapter Hall had been used to accommodate the Archdiocesan Archives, until its relocation to Highgate in 2007.

Today, Chapter Hall is once again being used for its original purpose.

Late 2010, the Archbishop met with his Council of Priests in Chapter Hall. Thanks to Father Robert Cross, we have this photo to record the historic moment.

Appeal Manager’s Note: Whilst the Cathedral Presbytery’s restoration was not in any way a part of the restoration and completion of St Mary’s Cathedral, I thought readers would be interested in this story. The Cathedral Presbytery is “home” for the Archbishop, the Dean of St Mary’s Cathedral and his Assistant Priests. It accommodates visiting Clergy from around Australia and overseas, and has a number of private meeting rooms. The Cathedral Presbytery is also used as a wonderful venue for special functions and events in support of St Mary’s Cathedral and the Archdiocese.

10 Newly Ordained concelebrate Mass for first time with Archbishop Hickey.

Celebrating the Ordination of 4th March Five New Priests

It was a beautiful Friday evening, St Mary’s Cathedral was filled to capacity with family, friends, parishioners and fellow priests, all gathered to witness and celebrate the joyous Ordinations of Deacons:- Anibal Leite da Cunha, Emmanuel Dimobi, Cyprian Shikokoti, Daniel Boyd and Quynh Huy Nhat Do.

Archbishop Barry Hickey presided over the Ordination of the five Deacons to the Priesthood.

During his Homily, Archbishop Hickey preached on the Gospel story of the three temptations of Jesus in the desert. He reminded the new priests that the reality of a priest’s life will include many temptations. He exhorted them to respond to such moments in the same way Jesus did; obedience to the Will of the Father.

Ordination celebrations are a wonderful reminder for us all that we should give thanks to God for the gift which priests make, in giving their lives for the service of His people.

We pray for our newly Ordained that they will always be bearers of the light of Christ. Archbishop Hickey lays hands on Deacon Quynh during the Ordination ceremony.

11 Our second Holy Week in the beautifully Holy Week restored Cathedral was simply outstanding, with more than 12,000 people attending Services in the Cathedral from Palm (Passion) Sunday to Easter Sunday.

The Mass of the Oils on the Tuesday attended by 200 Priests and Deacons was moving and beautiful. I suspect many Priests wished to be with Archbishop Hickey at what might have been his last Mass of the Oils as Archbishop.

The Cathedral Social Committee put on a wonderful supper for about 300 Clergy and other guests – all the food and drink was provided by the Cathedral Parishioners – thank you to all concerned. Holy Week in the Cathedral Holy Week in the Cathedral

A highlight of the Saturday Easter Vigil, besides the candles lighting up the darkened Cathedral at the beginning, after the Easter fire had been lit outside, was the Baptism by immersion of several adults. This is the first time the Cathedral has had the facility of the Baptism by immersion.

The Choir sang magnificently especially the Hallelujah Chorus of Handel and the Cathedral lay out was perfect for the ceremonies and the huge crowds could see what was happening.

Our Archbishop was the main Celebrant and as usual, presided with dignity. All in all an amazing Holy Week in St Mary’s. Thanks to all who made it so.

21st Mar Bishop Brady Found in France

On the 12th of March 2011, Father Robert Cross accompanied by Father Jean-Noël Marie, Dr Michael Shanahan and (our favourite newlyweds) Mr & Mrs Odhran and Jade O’Brien, set out from Perth to the South of France on a unique expedition... a modern day quest if you will.

The group, rather appropriately dubbed the ‘Brady Bunch’, left to uncover the grave site of Perth’s 1st Bishop and bring back whatever remains could be discovered to be reinterred at St Mary’s Cathedral.

After a week of painstaking work, digging carefully, the efforts of the group were rewarded with the exciting discovery of a zinc lined coffin and what appeared to be a complete skeleton inside.

And so, after 140 years, Bishop Brady has returned home to the Diocese he founded.

He will join the other Bishops of Perth in the new Crypt and Mausoleum at St Mary’s Cathedral following a special reinterment ceremony to be Outline of the top lid of the coffin wherein the remains held later in the year. of Bishop Brady were buried.

17 4th April Vale Brian Gardner

At the recent funeral of Mr Brian Gardner, more than 800 family members, friends, loved ones and colleagues gathered to say their ‘goodbyes’.

Mr Gardner, who passed away quietly at home aged 77 after many years of illness, was a prominent and respected business and community leader, and a generous philanthropist who supported many worthwhile organisations and causes, including our own St Mary’s Cathedral Appeal.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jean, his wife of 37 years, and their six (6) children.

Mr Gardner is perhaps best known for establishing Brian Gardner Motors in 1978 and operating the iconic Rottnest Hotel for almost 16 years. His sons, John and Paul, will continue to build on their father’s legacy, presiding over four dealerships here in Perth.

In a statement posted by the West Australian Newspaper, John Gardner said, in part: “In the last 10 or 12 years, his greatest joy has been his 10 grandchildren. He wasn’t into golfing or fishing, his passion was his mates”.

21 Appeal Manager’s Report

An Enduring Tribute to Archbishop Hickey

Dear Friends,

At the time of writing this message for our newsletter, we have just celebrated the 2nd Holy Week at “our” Cathedral, since its magnificent restoration and completion.

My family and I attended Easter Sunday Mass at the Cathedral this year, and it was truly wonderful. From Monsignor Keating’s emotional Homily, to the smiles on the faces of the children as they were called forward to receive a chocolate Easter egg, it was such a joyous celebration.

Amongst the prayers, singing and reflection, I also took a few minutes to take a good look around the Cathedral - it’s amazing ceilings, the beauty of the stained glass windows, how light fills the space, how fantastic the organ sounded, how many people were there on that particular morning enjoying Mass together.

I also took a few moments to reflect on Archbishop Hickey’s recent announcement of his retirement, and what a wonderful legacy he leaves in this magnificent Cathedral.

1862 1905 1930 2008 2011

There is no question that it was the Archbishop’s vision, courage and leadership which made the dream of completing St Mary’s Cathedral a reality.

We have now raised $30.3 million of the required $32.9 million total restoration and completion cost.

We therefore require an additional $2.6 million.

“OUR” Archbishop Barry James Hickey has faithfully served God and the people of Western Australia for more than 50 years as a Priest, the past 20 years as Bishop.

As an enduring tribute, an expression of our collective gratitude and respect, let us join together to raise this remaining $2.6 million, and help realise the Archbishop’s dream of “completing” St Mary’s Cathedral.

Today, I call on Members of the Clergy, parishioners, parishes, schools, Religious Orders, multicultural organisations and businesses in the Archdiocese of Perth, as well as members of the general public to...... rally for one final fundraising effort!

Donations are tax deductible and opportunity still exists for Leadership Gift Donors ( gifts or pledges $10,000 and above) to be included in the Recognition Memorial to be erected later this year at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Please be generous with your gifts.

Thank you and God bless,

Brett A Mendez Appeal Manager
