  • Masculinity in Emo Music a Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Social Science in Candi
CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity. Keywords: emo, synergistic masculinity, performativity, music video, masculinities, lyrics, vocal production, musical syntax, dynamics. ABSTRAIT Emo est un genre musical qui implique typiquement des musiciens de sexe masculine et qui est issu de movement punk et hardcore originaire de Washington DC durant les années 80.

The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. Rhymes and Linkin Park recently collaborated on “We Made It,” the first single and video from Rhymes’ upcoming album, Blessed. By touring together, Linkin Park & Busta are taking a cue from the chorus of their song: “…we took it on the road…”. As recently pointed out in Rolling Stone’s “Summer Tour Guide,” the tour will see nine acts joining rock superstars Linkin Park, who are also offering concertgoers a digital souvenir pack that includes a recording of the band’s entire set. As the band’s co-lead vocalist Mike Shinoda told the magazine, “That puts extra pressure on us to make sure our set is different every night.” The fifth installation of Linkin Park’s raging road show will see them headlining an all-star bill that features former Soundgarden/Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, electro-rockers The Bravery and Ashes Divide featuring Billy Howerdel, known for his work with A Perfect Circle.

This Ain’t a Scene, It’s a Buzzer Race Sadboys are temporary. Sad trumpets are forever. Written by Brian Luong Tossups: 1. This band’s extensive and impressive merchandise catalogue can be attributed to guitarist Nick Steinhardt’s side occupation as a graphic designer. A live EP following this band’s sophomore studio album was titled Live on BBC Radio 1 and featured vocals from Jordan Dreyer of La Dispute. It’s not Red Hot Chili Peppers, but this band’s distinct asterisk-shaped logo was meant to evoke converging road markings leading to a sunset, and was first used in promotional artwork for the band’s second album, with that album’s initials “PTSBBAM” arranged in the negative spaces of the logo. This band’s 2016 single “Palm Dreams” was described by their frontman as a song about his inability to ask his mother about why she moved to California after she passed. The album from which that single is taken, as a whole, deals with themes of frontman Jeremy Bolm grieving the loss of his mother due to cancer. For 10 points, give the name of this Los Angeles-based post-hardcore band, which you may know from the albums Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me and Stage Four. ANSWER: Touché Amoré 2. • Middle Class Music in Suburban Nowhere Land: Emo and the Performance of Masculinity
MIDDLE CLASS MUSIC IN SUBURBAN NOWHERE LAND: EMO AND THE PERFORMANCE OF MASCULINITY Matthew J. Aslaksen A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Becca Cragin Angela Nelson ii Abstract Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Emo is an emotional form that attracts a great deal of ridicule from much of the punk and indie music communities. Emo is short for “emotional punk” or “emotional hardcore,” but because of the amount of evolution it has undergone it has become a very difficult genre to define. This genre is well known for its almost whiny sound and its preoccupation with relationship problems and emotional instability. As a result, it is seen by many within the more underground music community as an inauthentic emotionally indulgent form of music. Emo has also very recently become a form that has gained widespread mainstream media appeal with bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday, and My Chemical Romance. It is generally consumed by a younger teenaged to early college audience, and it is largely performed by suburban middle class artists. Overall, I have argued that emo represents challenge to conventional norms of hegemonic middle-class masculinity, a challenge which has come about as a result of feelings of discontent with the emotional repression of this masculinity. In this work I have performed multiple interviews that include both performers and audience members who participate in this type of music. The questions that I ask the subjects of my ethnographic research focus on the meaning of this particular performance to both the audience and performers.
