O FǕǜǙǨ CǥǜǠǑ The most popular feature of the cathedral in Paderborn, Germany is an early 16th century carving that frames a window in the courtyard’s cloister. It shows three hares chasing one another. Each has two ears, although a total of only three are visible. (A sculpted reproduction is shown here.) Sarah Coakley, an Anglican theologian once at Cambridge and now a visiting fellow at the Australian Catholic ǒǩ FǢ. MǑǤǤ O’TǟǟǜǕ University, in an essay on the Trinity referenced this curious medallion: “A memorable trio of mad March hares from Paderborn Cathedral … their confused circular flurry … the uniting of the three via their ecstatic dance of interaction and delight. The ears of the hares form a perfect divine triangle, even as their movement constantly keeps the figures turning and bringing new perspectives to the fore. By using a figure of nature, rather than the more common gendered anthropomorphisms of the Trinity, the sculpture injects the idea of divine intra-trinitarian delight, careless frolicking, and even erotic excess, all the while holding the movement within its circular frame.” The late medieval imagination for conceptualizing the Trinity proves to be creative and maybe, if we accept Coakley’s interpretation of the three hares, a bit risqué. But this insight about God is reflective of our Christian anthropology, isn’t it? Our belief that God is Three in One captures authentic human nature; namely, that true individuality is founded on our relationships, our interconnectedness. In these days of quarantine and social distancing notice how much we strive to be with others. Yes, there are valuable experiences to be gained by our solitary moments, but we keep coming back to the notion that we know ourselves best by the associations we cultivate. The dynamism of the Godhead – Father, Son and Spirit – is a community of Persons forming one divine Being. How unholy the scenes in our country of been lately with the riots and protests. They reveal our lack of community, trust, interdependence, and love for one another. The anxiety of these days has been generated by our distance from communion with God. There’s something those frolicking mad hares from Paderborn know better than we do. A Special Note of Thanks I was overwhelmed on Saturday, May 23 by the parade past the rectory to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. It was a joy to see so many parishioners express their good wishes and to read the literally hundreds of messages written. Thank you to the organizers of the event. I was touched and very much affirmed by your expressions of love. I love being a priest, and I thank God for the vocation to which He has called me. It’s great to be at St. Margaret of Scotland at this ‘mile marker’ in life! Please remember to pray for holy vocations in the Church. Tljdž SǐǍdžǎǏNJǕǚ ǐLJ Ǖljdž MǐǔǕ HǐǍǚ TǓNJǏNJǕǚ Gathering Hymn Text: Brian Wren Tune: PROSPECT How Wonderful the Three in One How wonderful the Three-in-One, whose energies of dancing light are undivided, pure and good, communing love in shared delight. Before the flow of dawn and dark, Creation's Lover dreamed of earth, and with a caring deep and wise, all things conceived and brought to birth. The Lover's own Belov'd, in time, between a cradle and a cross, at home in flesh, gave love and life to heal our brokenness and loss. Their Equal Friend all life sustains with greening power and loving care, and calls us, born again by grace, in Love's communing life to share. How wonderful the Living God: Divine Beloved, Empow'ring Friend, Eternal Lover, Three-in-One, our hope's beginning, way and end. Gloria chant Glory to God in the high-est, / and on earth peace to peo-ple of good will. We praise you, we bless you, / we a-dore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks / for your great glory, Lord God, heav-enly King, / O God, almight-y Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Be-got-ten Son, / Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, / have mer-cy on us; you take away the sins of the world, / re-ceive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Fa-ther, / have mer-cy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, / you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spir-it, / in the glory of God the Father. Amen First Reading Exodus 34: 4b-6, 8-9 Early in the morning Moses went up Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him, taking along the two stone tablets. Having come down in a cloud, the LORD stood with Moses there and proclaimed his name, "LORD." Thus the LORD passed before him and cried out, "The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity." Moses at once bowed down to the ground in worship. Then he said, "If I find favor with you, O Lord, do come along in our company. This is indeed a stiff-necked people; yet pardon our wickedness and sins, and receive us as your own." ! Responsorial Psalm Daniel 3: 52-56 Sung Glory, glory, glory and praise for ever; Glory, glory, glory and praise for ever. Recited Glory, glory, glory and praise for ever; Glory, glory, glory and praise for ever. Second Reading Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss.
