Rabbi Meir Cohen’s Table Talk
I have spent a good deal of time in and around the 'schoolyard'. I have witnessed my fair share of petty conflicts that occur among children at play. Virtually each conflict is based on a misunderstanding of the situation, or the other person's point of view, or a stubborn view of right and wrong. This is normal in children since their maturity level forces an inward, selfish focus. Our job as educators is to use those moments to 'open' the minds of children to see other perspectives of the world surrounding them. As they mature and become adults, we hope these grown ups will be able to see beyond themselves and act with others in mind, avoiding or correcting petty conflict.
As the leaders of a Nation, adult sons of Yaakov should be mature and able to understand perspectives beyond themselves. Yet right from the beginning of this parsha, it seems that Yosef is acting like a child. In fact, the passuk points that out, "and he was a young lad" (although he was already 17). He tattles on the sons of Leah after they embarrass the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah. Yaakov’s reaction to such playground antics is not to correct through an understanding of perspective but an enforce- ment of the conflict: He gives Yosef a Keronis Pasim to show his favoritism! What is going on with these brothers and why did Yaa- kov act in a way that would just invite the conflict further rather than trying to solve it?
