Dr. Kirit Parikh for selecting the right and most deserving engineers for these particular awards. I also thank my other friend Dr. Mashelker for be- ing a part of the Jury to select these two great individuals, as role models for the engineers. The engineers have great ideas in their mind. The engineers are the key to the management of the country in the long run. Engineering has the dominant influence in life in all fields. The building structure is very important, design is very important and the responsibility of engineer is very crucial. Engineers’ responsibility is very important to the society as well as to the structures which they create. The engineer should use natural resources which we have enough, as far as possible and plan their usage optimally and judicially. Dr. Kohli was the CMD of PFC and had set a very good example in managing the financial organisation. Dr. Kirit Parikh is also a very accomplished engineer, having worked in various departments. The Jury have rightfully se- lected Mr. Mukesh Ambani and Dr. Tessy Thomas both being successful leaders in their fields, and are known for their innovative outlook and diligence in their work. They have the ability to churn out novel ideas for ensuring success in their work domains, within record time. This they have proven many times is many projects. Acceptance Speech of Shri Mukesst Ambani Shri Umesh Upadhyay, President and Director, Reliance Media read acceptance speech of Shri Mukesh Ambani:

After addressing all the dignitaries, he started as: I am honoured to the part of this prestigious ceremony today. I am thank- ful to ECI for giving this opportunity to me. I am humbled to accept this award. I believe that the engineers are ultimate chain cadets and they have the burning desire to convert them in to reality. I admire ECI for its mandate for enhancing the image of engineers in the society. I understand the value and accountability of engineers. We are going today through a difficult time. Engineers have the responsibility to be a part of the solution to the Global Crisis. Engineers, all over the world, are trying to solve this problem and I am proud to be a part of this. I accept this award today on behalf of thousands of engineers, who are part of Reliance Family, working with unshakable faith for this country. I take this opportunity to recommit Reliance family to be apart in building a new India. Thank you very much.

Acceptance speech of Dr. Tessy Thomas After addressing all the dignitaries, she started as: At the outset I would like to covey my thanks to the Engineering Coun- cil of India and the Jury members for considering me for this prestigious award. It is indeed a great honour to receive Emi- nent Engineer Award 2020. This recognition in the presence of such a distinguished gathering is really memorable for me. It goes without saying that a nation’s development and prosperity is judged by the status of Science and Technology and the engineering innovations of that country. Our great visionaries always promoted science and technology and accorded top priority to them for the economic development of the country. It is the sustained efforts of our engineers which has made our country, an emerging power and prepared us in the space and nuclear technology. When I look back 33 years ago, as a junior scientists of RCA, DRDO, Hyderabad, when there was total embargo on our country for the cutting edge technology by the western world, this embargo was actually a blessing in disguise. Under the leadership of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, we developed intermediate range Ballistic Missiles with indigenous resources. Scientific Research is directly linked to the creative minds. Innovations and scientific discoveries are based on new ideas. Engineers makeup the core of innovative developments and play an increasingly crucial role in adoption of new ideas in science and technology. I am fortunate to lead the team, as a Project Director, making the core and missions of the Agni missile development pro- gramme. Having competed the mission of strategic systems, I then moved to Bangalore as Director General Aeronautical Systems, dealing with Aero Space Systems. Under the mission of Aatm-nirbhar Bharat of the , In- dia is becoming a major exporter of arms instead of a large importer. With numerous developments in the field of Robot- ics, Artificial Intelligence, Bio-technology, Quantum Computing etc. the scientific world is challenged by the innovations and creativity and their outcome. The government’s policies are providing directions and support for indigenous develop- ment of systems and equipment within the country. It is the responsibility of engineers and young generation to come for- ward and take up the challenge and develop start-ups whole heartedly to make our nation self-dependent. I am sure that the ECI, in fulfilling its responsibilities, is working for the development of working professionals in India in association with its members. I am really happy to be the recipient of this prestigious Eminent Engineer’s Award 20202. I thank again ECI and to the Jury for inviting me and making me be a part of this function. Thank you. “Jai Hind”

Job Opportunities in Japan- for IT, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering Streams Dear Student,

The rapidly aging population coupled with a massive requirement for trained manpower makes Japan, the technolog- ical and economic superpower the most ideal location to work in. There is a massive requirement of engineering pro- fessionals in various engineering disciplines. This requirement is expected to grow larger in the coming days. Candi- dates with the required proficiency in Japanese language as well as with the customary Japanese etiquette skills and norms, are very much respected and preferred. Engineering Council of India (ECI) and SilverPeak Global (I) Pvt Ltd (SPG), have tied up so as to enable candidates from professional Engineering courses in India, to learn the relevant Languages, attain relevant technical skills and gain meaningful employment there, In Japan, SilverPeak Global will enable and act as a facilitator in this endeavour. The Engineering Council of India aids SilverPeak Global in identify- ing and enabling candidates to apply and avail benefits associated with this program. Once a student registers and starts paying the fees, his job is secured by SPG. ECI will ensure that the interests of the applicants are safe- guarded by SPG, in conformity with the agreements, if applied through ECI and if not impacted by the appli- cant’s own conduct.

In the 1st phase, there is a confirmed requirement of 120 nos in IT, 30 in Electronics and 30 in Mechanical areas for Japan. The skills sets required, the process of selection, fees, training duration etc. are as reflected and mentioned in the Brochure-Jobs in Japan. The Application Form is also available at website of ECI. SPG has also tied up with an agency to provide finance on loan, up to Rs 6 lakhs of the total fees, which would be paid by the applicant, once he/she is employed. The Indian Engineer ENGINEERING COUNCIL OF INDIA April, 2021 Page 6 Registration of Professional Engineers

1) Introduction Registration of Professional Engineers, Associate Professional Engineers, Student Engineers, and some other cate- gories on a voluntary basis is going on since December 01, 2015.

Member Associations (MAs) have a major role to play as they call for applications, screen them through their set up National Committees (NCs) for respective fields/disciplines of engineering. These NC give their recommenda- tions to the Board of Registration of Professional Engineers (BRPE) set up by ECI.

2) Benefits of Registering The Registration, enhances the credibility and image of the Engineer. His/her acceptance by industry, institutions, clients and other organisations goes up when he/she mentions the fact of this registration as PE (or APE or SE) which distinguishes him/her from those who are not registered. We are informing the various government depart- ments, public sector organisations, local authorities, industry associations regarding the National Register.

Specifically, it will result in; (i) Better credibility and possibility to make use of the branding of ECI and concerned Member Associations, as the names are being listed on the website (ii) Using the Certificate of Registration as PE in the National Register as a part of CV, and (iii) Better prospects for assignments/jobs after this is publicised to client/employer organisations.

3) National Registers There are separate National Registers for (i) Professional Engineer (PE), (ii) Associate Professional Engineer (APE), (iii) Apprentice/Graduate Engineers (ApE), (iv) Junior Apprentice Engineer (JrApE), (v) Student Engineer (SE) and (vi) Diploma/B.Voc Student Engineer (DiSE). There are separate National Registers under each category for different engineering fields/disciplines: Construction, Consulting, IT, Computers/ Telecom/Civil /Electrical/ Mechanical/ Chemical/Mining/Metallurgy/Industrial/Aeronautical Engineering, etc. The details and Criteria for registration under each category, Disciplines and Code of Ethics which the applicant has to sign, are given on the website www.ecindia.org

4) Categories and Fee Initial registration fee is Rs. 3000 for PE, Rs. 2000 for APE, App. E & Jr. App. E and Rs. 1000 for SE plus applica- ble GST. And for other categories, the fee is Rs. 2000. plus the applicable GST. The fee structure is subject to change in future. The registration is subject to renewal after 5 years.

5) Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Each PE/APE is expected to meet minimum CPD requirement before being considered for registration or renewal of registration. Nature of the programmes constituting CPD activities and credit hours to be earned are given on the website www.ecindia.org. It is the aggregate of credit hours earned in 5-years that will determine as to whether a PE has secured at least 250 credit hours within his/her five years’ registration validity period or not, for re- registration. Mas have a major role in organising the CPD programmes for respective disciplines. As due to Covid pandemic, as most of PEs/APEs would not have been able to undergo CPD in 2020 and the possibility in 2021 is also limited, the Board for Registration of Professional Engineers (BRPE) has decided that (i) Requirement of CPD for all registered engineers, excluding Sr. PE category, be extended by 3 years, (ii) Requirement of CPD for all Sr PEs be waived altogether, as at their age, they cannot be expected to undergo CPD and (iii) Existing registration for all SrPEs/PEs/APEs be renewed on comple- tion of 5 years by payment of same fee as they paid for initial registration.
