The theme of the artwork is: “Remembrance (the poppies), Faith (the Cross) and Hope( the sunlight)”. 1 RAILS BY THE SEA 2 RAILS BY THE SEA In what ways was the development of the seaside miniature railway influenced by the seaside spectacle and individual endeavour from 1900 until the present day? University of York Department of History September 2012 3 Abstract Little academic research has been undertaken concerning Seaside Miniature Railways as they fall outside more traditional subjects such as standard gauge and narrow gauge railway history and development. This dissertation is the first academic study on the subject and draws together aspects of miniature railways, fairground and leisure culture. It examines their history from their inception within the newly developing fairground culture of the United States towards the end of the 19th. century and their subsequent establishment and development within the UK. The development of the seaside and fairground spectacular were the catalysts for the establishment of the SMR in the UK. Their development was largely due to two individuals, W. Bassett-Lowke and Henry Greenly who realized their potential and the need to ally them with a suitable site such as the seaside resort. Without their input there is no doubt that SMRs would not have developed as they did. When they withdrew from the culture subsequent development was firmly in the hands of a number of individual entrepreneurs. Although embedded in the fairground culture they were not totally reliant on it which allowed them to flourish within the seaside resort even though the traditional fairground was in decline. -
Simon Robertshas Photographed Every British Pleasure Pier There Is
Simon Roberts has photographed every British pleasure pier there is – and several that there aren’t. Overleaf, Francis Hodgson celebrates this devotion to imperilled treasures 14 15 here are 58 surviving pleasure piers in Britain and Simon Roberts has photographed them all. He has also photographed some of the vanished ones, as you can see from his picture of Shanklin Pier on the Isle of Wight (on page 21), destroyed in the great storm which did so much damage in southern England on October 16, 1987. Roberts is a human geographer by training, and his study of piers is a natural development of his previous major work, We English, which looked at the changing patterns of leisure in a country in which a rising population and decreasing mass employment mean that more of us have more time upon our hands than ever before. We tend to forget that holidays are a relatively new phenomenon, but it was only after the Bank Holiday Act of 1871 that paid leave gradually became the norm, and cheap, easily reachable leisure resorts a necessity. Resorts were commercial propositions, and the pier was often a major investment to draw crowds. Chapman Bournemouth University, Bournemouth, UK ABSTRACT: Victorian seaside piers are icons of British national identity and a fundamental component of seaside resorts. Nevertheless, these important markers of British heritage are under threat: in the early 20th century nearly 100 piers graced the UK coastline, but almost half have now gone. Piers face an uncertain future: 20% of piers are currently deemed ‘at risk’. Seaside piers are vital to coastal communities in terms of resort identity, heritage, employment, community pride, and tourism. Research into the sustainability of these iconic structures is a matter of urgency. This paper examines best practice in pier regeneration projects that are successful and self-sustaining. The paper draws on four case studies of British seaside piers that have recently undergone, or are currently being, regenerated: Weston Super-Mare Grand pier; Hastings pier; Southport pier; and Penarth pier. This study identifies critical success factors in pier regeneration and examines the socio-economic sustainability of seaside piers. 1 INTRODUCTION This paper focuses on British seaside piers. Seaside pleasure piers are an uniquely British phenomena, being developed from the early 19th century onwards as landing jetties for the holidaymakers arriving at the resorts via paddle steamers. As seaside resorts developed, so too did their piers, transforming by the late 19th century into places for middle-class tourists to promenade, and by the 20th century as hubs of popular entertainment: the pleasure pier. -

It has been a privilege to serve this remarkable institution in Tthis time - a period which has encompassed quite extraordinary change, not least in the newly merged boroughs of Brighton and Hove being declared as a city. Such municipal status has been emblematic of an energy for development, on many fronts, that ushers in myriad schemes for building and conversion which the Regency Society and its officers have a distinct role to play in accessing the architectural merits and sensitivities of such change and growth. These are exciting, if challenging, times. The built environment of Brighton and Hove has emerged in phases of distinct and notable styles - from our eponymous Regency, through Victorian and Edwardian epochs, significant elements of 20th century modernism, the bold and sweeping educational expansion of the 1960s, which brought us the University of Sussex, and now a much heightened general interest in new architecture, and a revived celebratory status for a range of individual architects and their practices. -

Executive Summary Morecambe and Heysham in the Promenade to Port Coastal Community Team (CCT) area have an outstanding coastal environment with spectacular views of the Lake District fells and fantastic sunsets. As former seaside resort, it has a rich heritage that continues today and tourism remains an important part of the economy. The presentation of all monitoring features into these catchment maps will assist in developing an integrated approach to catchment management and operation. The water quality monitoring maps and index were originally incorporated into the Catchment Action Plans. They provide a visual presentation of monitored sites within a catchment and enable water quality data to be accessed easily by all departments and external organisations. The maps bring together information from different sections within Water Quality. The routine river monitoring and tidal water monitoring points, the licensed waste disposal sites and the monitored effluent discharges (pic, non-plc, fish farms, COPA Variation Order [non-plc and pic]) are plotted. The type of discharge is identified such as sewage effluent, dairy factory, etc. Additionally, river impact and control sites are indicated for significant effluent discharges. If the watercourse is not sampled then the location symbol is qualified by (*). Additional details give the type of monitoring undertaken at sites (ie chemical, biological and algological) and whether they are analysed for more specialised substances as required by: a. EC Dangerous Substances Directive b. EC Freshwater Fish Water Quality Directive c. DOE Harmonised Monitoring Scheme d. DOE Red List Reduction Programme c. -

Brighton Area Buswatch A branch of Bus Users (formerly Bus Users UK) representing local bus users Buswatch News – January 2020 Bus fares special – Changes explained Fares on all bus services within Brighton & Hove changed this month. Most changes mean higher fares but some short distance fares were reduced and a few were unchanged. Stagecoach fares went up first, on 5 January followed by Brighton & Hove and other operators on 14 January. On Stagecoach buses the standard single fare within the Brighton & Hove fare zone is now £2.55. A return costs £4.40, and a day ticket Just 10p more, but travel a few stops beyond Shoreham High Street and the fares from Brighton almost double to £4.90 single or £8.20 return. The best value fare is undoubtedly the £2.50 evening ticket valid after 1900, which is unchanged. Spare a thought for bus users in Worthing who pay £6.20 for a Worthing area day ticket, almost £2 more than Stagecoach charges in Brighton & Hove and £1 more than on Brighton & Hove Buses in the City Saver area. Brighton & Hove Bus Company fares are also adopted by Metrobus and by Compass and The Big Lemon within the city whose services run under contract to Brighton & Hove City Council. The best news is that some short hop fares have been reduced from £2 or £2.20 to £1.90. However, the distance covered by the £1.90 fare varies considerably. From Brighton Marina £1.90 takes you Just one stop to Lidl on a 7 or 23, while it covers two miles east to Rottingdean on a 14B or 47 (and also from Marine Gate on a 12, 12A, 14, 14C or 27), or all around Whitehawk on the 21A.
