MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL PRESIDENT

ahatma Gandhi once said that "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." The world is rapidly Mchanging, and the world has become smaller due to the lightening speed news. To keep up the change, what shall we do as a leader?

This year JCI released the 2019 - 2023 Strategic Plan and identified the world is changing fast. JCI Movement has been impacting the world for more than 100 years; we kept evolving from time to time. In the digital age, technology transforms the way we are living, the millennial urge for quick response and significant impact. Therefore JCI urges us to accelerate the transformation to embrace the next wave of change.

Recent years, JCI Hong Kong and 21 local chapters made use of the Active Citizen Framework. We examined the community needs, formulate a sustainable solution, and take actions to create a better society. Through this movement, we enable members to create different projects every year to respond to community needs timely.

As a worldwide leadership development youth organization, empowering youth leaders and preparing them to create impact is our mission. I believe that creating young leader provides a long-lasting and sustainable source to change the world. Because if everyone has a mindset of creating a better future, we can eventually have the everlasting peace.

Member of JCI Hong Kong, next year will be our 70th Anniversary. It is the time for everyone to review our past, evaluate works we have done and set off and start another amazing journey of being an active citizen.

Let's keep changing the world together and create a better future!

Zenith Lin National President JCI Hong Kong

Making the matter worse, with the over-focusing on examinations, students developed to be more towards utilitarianism. Student’s focus were merely on examinations and grades, ignoring everything outside the syllabus. Professor Sung expressed his disappointment towards students, as some medical students often ask him whether the materials taught in class will be in the examination; with the future responsibility to save lives, students should learn not just for the grades on their transcript. We should reiterate the objective of education, and that should never be the score. “This may not be purely their fault, but certainly an issue we have to address.”

Technology changed learning culture Adding to utilitarianism, the technology era has made things going on a very different direction. The Internet may have made information more accessible, and connecting the world; the thirst and patience for in-depth knowledge may have been sacrificed. Prof Sung recalled that, when he was a student, he and his classmate would go to the library to search for information about a specific topic to study and have a deep understanding on the matter.

Sadly today, the access to information has become too convenient, within a matter of seconds, students could acquire information globally, resulting in an intellectual fast-food culture, meaning students no longer have the will to dig deeper for a well-established in-depth knowledge base. Adding to the algorithm we have on social media, people could only reach posts and news of similar stance or interests, pushing forward a more bipolar society.

Worse still, with everyone heads down on their phone, our interpersonal communication is gradually deteriorating. Professor Sung observed that younger generations are generally weaker at soft skills like social etiquette, presentation, etc. and reminded young people to develop our communication skillsets as these are essential for our lives, no matter for a romantic partner or a job.

Afterall, Professor Sung recommends us, to spare some time to jump out of the technology trap, and absorb views from people of all walks of life, to have a more objective judgement over issues, and a more meaningful face-to- face conversation with people. we need to strengthen the education on history. Despite our political views, we need in-depth study about our culture history to understand more about our own culture. Sadly though, under the current system, Modern Chinese history has became only electives, and many students chose to avoid due to the grades.

Small Actions, Different World Prof Sung has many memorable moments as vice chancellor of Chinese University Hong Kong, recalling the one that he is most satisfied - Setting up ICARE Programme.

“Let’s look around and be more romantic.” - Professor Joseph Sung The above-mentioned concerns on students’ over-emphasis on academic results and money has rooted in Professor Sung’s mind, and he deeply believes that University life should be more all-round and romantic (He meant the romance of appreciating the beauty of the world, yet students intentionally misinterpret as romantic relationship). Therefore he proposed the program to create an atmosphere for students to appreciate the non-materialistic part of the world, like art, motivated to do more work on environmental protection. Thus, one of the upcoming action point of ECC is to work with calligraphy and literature, and promoted the idea to more people, where ICARE, is the Acronym of RTHK to produce a 10-episode series on “Environment and Health” to deliver the message that our environment connects I - Integrity and Moral Development closely to our body, i.e. If environment is good, say the water, and air quality is good, our health will be much benefited. When a customer said no to plastic, he/she would receive a stamp. After collecting six stamps, he/she could redeem a set of reusable cutlery or a drink. Professor Sung was skeptical with the effectiveness at first, but with the positive response in the first phase, the second phase was re-run in June this year with For the Environment, For Ourselves nearly 700 eateries participating. It turned out that the restaurants have reduced a total of about 2,400,000 sets of disposable Professor Sung was nominated as the Chairman of ECC, and it all started from a misheard phone call.
