President’s Notes Director’s Corner th President’s Report-AGM - 27 August 2017 Recent Club Photographs/Results

The 2016-17 year for SPBC is coming to a close and I would like to thank Bridge News around the world you all for contributing to a very successful year. Membership has Tournament Committee reached 519, which is an all time high, and is about 10% higher than at the beginning of the club year. Table money has increased which shows Partnership Coordinator that more bridge is being played. Profit for the year has exceeded Bridge Getaway $50000.00 which puts us in a good position for the Club to establish and move to a new venue in the years ahead. Notices Future Events I would particularly like to thank all the members of the Management Committee for the smooth running of the club activities. It makes life South Perth/ BAWA Results easy for the President when MC members are focused on the interests of the Club.

Also, I’d like to recognize the contribution of non-MC members who carry out essential functions to keep the Club going. They are too numerous to mention individually but I’d like to particularly thank Wendy Kappelle (Masterpoint Secretary) and Martin Cleeve (Recorder) who both retired from their positions during the year after numerous years of dedication. The new Secretary is Garth Scotford and the new Recorder is Bob Prince and I am sure you will support them both in carrying out these roles. I would also like to recognize the contribution of Jenny Simpson who continues to work tirelessly for the Club after retiring as House Manager.

As reported at last Year’s AGM, the planned relocation of club premises to the old Manning Library site was cancelled by the City of South Perth, as they concluded that the timing and the proposed venue were not suitable for immediate relocation. Instead, however, the City of South Perth has initiated plans to redevelop and expand the George Burnett Leisure Centre in Manning Road and has included SPBC as a stakeholder in this process. A budget has been allocated in the 2017/18 financial year by the City to define the costs and needs of this development. SPBC will be included in this process. If the development proceeds on a timeline consistent with the City of South Perth predictions, weFuture may Eventshave new premises towards the latter end of 2020. Bridge World Championships

Another issue for the club that I wish to bring to your attention, is the impact Deof the Associated Incorporation Act 2015, which came into effect on 1st July 2016. Changes in this Act will mainly affect us in two areas. Firstly, there are mandatory changes required to the financial reporting of clubs and associations and the details of these requirements will be given in the Treasurer’s Report. Secondly, our Constitution will require updating to meet the requirements of the new Act. The Management Committee has already commissioned a sub-committee to rewrite our Constitution and following agreement of their findings by the next Management Committee, a revised Constitution will be submitted to all members for pg. 1

the Club for approval at the 2018, AGM. This timing is consistent with the requirements of the Act which requires that the Club Constitutions should conform to the Act by July 2019.

Thanks once again for your support during the year and I am sure the Club will have a bright and prosperous future in the hands of the new Committee.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Annual General Meeting of South Perth Bridge Club was held on Sunday 27th August 2017. The Meeting was well attended and the following members either remained on the Management Committee or were elected on to the Management Committee for 2017/18 Club year. A full report on the AGM will be on the Club website. Below is the New Management Committee:

President: Jan Howell Vice-President: Darrell Williams Secretary: Jeannie Ravn Treasurer: Garth Scotford Asst. Treasurer: Jeanne Hey House Manager: Wilma Coloper There were five nominations for four Committee places. Members voted by ballot at the meeting, and, as a result Laurie Money, Tony McKinnon, Jennifer Goyder and Wendy Harman were appointed.

JAN HOWELL’S REPORT FOR E/NEWS, AS INCOMING PRESIDENT – AUGUST 2017

I would like to express my thanks to the previous committee for their successes over the last year. Not only has the membership increased, but also table attendances have increased, and importantly the cash savings have increased. You might argue that we are a not for profit organisation and this is true, but we have been advised by the City of South Perth that we will be expected to contribute to the cost of new premises and we hope to be able to ensure we achieve premises which will suit our needs for the future.

I have asked Cherry to publish Dave’s President’s Report to the AGM.

I welcome the new management committee and look forward to working together to achieve a happy and successful club.

------DIRECTOR’S CORNER

CLAIMS

One of my bugbears is players making a claim about half way through the play of the hand, showing their hand without any statement as to the line of play and expecting me to accede to the claim by working out for myself how the play would proceed. It is discourteous and intimidating to expect another player to work out the successful line pg. 2

of play in order to concede, and many inexperienced players will concede to avoid embarrassment. It is more courteous to players, if a claimant delays making a claim until it is obvious to all that the cards in dummy or declarer’s hand are all winners

Players should be mindful of the law which states:

A claim should be accompanied at once by a clear statement of the line of play or defence through which the claimer proposes to win the tricks claimed, including the order in which the cards will be played. The player making the claim or concession faces his hand.

This last sentence is a new addition to the law. Under the old laws, play ceased when a claim was made and if any player doubted the claim, the director must be summoned.

The new laws have a provision for the hand to be played out if any player doubts the claim.

The usual process of calling the director is still available and will be the better option for players who disagree with the claim. However, if the non- conceding side request, and all four players agree, play may continue. The claimant picks up his hand, play continues and the result will stand. There is no further opportunity to seek redress for any outcome via the Director.

BRIDGE NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

For this edition, I was interested to discover a famous Australian Bridge personality. I am certain many of our members will know the name, will have heard of him, and if you ever had the opportunity, played with him or against him as after all he did not pass away that many years ago. In my search, I consistently came across the name of Richard Cummings known to all as Dick. From discovering the following on the Internet, I bring to you this article/eulogy, written by Peter Gill and I felt it would be of interest not only to our older members but to those lucky enough to be coming into this wonderful game of Bridge. Richard (Dick) Cummings

1932-1999

Richard John Cummings died of pulmonary fibrosis. He was 67.

Dick is regarded as the greatest Australian-born bridge player of all time. His ethics and demeanour set the very highest standards and he was a role model and mentor to many of Australia’s finest bridge players. Dick edited WBF News for some years and his daily bridge column has been widely and enthusiastically read for the last twenty years by bridge players ranging from social to the best players.

The foursome of Dick Cummings, Tim Seres, Roelof Smilde and Denis Howard put Australia on the world bridge map with a series of top placings in the World Championships of the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in a Bronze Medal in 1973. Cummings and Seres went on to become one of the world’s top pairs, and were described by Alan Truscott at the1981 as “the world’s most experienced pair”, having added another Bronze Medal in the 1979 Bermuda Bowl after a stirring last round match against Italy to determine whether Australia or Italy met USA in the Final.

Watching the Vu-Graph at the 1980 Olympiad in Valkenburg, my young eyes looked in awe as Dick played a hand much better than the world-class commentators had envisaged. Dick won the Bols Brilliancy Prize for that play.

Unlike many world class players, Dick gave back as much as he got from the game which he loved. During the 1980s he organised the annual Herald Competition, which was at the time the world’s pg. 5

largest bridge event. Dick taught bridge, played bridge, wrote bridge, served bridge and most of all set a shining example of the standard of behaviour expected at the bridge table.

He will be greatly missed by the bridge community.

Peter Gill I understand Peter lives in Sydney which I discovered, from a phone call to our very own Peter Gill.

------TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE – Report from Wendy Harman OPEN - Have played 6 matches - won 4, lost 2. One more match to play against WABC - Currently in first place but other club’s still have a few matches to play as well, so don't expect they will stay first for long. INTERMEDIATE BLUE - Have played all matches - won 4, lost 1, drew 1. Currently third, could finish second if other results go their way. INTERMEDIATE GOLD - Have played all matches - won only 1 this year - currently fourth, but with other clubs to play matches will most likely move down near the bottom.

NOVICE BLUE - Have played 3 matches - won 2, lost l. Currently third, but with 1 more match to play against Swan Districts later this month, and could hopefully finish second and be in the finals. NOVICE GOLD - Have played all 4 matches - won 3, lost 1. Currently first, but other clubs have 1 more match to play, so expect South Perth to finish second and also be in finals.

I will be continuing on as Club Captain until November this year to cover finals with Novice teams. Next year Laurie Money has kindly offered to take over as Club Captain and I am sure he will do a great job.

Thanks to all South Perth players who have played this year and made it easy for me to arrange matches.

The following is a flyer Wendy has asked me to include, and the Club hope that many members will take advantage of this. I was in a team last year and it was great fun but more than that I learnt much from the day

Red Point Event ------Jan Howell placed the following on Pianola and I repeat it here for those of you who are not members of Pianola: Hi Everyone,

I am stepping down from the role of Partnership Coordinator which I have very much enjoyed. I have felt that this service is appreciated by members and there is a high success rate for members seeking a bridge partner.

The Management Committee has appointed Dionne Koblenz to take on this role. Dionne has been providing a partnership service for novice players and is well able to extend her area of responsibility in this way. She may not be known to many members but she will be happy to help you all.

Please contact her on 0403 163 092 or [email protected] if you need help finding a partner for a game.

If you have not been receiving partner request emails, and would like to receive them, please contact Jeannie Ravn, the new Secretary by emailing her at the club [email protected] and she will add your name to the list.

Regards Jan Howell

BRIDGE GETAWAY

A few months ago, a couple of our novice players spied a really good deal for accommodation down south. After a lot of careful planning their ideas came to fruition and 20 players from the Thursday morning novice session took off for 2-3 days in Margaret River, to play bridge and enjoy other activities available in the area.

Most of us set off on Tuesday morning arriving in time to play at the Margaret River club in the afternoon. We had seven full tables which stretched their facilities to the max, but we had a great time. For most, it was a first experience of a Howell movement and travellers! The home players were very welcoming, and treated us to a sumptuous afternoon tea. We hope to be able to return the hospitality some time. Bob Mitchell’s sister was very keen to show us kiddy pics of a very sweet, innocent looking former President!

After bridge, we returned to the motel for drinks by the fire and then dinner. Next morning, we played more bridge in the dining room, finishing about noon. Then we hopped in a bus for wine tasting and other treats. A lot of tasting and purchasing took place at the Woody Nook Winery, followed by a great lunch. We then took off to another winery, (no purchasing here), then a final venue where chocolates, coffee and olive oil were available. More purchasing!! pg. 7

On Thursday morning, twelve hardy players fronted up for more bridge, while others set out for home. With ten of us left, we followed local recommendations and went to Hay Shed Hill for more wine tasting and lunch. All very enjoyable. On the way home, we called in to a cheese factory for more tasting and ice cream. Pity about the waist line!

The stragglers took off for home on Friday morning, very relaxed and enthusiastic about our experiences. A mammoth thankyou goes to Catherine Carr and Kathy Murray who made all this happen. Catherine was in charge of the social side with buses and wineries and Kaye organized the bridge. It was many times worth all the effort they put in to give us all such a memorable time on our inaugural getaway!

REVISION WORKSHOPS –

Lyndall Steed is continuing to offer revision workshops for less experienced players. DAY: First and Third Tuesday of the month commencing in July.

TIME: 10:00am to 12:00 noon

COST: $5:00 for each session

No need to bring a partner …….. It would be fun to bring your lunch and stay for the afternoon session! We look forward to seeing you there.

NOTICES

SUPPER ROOM

The Club has recently installed two additional disposable cup tubes in the Playing Room and in the Supper Room, in response to a suggestion that we should make an effort to reduce non-recyclable waste. By placing your empty plastic cups (not the cup holders) in one of these tubes, it will assist us in using the number of plastic bags used, conserve space in the rubbish bins and ultimately the rubbish tip.

PLEASE HELP IN MAKING THIS POSSIBLE

SEEKING MENTORING ADVICE?? Cassie Morin has placed the following Notice on the Notice in the Club Rooms and in addition has asked me to include it in ENews. FOR PLAYERS AT: TUESDAY AFTERNOON NOVICE SESSION THURSDAY MORNING NOVICE SESSION SATURDAY MORNING SESSION OR: ANY OTHER PLAYER

We recognise that you may wish to ask an Experience Player for advice on Bidding or Play of a particular hand, after the session you have just played or even at other times.

The members listed below have indicated that they are willing to assist if requested. YOU ARE WELCOME TO APPROACH ANYONE ON THIS LIST FOR ADVICE …………………. EITHER AT THE CLUB OR BY PHONE:

MARTIN CLEEVE CASSIE MORIN ELIZABETH McNEILL DAVE MUNRO JEANNE HEY JACKIN CLARE WENDY HARMAN JAN HOWELL

Cassie Morin - Chair of Education Sub Committee ======FACEBOOK One of our members sent me the following and for those of you who are not Members of Facebook, and even for those of you who are avid members, I am certain, you will have a smile……… ‘For people of a certain age like me, who do not, and cannot, comprehend why Facebook exists, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles.

Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dog, of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them the ‘thumbs up’ and tell them I like them.

And it works….. just like Facebook. I already have four people following me – Two police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist! …………………………………………….. pg. 9

EDITORS NOTES

Hi Everyone, This time as I sit to report on South Perth Bridge Club news, it is a rather shortened version. I am going on holiday for five weeks commencing on the 14th September. I am travelling to the UK and to the Caribbean to visit friends and family , some of whom I have not seen, since leaving Zimbabwe, when families scattered worldwide.

I have been in touch with Jan, who is also going away in September, and it was decided that this edition of

ENews will span just two months, instead of the usual three. It will enable me to have ENews ready for print before I leave. So, therefore, the next edition will span four months to 31st December 2017, before we go into yet another New Year. My goodness we only seem to have just begun this one!

My plans for including a short account of a South Perth personality, and Holiday Memories will have to be curtailed for this edition. But I will be looking to include these two articles in the December edition.

Thank you for your support. I would truly appreciate any topics or news you feel would be of interest to the members. You are always able to contact me by email or by phone. I thank those of you who have already done so, and the feedback makes my job so enjoyable and so worthwhile. Also, a big thank you to Garth, who sends me photos and gathers news of members and outside results. It is all greatly appreciated.
