MISS TILLY TIDY is just the companion you need to help you keep your bits and pieces tidy while you work. She can be used as or crochet companion, desk tidy or kitchen helper. She has two deep pockets and three small. Just the right sizes to hold knitting needles, crochet hooks, small , cottons and threads, stitch holders and markers, tape measures, pens and pencils. the list is endless. Her chić hairstyle is also a pincushion to hold your pins and sewing needles safely.

Miss Tilly Tidy stands at 14 inches/36cms from base to the top of her bun.

Tilly is knitted flat on two straight knitting needles and assembled. I have included a list of notions you will need on the pattern. I would recommend Aran/Worsted Weight , please use the needle sizes quoted on the pattern, these are smaller than the ball band advises but this is to create a dense which will stop the finished Tilly being stretched out of shape and her stuffing peeping through. If you wish to use double knit/Lightweight Worsted yarn please use 2.5mm/2US and 3mm/3US needle sizes. Increases are knit into the front and back of the same stitch (KFB).

I have also included a very detailed making up guide, which is full of colour photos and some tips to help you create a very special companion.

Have fun filling her pockets with your essential bits and pieces. Or perhaps you have a special friend or relative who would love to own a Miss Tilly Tidy.

MISS TILLY TIDY MAKING UP GUIDE – Body

Spread out the apron, wrong side facing. Fold at the stocking stitch rows, making sure that the outside edges are together, pin in place. Use lots of pins to make sure it doesn’t move around.

Slipstitch the side edges together. Slipstitch the top part of the large pocket to the back of the apron and backstitch to the bottom of the pocket between the stitch markers, repeat from the second side. Backstitch the smaller pockets using the stitch markers to help.

With right sides together gather the remaining stitches at neck edge and sew along the back seam until approximately 1 inch/2.5cm past the top of the apron. Taking care not to trap the apron in the seam.

MISS TILLY TIDY MAKING UP GUIDE – Body – cont’d

From the base, weave a loose whipstitch through the cast on stitches and gather up tightly. Sew along the base seam and along the back seam, leaving approximately 4 inch/10cm stuffing gap.

Fold the reverse stocking stitch welt to the right side and slipstitch together at the colour change stitches.

Turn to the right side and make sure that all seams are nice and straight.

Using either the card disc or coaster, push into the base, making sure it sits below the welt and is nice and flat.

MISS TILLY TIDY MAKING UP GUIDE – Body – cont’d

Stretch the pop sock over a wide container and weigh out 150grams of plastic pellets into it. Tie the sock securely, leaving a little “wiggle” room for the pellets as they need to completely cover the base of the body.

Push the pellet sack into the base of the doll, making sure that they spread to fit the base completely. Stuff the body, it must be stuffed firmly, pack it in and shape the body as you go, don’t lose the waist shaping. Make sure the top is really firmly stuffed and pat flat. Close the stuffing gap.

Head

Fold right sides together. Whipstitch through the cast on stitches. Gather tightly and sew down the back seam. From the top edge gather the remaining stitches and sew down the back seam. Leave a gap for stuffing. It’s a good idea to leave a tail at the bottom gather, easier to see which way up the head is. Stuff the head. Using a large needle push a hole through the fabric and stuffing at the eye marker position. Push the stem through the stuffing and firmly secure the washer.

TIP: A lot of customers have asked me how to indent eyes. This is a trick I’ve learnt. Split the ply of the yarn in half. Thread a long needle and take it from the side of the eye and out to the stuffing gap, leaving a long tail at the front. Unthread the needle and rethread with the tail at the front. Make a stitch across the eye and take the needle out through the stuffing gap. Pull both tails at the stuffing gap gently until the eye indents as you would like it. Tie the tails securely. Now wiggle the stitch to the top and push it behind the eye.

Mouth

From the front take the loaded needle through the stuffing gap. Leaving a tail at the front and back. Unthread and rethread the needle with the front tail and make a stitch across, take the needle out through the stuffing gap.

Gently pull both tails until the mouth indents slightly, tie the ends securely. Sew another stitch across the mouth, take the thread through the stuffing gap and tie off.

MISS TILLY TIDY MAKING UP GUIDE – Head – cont’d

Whipstitch along the straight edge and gather slightly until the ear curves. Using the ear mark on the head as a guide, pin in place.

Sew along the front edge and then all around the ear as shown. Do not sew it flat to the head, there needs to be a little “lift” at the back and top to be able to tuck the hair around. Hair

With right sides together, gather the remaining stitches tightly and sew down the back seam. Turn to the right side and stuff the top, above the 2 rows of stocking stitch. Tie around the stocking stitch rows loosely to hold the bun in place, or you could use an elastic band. Starting at the back pin the wig with the back seams matching, pull it down quite low. Pin the front in place, you may need to stretch it a little but that’s fine.

MISS TILLY TIDY MAKING UP GUIDE – Hair – cont’d

Pull and pin the wig around the ears, make sure you use plenty of pins. Sew the wig in place; sew the row above the cast on edge, using backstitch. Push the bun into the head and sew around the garter stitch rows above and below the stocking stitch rows. This will help to stop the head wobbling.

Fringe/Bangs

Wrap the yarn around a suitable item 25 to 30 times. Cut through one edge. Using a crochet hook latch the strands of yarn through the cast on edge from ear to ear. Trim to the desired length.

MISS TILLY TIDY MAKING UP GUIDE - Attaching the head

Place the head on the body, making sure that the back seams line up. Using thin knitting needles secure the head to the body securely. Because of the hairstyle the head is quite heavy and it’s important to push the head into the body as you sew around, this will create a wide circumference. You may need to sew around this seam several times to make sure it’s nice and secure.

Arms

With right sides together, gather the remaining stitches at the hand edge and sew as far as the wrist. Sew from the elbow to the cast on edge. Turn to the right side and sew across the cast on edge, taking the needle to the curve at the top of the arm. Stuff the hand first. Stuff the upper arm to the elbow, taking care not to overstuff, especially at the cast on edge. Stuff the lower arm from elbow to wrist, mind the elbow, don’t lose the shape. Close the stuffing gap.

MISS TILLY TIDY MAKING UP GUIDE – Attaching the arms.

Using the knitting needles, pin the arms to the body. They should be tucked up into her neck, in line with her ears. Sew from the curve at the top of her arms and along the cast on edge.

Flip the arm back and sew along the cast on edge.

Add a ribbon to her hair and blush to her cheeks and she’s ready to hold your craft; office; baking or any supplies you may need her to hold.
