Joining Credit Union is easy and is open to everyone who is within the "common bond", in this case, living in the area. To become a full member you must complete an application form, and pay £1 to join. The amount you save is up to you but it must be regular in order to avail of the benefits which are many including borrowing at low cost credit, financial advice, insurance protection on savings and loans at no cost (check with your own credit union for details of cover provided) plus help to keep your level of debt under control. The advantages are tremendous: when you borrow from a credit union you do so as a member-owner and not as someone paying for goods or a service. There is no hidden cost and Marian McCormack and Jane Lehane by law a credit union cannot charge any more than 1% per month on the unpaid balance of a loan. In the corresponding issue last year I wrote an article regarding our participation at the All Ireland Championships and I was delighted to report about our outstanding success - 10 athletes competed and won 11 medals between them. This year the Juvenile Championships were held at the Mardyke in Cork and the Juniors at the Antrim Forum and our athletes exceeded even our wildest expectations. A total of twenty-eight athletes represented the club and between them they won the staggering total of 43 medals. This level of success is fantastic for a club which only had a handful of juvenile members up to two or three years ago, but as I have said in previous issues the club has been growing steadily and maintaining a success level which makes us the envy of other clubs. This success is due to the dedication of the club coaches and officers and to the effort put in by the athletes in their training. Unfortunately other athletes who represented Knocklyon at the first week- end of the Community Games were unable to compete on the second week-end due to a clash of fixtures with the N.A.C.A.I. Championships. At the All Ireland Community Games in Mosney in early September, two of our athletes - Aine Hunt and Eoin Cummins reached the finals in their respective events amid severe competition from the other 31 counties and thus kept the flag flying for Knocklyon and Dublin. Derek Saville was unfortunately knocked out on a technicality. A sincere word of thanks to Bros. Pearse Athletic Club who obliged in training the athletes. The above achievements are an indication of how important it is to Knocklyon Community to have Cherryfield running track available for parish athletics.

We would encourage as many parents as possible to attend this meeting and to get involved in assisting with the organisation and administration of particular events next year. There is a role for everyone to play - you do not need to have an expertise at a particular sport to be of help.
