Fৈ৅ৃ ৊া঻ Pষ৉৊৅ৈ’৉ D঻৉ু Conversations On Culture: How Does Music Affect Us? (Part 2)

Dear Friends, I want to move along into powers that are the highest within us, the intellect and the will, and how they are impacted by music. On the flipside of that, if we want to use our highest faculties, BOTH our intellect and our will, our musical selections will be impacted—positively. Why do I say positively? Because when we are ordering our actions according to the truth of who we are (objectively speaking), we are being led to virtue. We can adjust our taste in music to fit this, as opposed to being ruled by our passions. Now, if we remember, those powers we have that separate us from the other animals is part of our rational nature are the intellect and the will. This is what separates us from the beasts. Intellect is the faculty by which we apprehend the truth, judge it and reason about it. Our will on the other hand is the spiritual appetite. Our will inclines us to that which we apprehend as good for us. The will is where we make choices. In comparison with all other material beings, these powers are uniquely human, excellent and dignified. If we consider music that speaks to the will, it does not produce an emotional reaction, per se, but it appeals to our pursuit of the good or love—properly speaking. Certain forms of regional folk music and certain kinds of classical music appeal to the will. Most Spanish-speaking countries enjoy a very rich folkloric musical heritage. For example, Mexico has an extremely rich variety of musical style that crosses its different regions (Norteño, Mariachi, Duranguense Bands, Son istemeño, etc.). Another such example would be Irish and Scottish music that is known for its jigs, reels, and ballads. A separate topic dealing with more modern music would address “folk music of the U.S.”, much of which is characterized by “Folk Rock”— something different than what we are talking about here, i.e., music that appeals to the will. Now, if we move to the intellect, there is music that appeals to that as well. Intellectual pleasure in knowing and hearing the thing. We definitely can speak to Classical Music, Polyphonic Music and Gregorian Chant. Simply take a consideration of the type of dance that is associated with a classical pieces of music, ballet, a waltz, courtly dance. There are countless benefits to classical music. Gregorian chant is the highest. The human voice is the highest. All other instruments try to mimic the human voice. For instance, the organ is a mimic of the human voice, which is why organ music is pretty high up on the list as well. But Gregorian chant is the highest because it moves the mind and the heart to have union with God. It doesn’t move the emotion and appetites, but cultivates contemplation. This type of music deserves an installment of its own. So, I will leave it there, for now. For those who are a little intimidated by learning to love Classical music or Gregorian Chant, don’t be. It may always be a bit mysterious. It is good for us, however, to be exposed to something that is challenging and unfamiliar, it has a bit of adventure to it. It takes a little bit of time, some courage, and openness to see yourself enjoying it on its own merit and ultimately loving it. G.K. Chesterton describes romance as needing that mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar. One surefire way to learn to love it is to listen to a live performance of a well-known composer, e.g., Bach or Mozart or Beethoven. The first one I ever went to was Beethoven’s Pastoral symphony, at the age of 24. I love it to this day. Sadly, the pandemic has put a number on this reality, but little by little we are seeing the prospects of a return to the live performing arts. We can conclude today with a quote from Fr. Basil Cole. He writes, “Taking many hints from St. Thomas, listening to music is more than simply sense pleasure and it needs to be integrated as part of life. Its potential connection for good or bad with so many parts of life becomes clearer when seen in light of the contemporary experience of too much music linked with a major philosophy of life that is antithetical to the life of virtue. The problem with the contemporary scene may be characterized not so much by bad taste, as by too many consumers enjoying lovely melodies and rhythms while accepting the anti-gospel way of life concomitantly promoted attractively by the sounds of beauty flowing from the now wealthy high priests of the contemporary musical world, rock stars.” (Music and Spirituality) Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Fourth Sunday of Lent Page 3 W঻ূহ৅ৃ঻ ৊৅ Oোৈ Lষ঺৏ ৅় P঻ষহ঻! We invite you to join our parish family! FAREWELL AND GOD BLESS TO SISTER VIRGO! In thanksgiving to God for the 9 years of religious presence and apostolic ministry of Sister Maria Virgo Offerens at Our Lady of Peace Church and Shrine, we would like to share with the parish community that she has received a new assignment and will be making her way to our SSVM community living and serving in Vanimo, Papua New Guinea in the upcoming months.

She has delighted us with her musical talents and graciously served in the formation of the children and youth at our parish, and so we ask for your prayers as she undertakes this new missionary adventure for the love of God and the good of many souls.
