Enjoy “Great Conversations” with the College of Arts & Sciences

Whether you’re more interested in politics, religion or the weather, those and other hot topics will be open for discussion at this year’s “Great Conversations” dinner, presented by the faculty of the College of Arts & Sciences on Thursday, April 18, at the Memphis Botanic Garden. There you’ll join friends and alumni of the University at tables of eight or 10 to discuss topical subjects, with the discussions led by professors who have expertise in the topic at each table.

Guests choose in advance, when registering, which topic they want to spend the evening discussing. The event will begin with a hospitality reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $65 per person and the attire for the evening is business casual. Call 678-1332 to make a reservation. The deadline for reservations is April 11.

Olympic medalist Shawn Johnson will speak at U of M on April 8

Shawn Johnson, who won gold and silver medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, will speak at the on Monday, April 8. Her presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre; following her talk, she will take questions from the audience and she will visit with members of the audience for photos and autographs. Her talk is free and open to the public.

Johnson won her first Senior National Championship in August 2007. She then became World AA Champion. In both competitions, she achieved the largest point differentiation against some of the world’s best gymnasts. In June 2008 she again was named National Champion and was named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team. In the Beijing games, she earned an individual gold medal in the balance beam competition and three silver medals, for individual all-around, floor exercises and team categories.

CEHHS will honor exceptional alumni and faculty at Hall of Fame

The University of Memphis College of Education, Health and Human Sciences (CEHHS) Alumni Chapter will hold its second annual Hall of Fame Reception and Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in the Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway Hall of Fame, 570 Normal St. The event will honor exceptional alumni and faculty from the University’s 100-plus year history. Celebrate the planet at U of M’s Earth Day event on April 18 University of Memphis students, faculty, staff and the Memphis community are invited to celebrate the planet at the University of Memphis Earth Day event Thursday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festivities will take place at the TIGUrS Urban Garden, which is located adjacent to the .

The rain location for the “zero waste” event will be the Michael D. Rose Theatre lobby. Those attending the Earth Day celebration will have the chance to browse information tables featuring sustainability initiatives from on-and off-campus organizations. They

also can get an “up close and personal” view of the TIGUrS Garden and participate in the planting of summer crops.

There will be Zumba demonstrations, a farmer’s market, live music from local artists and prize giveaways, including a bicycle and recycling bins. A butterfly release will take place at noon; anyone interested may release a butterfly. Volunteers needed for a study at the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders is conducting a study on the human hearing system. The study explores a diagnostic test called otoacoustic emissions. This test has helped to revolutionize our understanding of how the human ear processes acoustic information. It is a test specific to the inner ear, or cochlea, considered the human organ of hearing. Investigators are looking for young adults 20 to 30 years old with normal hearing. Research participation supports the goals of the University and is the foundation for the development of diagnostic testing in many fields of study. Submit 2013 "Great Colleges to Work For" program surveys due April 15 The University of Memphis is participating in The Chronicle's "Great Colleges to Work For" program, a study designed to gather benchmarking data within higher education and to recognize institutions that have built great workplaces. MemphisCRESH now accepting applications for summer program High school students interested in participating in the summer MemphisCRESH program (College Research Experience for Students in High School) should submit applications now. Applications for the 2013 program will continue to be accepted until all positions are filled. MemphisCRESH provides the opportunity for rising high school juniors and seniors to acquire first-hand experience of life as a scientist beyond a lecture hall setting. Memphis Healthy U honored by Memphis Business Journal On March 28, the Memphis Business Journal recognized and rewarded companies and organizations that worked to create a healthy workplace through a commitment to wellness and health programs at the third annual Mid-South’s Healthiest Employers breakfast. The U of M's Memphis Healthy U initiative was a finalist in 500+ employees category. Since its inception in 2011, Memphis Healthy U has encouraged faculty, staff and students to pledge to move more, eat healthier and become tobacco free. Free events such as weekly nutrition seminars, Zumba classes, a Desk to 5k training program, healthier food options offered through Tiger Dining, as well as no-cost BMI and blood pressure checks have helped the campus community in living a healthier lifestyle.
