TRIATHLON STEWARDS On Sunday 22nd April, WASC starts its 2012 triathlon season with the event being held at Duston. During the past 2 years, WASC volunteers have helped raise £1,900 for our swimmers by giving up a little of their time to steward local triathlon events, supporting our sponsor Just Racing UK.

The stewarding role involves directing & encouraging the competitors. All those who have volunteered in the past have thoroughly enjoyed the whole event.

During 2012, WASC have been asked to provide support to 5 events at Duston (22nd April); Grendon (13th May); Corby (10th June); Grendon (24th June); and Roade (30th September).

If you would like to get some fresh air, see top class competitors perform and raise money for our swimmers, please contact Craig Brown, or use the contact page on the web site to get in touch.

USE IT OR LOOSE IT!!! Since WASC was established more than 40 years ago, water time has always been a precious commodity due to availability and cost, and the committee are constantly being ask for more water time. During the 1970’s & 1980’s a large portion of our training was held during the mornings, with five sessions a week, each attracting 25 or more swimmers.

Recently numbers have dwindled so badly that we often have only 3 swimmers for the 3 lanes we have available. With nearly 200 members, why is the water left empty? Is it the time of training, the length of the session, school start times, parent working hours, or something else? Your reasons, suggestions and comments would be welcomed – please use the website contact page to tell us what you think.

Morning training allows swimmers to increase their water time by 30% to 150%, depending on their squad, and those that do attend find it is the perfect way to get mind & body into gear at the start the day.

Usage of this valuable resource will be monitored, but it could soon be “USE IT OR LOOSE IT.” WASC Committee

BEST FOOT FORWARD Due to popular demand, WASC will be holding a Barn Dance at the Tithe Barn in Wellingborough on Friday 27th April. There will be a live band and caller, as well as a light supper, to boost the energy levels for dancing. There will be no bar, but you are welcome to bring your own drinks and nibbles.

Ticket prices are £5.00 per child and £7.50 per adult, with 50p extra for the chicken meal. During the evening we will be holding a raffle to raise funds to cover the travelling costs for our swimmers who will be working at the Olympic Games and I would ask you all to dip into your pockets and buy at least one ticket with each entrance ticket.

Last year’s event was enjoyed by all who attended, so be quick to avoid disappointment. Craig Brown

WASC OLYMPIC TEAM NEWS After the ridiculously early start of 5:30 on saturday morning we made our way into London. When we got there, the outside of the building was just as amazing as it was the first time we went. Walking past some of the competitors for the day we felt extremely privileged to be taking part in such a prestigious event.

After checking in we were led to our special corridor near the Diving area, and they ran through the day’s procedures with us. There were 2 other kit-carrying teams (A + B), we were team C and so we were the last to show our professionalism, although I like to think that the best were saved until last.

As the warm up drew to a close we all found it hard to control our excitement; however we were a team member short as Abbie Williams had been picked from our team to collect the swimmers accreditations and lead them out onto poolside! It finally got to our first heat and all went swimmingly as we marched on and off poolside to collect and drop off kit, however this was for a 400m event, the real challenge came when it got the 100m events as they were a little bit quicker and we did not want to be beaten back by the swimmers. But John did a great job of altering the system ʻbackstageʼ to help make things easier for both us and the swimmers.

During our time on poolside we managed to catch a glimpse of some of the more well known swimmers, such as Hannah Miley and Ellie Simmonds who both went on to reach the finals and John helped get her kit out of the box after her swim. All in all it was a great day and we cannot wait until the real thing! Helena, Katie, Lauren, Abbie

OLYMPIC YOUNG GAMES MAKERS GREAT CAKE BAKE SALE! Held on Monday 26 March the sale raised £185 towards the anticipated £900 needed for our young volunteers' travel expenses to the London 2012 Olympic Games. With cakes like that, who could resist! Thanks to everyone who supported them. If you enjoyed their produce and would like to taste some more – let them know and maybe they will do it all again.

ASA AWARDS Unfortunately the ASA have put up prices for awards and postage. We will be putting the price of flashes up from Monday 2nd April. This we hope will enable us to keep the scheme self funding and make it easier for everyone who likes to pay by cash.

CLUB 50m CHAMPIONSHIPS Entry forms will be out soon – keep an eye on the website and notice board.

All trophies for the 50m Championships must be returned to the Club Room by the same date as the closing date for entries. Please ensure all trophies are engraved, clean and returned in good time.

Please note that all Club Championships will be run strictly to the WASC Club Championship rules. If you enter an event for which you do not qualify you will forfeit your entry fee and will not be able to take part in the event. Time trials at Championships are not permitted. All entry times must be achieved before the entry cut-off date.

If you have not had the chance to swim an event during the 12 months prior to competition you can ask your Coach to do a time trial for you but please allow plenty of time between your request and the cut-off date for entries. Time trials cannot always be included in the schedule without having an adverse effect on other swimmers’ training.

It is the responsibility of every swimmer to ensure all their times are up to date i.e. achieved within the last 12 months.
