Fifth Sunday of Easter

From the Pastor’s Desk

“Remain in Me!”

“Today’s Gospel, John 15:1-8, offers us a compelling metaphor for what it means to abide in the risen Christ and let God’s good work be done through us.

Imagine, if you can, a farmer who carefully tends his grape vines from day to day and year to year in order to harvest their fruit one beautiful fall day. Farming is risky business even today, and much more so in the ancient world. We know that ancient were build with a fence, often made of stones, and topped with brambles, to keep animals from helping themselves to the tender fruit. In addition, these vineyards often had a wine press and a tower when someone could keep watch over the harvest and keep it safe from two- legged thieves. Even so, other disasters, like storms or drought or even poor rootstock, could dash one’s hope of a good .

In this section of the Gospel of John, Jesus is presented as giving an extended farewell talk to his disciples after he shared a last meal with them and before he is arrested in a across the Kidron Valley from the Jerusalem Temple. He has already told his disciples that he is going to leave them, but they should not be troubled or afraid, because the Father will send the Holy Spirit to be their advocate—as in a court of law—in times of trouble. The Johnannine Jesus uses the metaphor of a to tell them that they must remain in his love and act as his disciples: God the Faith is the vine grower, Jesus is the vine that was grown from God’s specially chosen rootstock, and we are the branches.

The Johnannine Jesus expands the metaphor by talking about how a good vine grower needs to cut off the unproductive branches and prune the good branches to make them produce even more. The central message of the metaphor: we need to remain with the vine if we want to bear fruit as disciples of Jesus.”

Amen! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Fr. Noel P. Tria
