During her studies, she won several national and international vocal competitions. In 2006, while still a student, she also made her operatic début as Mimì, in La Bohème, at the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca. Anita was a member of Wiener Staatsopera ensemble, from 2009 to 2014. During this period, she performed Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), 8 Despina (Così fan tutte), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Mimì and Musetta (La Bohème), Marzelline (Fidelio), Micaëla (Carmen) and Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro). These early successes led to her much-acclaimed debut at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, as Mimì, in La Boheme, in 2012. Career highlights include her house debuts as Mimì (La Bohème), at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera and Opéra de Paris; Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) at the Metropolitan Opera; Violetta (La Traviata) at the Gran Teatre del Liceu; Mimì (La Bohème) at the Wiener Staatsoper and Teatro Real Madrid; Liù (Turandot) at the Metropolitan Opera and Wiener Staatsoper Opera and Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) at the Royal Opera House and Metropolitan Opera. This season, Anita returns to the Wiener Staatsopera for Micaëla (Carmen), before reprising the role once again for her eagerly-awaited house debut at the San Francisco Opera. She will also perform as Violetta in both Michael Mayer’s new production of La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera and at the Toulouse Opera. Other highlights include Amelia Grimaldi (Simon Boccanegra), for her return to the Opéra de Paris and performances of Bruckner’s Mass in F Minor, with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. 9 CRISTIAN MANDEAL conductor Cristian Mandeal studied piano, composition and conducting at the Music Academy in Bucharest. In August 2012, he conducted the Romanian National Youth Orchestra at the Young Euro Classic Festival in Berlin. Cristian Mandeal has recorded for Electrecord, MBG Classics (Arte Nova) and Claves. In his discography, an outstanding achievement are the integral cycles of the Bruckner symphonies, of the Brahms symphonic and vocal/symphonic works, in 9 CDs, commemorating the centenary of the composer’s death, and, especially, the complete symphonic works of George Enescu, in 7 CDs. Cristian Mandeal conducted the world premieres of over 50 symphonic and opera works. He conducts the entire concert repertoire, from Vivaldi to contemporary music, with a propensity for the music of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. 12 ROMANIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA The youngest symphonic orchestra in Romania was founded in the summer of 2008, at the initiative of Marin Cazacu, Artistic Director and cellist, with the support of the Romanian Ministry of Culture. The Romanian Youth Orchestra reunites the most gifted young musicians of Romania (ages 18 to 2v8). Over the years, it has enjoyed a tremendous success, not only on a national, but also on an international level, receiving standing ovations for its performances. Ever since 2011, the Orchestra has been a constant presence on the stage of the biennial George Enescu International Festival, in Bucharest, and was highly appreciated for its guest appearances in the most prestigious musical venues of Berlin (2012, 2014, 2018); Rome (2013, 2013); Vienna (2015, 2018); Istanbul (2015, 2017); Aix-en-Provence (2015); Brussels (2016); Paris (2016); Lyon (2017); Geneva (2017); Salzburg (2017); Linz (2017). Ever since the beginning, the technical and artistic training has been ensured by maestro Cristian Mandeal. His artistic vision and dedication have transformed every concert into a memorable 13 event and the orchestra into one of the most successful musical projects in Romania. The Orchestra has also collaborated with a series of prominent guest conductors, such as: Lawrence Foster, Kristian Jarvi, Cristian Macelaru, Domingo Hindoyan, Horia Andreescu, Christian Badea and Alexandre Myrat. Equally, acclaimed soloists artists such as David Garett, Pinchas Zukermann, Sarah Chang, Amanda Forsyt, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Plamena Mangova, Sergio Tiempo, Barry Douglas, Mihaela Martin, Liviu Prunaru, Aleksey Semenenko, Anita Hartig, Valentina Nafornita, Olga Pasichnik, Bogdan Bacanu, Wave Quartet, have been guests of the Orchestra. In November 2011, the Romanian Youth Orchestra became member of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras (EFNYO). The musical vitality exuded by each of its performances prompted a musical critic to say that the Romanian Youth Orchestra is “the kind of collective artistic organism that epitomizes the quintessence of optimism, of believing in a future. A better one, of course”. 14 15 www.romania2019.eu #RO2019EU 16.

Austin Doub December 11, 2018 Senior Seminar Dr. Yang Abstract: This paper will explore Russian culture beginning in the mid nineteenth-century as the leading group of composers and musicians known as the Moguchaya Kuchka, or The Russian Five, sought to influence Russian culture and develop a pure school of Russian music. Comprised of César Cui, Aleksandr Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimksy-Korsakov, this group of inspired musicians, steeped in Russian society, worked to remove outside cultural influences and create a uniquely Russian sound in their compositions. As their nation became saturated with French and German cultures and other outside musical influences, these musicians composed with the intent of eradicating ideologies outside of Russia. In particular, German music, under the influence of Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann, and Johannes Brahms, reflected the pan-Western-European style and revolutionized the genre of opera.

  • Opera and Poison - a Secret and Enjoyable Approach to Teaching and Learning
Opera and Poison - A Secret and Enjoyable Approach to Teaching and Learning Chemistry João Paulo André Centro/Departamento de Química, Campus de Gualtar, Universidade do Minho, 4710- 057 Braga, Portugal Email: [email protected] Keywords: General Public, Continuing Education, History/Philosophy, Humor/Puzzles/ Games, Multimedia-Based Learning, Drugs/Pharmaceuticals, Forensic Chemistry, Toxicology, Interdisciplinary/Multidisciplinary, Public Understanding/Outreach Abstract The storyline of operas, with historical or fictional characters, often include potions and poisons. This has prompted a study of the chemistry behind some operatic plots. The results were originally presented as a lecture given at the University of Minho in Portugal, within the context of the International Year of Chemistry. The same lecture was subsequently repeated at other Universities as a invited lecture for science students, and in public theaters for wider audiences. The lecture included a multimedia and interactive content that allowed the audience to listen to arias and to watch video clips with selected scenes extracted from operas. The present paper, based on the lecture, not only demonstrates how chemistry and opera can be related, but may also serve as a source of motivation and inspiration for chemistry teachers looking for alternative pedagogical approaches. Moreover, the lecture constitutes a vehicle that transports chemistry knowledge to wider audiences through examples of molecules of everyday life, with particular emphasis on natural products.

  • A Culture of Recording: Christopher Raeburn and the Decca Record Company
A Culture of Recording: Christopher Raeburn and the Decca Record Company Sally Elizabeth Drew A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Music This work was supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council September 2018 1 2 Abstract This thesis examines the working culture of the Decca Record Company, and how group interaction and individual agency have made an impact on the production of music recordings. Founded in London in 1929, Decca built a global reputation as a pioneer of sound recording with access to the world’s leading musicians. With its roots in manufacturing and experimental wartime engineering, the company developed a peerless classical music catalogue that showcased technological innovation alongside artistic accomplishment. This investigation focuses specifically on the contribution of the recording producer at Decca in creating this legacy, as can be illustrated by the career of Christopher Raeburn, the company’s most prolific producer and specialist in opera and vocal repertoire. It is the first study to examine Raeburn’s archive, and is supported with unpublished memoirs, private papers and recorded interviews with colleagues, collaborators and artists. Using these sources, the thesis considers the history and functions of the staff producer within Decca’s wider operational structure in parallel with the personal aspirations of the individual in exerting control, choice and authority on the process and product of recording. Having been recruited to Decca by John Culshaw in 1957, Raeburn’s fifty-year career spanned seminal moments of the company’s artistic and commercial lifecycle: from assisting in exploiting the dramatic potential of stereo technology in Culshaw’s Ring during the 1960s to his serving as audio producer for the 1990 The Three Tenors Concert international phenomenon.

These performances of 4.48 Psychosis mark the culmination of a three- year residency for composer Philip Venables at the Royal Opera House and Guildhall School of Music & Drama. The residency is an attempt both to make the most of the extraordinary artists working at the Royal Opera House around the year and to pull on the structured and supportive learning and creative environment available at the GSMD, and is part of a wider set of training initiatives between the two organizations. It feels completely right for this piece to be presented at the Lyric Hammersmith, a theatre with a long history of staging musical work and also the work of Sarah Kane. Adaptation is often at the heart of opera-making. Throughout history, the opera canon has been made up of familiar stories re-told in new forms. Art has always been derived from other art. The addition of music to a text opens up a new psychological space; music expresses something that lies in the empty spaces between and within words. Philip explores the eternal question of whether music or text takes the lead, showing us that there are still new ways to enliven opera’s old forms and enabling us to hear Sarah Kane’s extraordinary text with fresh ears.
