Book Club In April we discussed the books of Douglas Reeman. Many of them are set in the 1st and 2nd World Wars. We enjoyed them and thought characterisation and plots were good. They assumed a knowledge of naval war ships which caused a few problems. We went on to compare more recent novels and came to the conclusion that Reeman’s books did not insult the intelligence of the reader as some contemporary ones do. This then led on to a wider discussion of violence in novels and other media. This month’s meeting is on Tuesday 28th May, and the book is Small Island by Angela Levy. June’s book is ‘Time after Time’ by Molly Keane. For more details contact Betty. Betty

Bucket List

Two groups of members from the Bucket List Group attended a workshop last month at Mill Rundle Pottery in Drefach Felindre. We spent an enjoyable few hours attempting to throw pots on the wheel under the expert tuition of Simon Day, the potter. Simon and his wife Anne made us very welcome and couldn’t have been more helpful. Many of us purchased some of Simon’s own lovely pots as well as making our own attempts!

5 6 Gardens Group The gardens group visited Norwood gardens near Pencader during a settled spell of weather in April. Three from NCE and two from Cardigan spent a couple of hours wandering around and talking to the owners who are in the process of restoring a somewhat neglected couple of acres. There is still a lot to do but we were impressed with the quality of the work under way. Another few weeks will see a big change as many of the plants will, by then, be in full bloom. Refreshments were also much appreciated as was the small selection of plants on sale. Tony Tony has decided to call it a day leading the Gardens Group and I would like to thank him on your behalf for everything he has done getting this group going. Unfortunately we are now missing a person to lead this group but, kindly, Sue has sent through information of Cardigan’s next Garden visit and has agreed that if any members would like to join them they would be very welcome. The groups have been supporting each other over the last few months anyway. Hopefully this will continue but we do need someone to take the lead for Newcastle Emlyn. Please speak to me (Hazel) if you are able to help with this. In the meantime, here are the details of the next visit. A visit to the Old Cilgwyn Mansion gardens on Wednesday 8th May at 10.30am. It is by special arrangement as the grounds are not usually open to the public. Directions - SA38 9EJ. From NCE Bridge it’s 0.8 of a mile. Drive across the bridge and continue up the steep hill on the A4571. After a short distance you’ll be in a dip . . . the entrance gates are on the right, Japanese Lanterns atop both gate pillars. Proceed along the single track drive and then take the left fork. Park by the ‘Barn’. Please let Sue know if you are able to go. Crafty Crafters Due to several members having other commitments, April’s meeting was a quiet affair Hazel at Barbara’s with just four of us present. We took something of our own to work on and Lunch Group spent the morning drinking tea/coffee and putting the world to rights while we worked.
