Bootlegger: The word first appeared in the 1850s in Maine and of course it refers to smuggling liquor. But this seemed odd to me because Prohibition didn’t start until almost 70 years later. That is, except in Maine, the first dry state, where it became illegal to manufacture or consume liquor in 1851. Because Maine shares a border with Canada, the law was easily flouted. Ordinary folks wanting to smuggle liquor into the country could hide a couple bottles in their pants legs in Canada and walk into the United States. From: Mary Milley’s Roaring Twenties, 1-29-12

(Below) I stopped by Four Daughters Vineyard & Winery – Spring Valley, MN (Southeast MN) last Sunday on my way to the Wisconsin Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Conference to check out their Loon Juice hard cider. They currently have 7 different kinds of hard cider. They sell their Loon Juice in 12 oz., 16 oz. and 5 liter cans. I tried out their $10 hard cider sample which consisted of 6 – 3 oz. servings of a caramel, strawberry, ginger & seasonal cranberry flavored apple hard cider. A Honey Crisp apple and pear cider was also included. They were all very good. Highly recommend trying their Loon Juice. GOOD STUFF! 1-21-18 mlw

(Below) Lyre trellis system on left and Vertical Shoot Positioned (VSP) trellis system on the right at Four Daughters Vineyard and Winery – Spring Valley, MN. The VSP system is common in the Midwest. The Lyre trellis system was designed for vigorous vineyards with upright growing cultivars. It allows for more fruit producing buds per foot of vine row. It was developed by Dr. Alain Corbonneau in the 1980s in the Bordeaux region of France. Four Daughters Winery is growing Brianna, Edelweiss, Marquette and Frontenac on this Lyre trellis system. I think this is the first I have ever seen a Lyre trellis system in the Midwest. 1-21-18 mlw

Coulure: During flowering in the spring, wind and rain as well as chemical deficiencies can keep grapevine from being properly fertilized, causing these flowers to drop off the cluster. This dropping of flowers is called coulure, or shatter. Since each is responsible for a grape, the cluster of grapes that eventually forms is loose and missing grapes. If the improperly fertilized flower stays attached, it produces a puny, seedless grape called a "shot" grape. Although the is reduced, there is a corresponding benefit—loose clusters that allow for increased air circulation are less susceptible to rot in humid conditions.
