We spent the afternoon celebrating in Steiner Hall, one of the best party venues around, eating delicious food and dancing to amazing music. That same afternoon, I returned to TBJ in my favorite attire, jeans and a sweatshirt, for the first ever blessing of the animals. From an adorable boy holding a chicken, a precious girl holding a bunny, a few cats who were kept safe in their crates and an army of happy dogs, this was an event to remember. As we gathered around the fountain singing “Raise and shine” to an orchestra of barks, I made a few play dates for my dog Charlie, and realized that events like this one are what make TBJ so special. I’ve always said that whatever TBJ does, it does well, and this was no exception. This past weekend made me realize just how much my life here in the suburbs has been enriched by my affiliation with TBJ. It is my honor to be the President of the Women’s Association, and my sincere wish that along with the dedicated WA board, we will continue to provide the women of our community with opportunities to be engaged with and enriched by the TBJ family. When I first moved to New Jersey, and my children began their journey in the ECC, the phrase “the days are long, but the years are short” pretty much summed up my early experience. It is my hope to embrace our new ECC families so that they immediately and seamlessly feel part of the TBJ community. Kobi Gewirtz and Charlie Tavel at the TBJ Blessing of the Animals

Jeri Greenberg, PSA, PSNJ, PPSCC • www.jerigreenbergart.com “Telling Stories In My Paintings” After many years as a fashion designer and illustrator, and then working in advertising, I chose to devote myself full time to painting. “Pastels are my tools of expression, and my love of pastels lets me enjoy painting landscapes, still lifes, as well as to continue doing figurative and commissioned paintings. I love making the ordinary stories extraordinary.” “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” Jeri also teaches classes and workshops in both landscape, figures, and still life pastel painting in New Jersey and the surrounding tri-state area. She has been juried into many prestigious art shows such as the International Association of Pastel Societies Shows (IAPS) and the Enduring Brilliance Annual Juried PSA Show in New York City.

25 ! " The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) is an organization that provides emergency shelter and services to families who for whatever reason find themselves homeless. TBJ is one of 25 churches and synagogues in Essex County that provides temporary housing for IHN families. For two weeks each year (one week in April and one week in November), TBJ hosts three to five families in our temple, where we provide sleeping quarters and meals, as well as a place for our guests to relax, socialize, do homework and watch television

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES There are numerous ways to get involved during TBJ’s hosting week: Set up / Break down • Help set up guest accommodations • Help clean up after our guests leave Food Preparation • Prepare and deliver weekday or Shabbat dinners for adults or children • Buy challahs, grape juice and dessert for Shabbat • Bring a fruit or vegetable platter • Bring dessert Spend time with IHN Families • Serve breakfast and get guests ready for pick up • Serve dinner and visit with families • Socialize with guests after dinner • Be an evening captain (the point person for one hosting night) • Be an overnight host (sleep-over)

More details on each of these opportunities can be found on our website at www.tbjshorthills.org/ihn, where Temple members can also sign up to volunteer. If you have any questions please Contact Sharon Portnoi at [email protected]
