2017-18 Big Sky Conference Preseason Poll

OGDEN, Utah (October 13, 2017) – After finishing with a 12-6 record in conference play last season and returning nearly their entire roster, Idaho finds itself at the top of the Big Sky’s Preseason Coaches’ and Media Polls.

The coaches could not vote for their own team in the polls. The media poll was made up of sports information directors as well as media in the Big Sky Conference’s footprint. Media could vote for all 12 teams.

Idaho brings back almost all of their production from their successful 2016-17 season Preseason Polls including their entire starting lineup. Senior Victor Sanders stood out for Idaho last year averaging over 24 points per game in league play. Sanders was recognized by the Big Sky Coaches’ Poll coaches after his stellar junior season earning First Team All-Conference. Sanders isn’t the Idaho...... 117 (10) only returning Vandal that opposing coaches have to worry about. Arkadiy Mkrtychyan Weber State...... 103 (1) contributed to the cause averaging over eight points and four rebounds while starting over Montana...... 101 half of Idaho’s games. The Sherwood brothers are also back for Idaho. Both Nate and Chad Northern Colorado...... 83 (1) were valuable starters for Coach Verlin last season and will to be an integral part of the Montana State...... 83 lineup. North Dakota...... 71 Eastern Washington...... 65 Weber State finished second in the preseason both polls and will look to build off their Portland State...... 55 strong run in the Big Sky Championship. The Wildcats fell just short of locking up their Sacramento State...... 48 second consecutive NCAA berth after losing in overtime to North Dakota in the Big Sky Idaho State...... 25 Championship game. Weber State brings back three of their five starters from a year ago Northern Arizona...... 23 Southern Utah...... 19 in Zach Braxton, Ryan Richardson and Cody John. The three starters combined for 25.9 *First-place votes in parenthesis points and 11.2 rebounds per game. In addition, the Wildcats welcome Utah transfer, Brekkott Chapman to the team. Chapman was part of the Utah squad that made it to the second Media Poll round of the NCAA Tournament in 2016. Head coach, Randy Rahe can become the Big Sky’s Idaho...... 211 (12) all-time leader in career wins if the Wildcats win 19 or more games this season. Weber State...... 195 (3) Montana...... 188 (3) Montana, the third ranked team in the preseason polls, also welcomes back a bevy of Montana State...... 180 talent. The Griz have their top-two leading scorers returning in Ahmaad Rorie and Michael North Dakota...... 146 (1) Oguine. Rorie, a 2016-17 Second Team All-Conference honoree, averaged 17.6 points last year Eastern Washington...... 144 including a 19.4 average in Big Sky play. Oguine also put up better numbers in league play Northern Colorado...... 106 scoring 13 points per game compared to an 11-point average on the year. Sacramento State...... 87 Portland State...... 76 Northern Colorado was perhaps the toughest team for the media and coaches to predict Northern Arizona...... 59 as the Bears were projected fourth in the coaches’ poll with a first-place vote and seventh Idaho State...... 52 in the media poll. Not only does Northern Colorado bring back Third Team All-Conference Southern Utah...... 38 *First-place votes in parenthesis member Jordan Davis, the Bears also welcome Anthony Johnson. Johnson redshirted last season after being All-Conference honorable mention during the 2015-16 season.

No one can deny the talent level of Montana State who finished tied for fourth in the coaches’ poll and fourth in the media poll. The Bobcats have the 2017-18 Preseason MVP in . Hall averaged 23 points for Montana State to help the team achieve their first over .500 record in Big Sky play since the 2009-10 season. Montana State also returns 2016-17 Freshman of the Year Harald Frey for the upcoming year.

Reigning regular season and Big Sky Tournament champions North Dakota finished sixth in the coaches’ poll and fifth in the media poll. Even though the Fighting Hawks graduated Quinton Hooker, Second Team All-Conference member Geno Crandall is back and will look to guide North Dakota to a repeat of the Big Sky title.

Eastern Washington, Portland State and Sacramento State finished in the middle of the pack in both polls. Eastern Washington and Sacramento State welcome back All-Conference performers in Bogdan Blizkyuk and Justin Strings. Portland State will look to first-year head coach, Barret Peery to guide the program to a winning season. Eastern Washington is the other team in the league to have a new head coach, but not an unfamiliar one. Shantay Legans was promoted to head coach from the top assistant coach at Eastern Washington after left.

Idaho State, Northern Arizona and Southern Utah round out both polls. Idaho State was predicted 10th in the coaches’ poll and 11th in the media poll, while Northern Arizona was 11th in the coaches’ poll and 10th in the media poll. Southern was projected to finish 12th in both polls.

Bogdan Bliznyuk Sr. G/F Eastern Washington Lutsk, Ukraine Ahmaad Rorie Jr. G Montana Tacoma, Wash. Geno Crandall Jr. G North Dakota Minneapolis, Minn. Jordan Davis Jr. G Northern Colorado Las Vegas, Nev.

OGDEN, Utah (October 12, 2017) – After leading Montana State to an 11-7 Big Sky record during the 2016-17 season while averaging 23.1 points per game, junior, Tyler Hall was voted Preseason MVP by the Big Sky head coaches.

Hall has been a focal point for the Bobcats ever since he came on earning Freshman of the Year during the 2015-16 season. Hall continued his strong play last season and was one of three players to be voted unanimous First Team All-Big Sky. In addition to averaging 23 points, the guard pulled down over five rebounds a game and shot 42.9 percent from behind-the-arc.

The 2017-18 Preseason All-Conference team was made up of four guards and a guard/forward. Victor Sanders and Bogdan Bliznyuk were voted unanimously for the preseason honor in addition to Hall. Ahmaad Rorie, Geno Crandall and Jordan Davis make up the rest of the team.

Idaho’s Victor Sanders was also a unanimous First Team All-Big Sky selection a year ago. As a junior, he led Idaho to a 12-6 league record while averaging a blistering 24.4 points in-conference. Sanders exploded onto the scene after his freshman year going from averaging 3.8 points per game to nearly 16 points as a sophomore. The senior will be leading an Idaho team that returns all five starters from a year ago.

Bogdan Bliznyuk was a force for Eastern Washington last season averaging 20.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game earning Second Team All-BSC. Bliznyuk will have an even larger role this season after losing 2016-17 Big Sky MVP, to graduation. Since joining the Eagles, Bliznyuk has developed from an important role player as a freshman to now leading the team as a senior.

Ahmaad Rorie had a strong season in his first year at Montana. The Oregon transfer led the team in points (17.6 average) and assists (3.1 average) and earned Second Team All-Big Sky. Rorie led Montana to an 11-7 Big Sky record earning the No. 5 seed in the tournament.

Geno Crandall was an integral part of the 2016-17 North Dakota team that earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. During his sophomore season Crandall combined with Quinton Hooker formed one of the top backcourts in the Big Sky. Crandall averaged 15.5 points and led North Dakota with 136 assists for a 4.4 average. With Hooker graduated, Crandall will take on a bigger workload as the Fighting Hawks prepare to defend their Big Sky title.

Northern Colorado’s Jordan Davis rounds out the Preseason All-Conference team after leading the Big Sky in assists last season averaging 5.6 assists per game. Davis led the Bears in points scoring over 19 points a game. Davis, a starter since joining the team as a freshman in 2015, will look to lead Northern Colorado back to the postseason.
