WSU TO INDUCT STEVE GLEASON IN TO ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME WSU will induct Steve Gleason as the lone member into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame, WSU Director of Athletics Bill Moos announced this summer. In an unprecedented move, Gleason will be the sole member of the 2014 class and will be recognized in an in-game ceremony during a home football game later this fall. “Steve exemplifies all we stand for at Washington State University and will be our exclusive honoree for the 2014 class,” said Moos. “It’s an opportunity to focus on everything he has accomplished, as a student- athlete, as a professional athlete and as a role model and hero for so many. After consul- tation with the Hall of Fame committee, I felt it was appropriate, and most deserving, to have Steve as the lone inductee this year. Throughout his battle with ALS, he has served as an inspiration to Cougars young and old.” Gleason was a four-year letterwinner in both football and baseball during his time at Washington State (1995-99). On the football field he was a two-time team captain, garnered All-Pacific-10 Conference honors three times and finished his career with 282 tackles, ninth-most in school history. As a member of the baseball team Gleason served as team captain his senior year and his 12 career triples were tied for third when he left. Academically Gleason was a four-time Pacific-10 All- Academic selection for football, including first-team honors his junior and senior seasons. As a senior he was also a GTE Academic All-District VIII First Team selection and received WSU’s Beulah M. Blankenship Outstanding Student-Athlete award and the Student-Ath- lete Advisory Board Outstanding Senior Award. Gleason went on to play in the NFL for seven seasons (2000-07), all with the . As a player he may be best remembered for blocking a punt that resulted in a touchdown in the Saints first game in New Orleans’ in nearly 21 months following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Gleason was diagnosed with ALS in 2011 and since that time he, along with his foundation, Team Gleason, has been a global leader in raising awareness of and improving the lives of those affected by the disease. Gleason will join the current 177 members of the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

ASSISTANT COACHES PORTLAND STATE-WSU SERIES HISTORY

LAST MEETING Sept. 20, 2008 WASHINGTON STATE def. Portland State, 48-9 PULLMAN, Wash. – Third-string quarterback Marshall Lobbestael came off the bench to throw two touch- down passes and Washington State crushed Portland State 48-9 for its first win of the season and first under new coach Paul Wulff.

Defensive Coordinator Running Backs The game was costly for Washington State, which saw starting quarterback Kevin Lopina and backup Gary Mike Breske (Booth) Jim Mastro (Booth) Rogers both knocked out with injuries. Rogers was taken off the field by an ambulance after complaining of neck pains. Portland State (1-2), a Championship Subdivision member of the Big Sky Conference, came in averaging nearly 400 passing yards, but could generate little of- fense against the Cougars of the Pacific-10. Lobbestael, a redshirt freshmen, came in after Rogers was carried off the field with 11:09 left in the third. He threw touchdown passes on the next two possessions and finished 9-for-12 for 149 yards. Offensive Line Special Teams Coordinator Clay McGuire (Field) Eric Russell (Field) Portland State, which throws the ball about 75 percent of the time under coach Jerry Glanville, got just 238 yards through the air as a steady rain made the ball slippery. Washington State had 638 yards of offense. On the first play from scrimmage, Portland State quar- terback Drew Hubel threw the ball to WSU linebacker Hallston Higgins. Chris Ivory later scored on a 5-yard run and the Cougars led 7-0. Portland State had a bizarre drive that was kept alive by three WSU penalties - personal foul, pass interfer- ence and holding - but netted only a 23-yard field goal by Danny Urrego. Defensive Line Outside Wide Receivers Joe Salave’a (Field) Dennis Simmons (Field) Dwight Tardy scored on a 1-yard run on WSU’s next possession for a 14-3 lead after one quarter. The only scoring in the second quarter was Nico Gra- su’s 26-yard field goal that gave WSU a 17-3 lead. Lopina suffered a bruised right shoulder during a sack by Eloka Anyaorah with 3:03 left in the first half, and was replaced by Rogers. On the first possession of the second half, Brandon Gibson caught a short pass from Rogers and got through the PSU defense for a 43-yard touchdown and Outside Linebackers Linebackers a 24-3 lead. Paul Volero (Booth) Ken Wilson (Field) Rogers went down after a shot to the helmet that drew a roughing-the-passer penalty with 11:09 left in the third. He was taken off the field by an ambulance. Lobbestael replaced him and on the second play threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jeshua Anderson for a 31-3 WSU lead. He hit Devin Frischknecht for another touchdown on the next possession, and Grasu added a field goal as the Cougars built a 41-3 lead. Rogers was struck in the helmet by Portland State de- fender Aaron Dickson after he threw a pass. Rogers was on the ground for about 15 minutes. Inside Wide Receivers Strength/Conditioning David Yost (Booth) Jason Loscalzo (Field) All the players from both teams went to the ambulance and stood as medical personnel worked on Rogers and prepared to place him on a stretcher. He complained of neck pains and was taken to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately available. Rogers began the season as the starter before being replaced by Lopina prior to the third game.
