Our 2017 skipper Mohammed Alfar is proving his mettle in Victorian Cricket (Division 1), with some outstanding perfor- mances for Deer Park Cricket Club. In the recently concluded season, Alfar scored 400 runs in 11 one-dayers (40-over games due to Covid re- strictions) to win the Club Best Batsman award as well as find- ing a place in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association (VTCA) Team of the Year, for the sec- ond year running. In the previ- ous year, he scored 547 runs (@ 49.73) and in addition to the above two accolades, Alfar also took home the "Club Champion Player" award. For- mer Peterite all-rounder Ange- lo Emmanuel and Gayan de Silva are the other two Deer Park CC teammates to have found a place in the VTCA Team of Year for 2020/2021. Having been recognized for his leadership qualities, Alfar (23) was given the Senior Assistant Coaching role by his club for this season. His interest in coaching was 'formalized' last year when he completed the Community (Level-one) Coach Accreditation Course in February 2020, conducted by Cricket Australia. He is preparing for his Level Two Coaching Certificate this year. Given his success, as a -keeper batsman, Alfar is fast gaining recognition around the crick- eting circles in Melbourne. If he continues his form, he is destined to play (IA) in the higher league, having an opportunity to rub shoulders with representative players. We wish him all the best. Sent By Chris Drieberg

Page 17 Page 18 TRIBUTE TO MRS. MAGDALENE PERIES Mrs. Magdalene Peries, the beloved mother of three Antonian sporting brothers of the Sixties passed away peacefully in Australia on 14 December 2020. The eldest of the brothers Aubrey who was a champion sprinter and member of the college senior 4x100 metre relay team lives in the UK. The second, Jayantha who now lives in Australia was an all-round sports- man. He was captain and coach of the Senior Basketball team, a member of the 15 man squad of the national schools’ Bas- ketball team and the captain of the first Central Province Basketball team. He also captained the Tennis team, and was an athlete who won the Triple Jump event at the Central Group meet and represented college at the Public schools athletics championship. The youngest of the brothers Prasanna played for the national Basketball team, and was the first in the col- lege history to be awarded the Eagle for Basketball. Mrs. Peries, was seen at most sporting events at college, and was the “wind beneath the wings” of the three sons whenever they were on the Basketball court or the athletics track. She was proud to see her sons being active in all spheres of college life. Jayantha and Prasanna were in the college choir under the legend- ary Cyril Brown, the choir master. Mrs Peries was there at every Christmas and Easter presentation where the choir per- formed to packed audiences. She was a piano teacher herself who gave the appreciation of music to her sons from their early days. Mrs. Peries was actively involved with college, assisting in whatever way she could. College was threatened by the newly elected government in the early sixties, to be “taken over” as a government school. The then OBA and parents rallied to prevent that from happening. The college gates were kept locked and parents and teachers occupied the college buildings to prevent officials from the government from coming in. Mrs. Peries was there among them, along with teachers and a few other parents. When the government was thwarted from their attempts to take over college, it withdrew the financial assistance given to college. College was now totally private having to raise its own funds for the running of the school. The nineteen sixties were challenging times and there were many fund-raising initi- atives by the college to supplement the meagre “facilities fee” of Rs.5 per month levied on the students. There were “bring and buy sales”, and carnivals held to raise funds that needed the assistance of parents, teachers and the OBA. Mrs. Peries was always there to assist in running vari- ous stalls at these functions. However, her contributions were made in an unobtrusive manner, keeping a low profile and never expecting recog- nition for it. One of the major contributions she made to college to augment college revenue was the donation to the college farm of a 500-egg poultry incubator. Rev. Brother Valentine who was in charge of the college farm was eternally grateful to her as this machine, over a year hatched out a few thousand chicks, which helped in no small measure to raise funds and feed 450 boarders and resident staff. The other selfless, lasting contribution she made was to donate a large college flag (around 1967) that flew atop the clock tower on important college milestones and events. It took her a few months to put this flag together. Initially she walked the length and breadth of the Kandy streets to source the ex- act colours of maroon, light blue and dark blue. It had been an exhausting exercise, particularly to find the correct shade of “dark Blue”. At one particular shop, in sheer exasperation, she had asked the shop owner, “do you have material in Double Blue?”. Mrs. Peries went to Melbourne Australia in 1986 to live with Jayantha and his sister Sriyani. No sooner she arrived in Melbourne, she became part of the Australian OBA where Jayantha was an active member. She joined the other ladies such as Mrs. Phyllis Drieberg, Rita Koelmeyer, Yvonne Schrader, Vera Cooray and Nina Poulier (to name a few), who gave strong support to the OBA in raising funds for college. Mrs. Peries was laid to rest on 22 December 2020 at the age of 99 years and 3 months at a beautiful service at St. Brigid’s Church in Mordialloc. There was a large contingent of Antonians present in their college ties among the big gathering in the church. They gave a touching guard of honour as her casket was carried from the church to the waiting hearse for a final goodbye. She will be remembered for her beautiful and welcoming smile for all who knew her, simply as “Mamma”. May her soul rest in peace.

n the picture from L-R: Errol & Bernard VanCuylenburg, Mohan Gomes, Paddy Guneratne, Chris Drieberg, Sisira Weragoda and Basil Hyde ( Antonian Old boys of the 1950s and 1960s ) With apologies to the American song writer Isham Jones, I could not choose a better title to head this article when five old Antonians rendezvoused down a little street in the leafy suburb of Hillsville which is located amidst soul stir- ring picture book scenery in the Yara Valley, to meet, greet and break bread with an old Antonian on holiday here from Tasmania, Sisira Weragoda. There was a slight Old Antonians in Melbourne Sisira Weragoda visits biology Class Basil Hyde visits primary chill in the air, which was soon dispelled by the warmth of our straight from the heart hugs, and we also had help from Mother Nature when the Sun broke through the clouds in all its glory, to add warmth to the ambience of the moment. When one Antonian meets another after a long period of time since leaving College, especially when Antonians are domiciled in foreign lands, the reunion is sheer rapture. Catching up with Sisira was another magic moment when Anthonian camaraderie was manifest at its very best. No matter if one was a boarder or day scholar, irrespective of the age differ- ence, senior or junior, an Anthonian becomes a member of an elite brotherhood in a bond of unity stretching all around the globe. That is how it is, that is how it was, and thus it will be forever and ever. Sisira was in Melbourne on holiday, to touch base with his son Themiya, who lives in Healesville. Themiya owns and runs a very successful restaurant in Healesville called Cha - Chi. Sisira together with his son had invited us for lunch at this restaurant on the 6th May, and we were privileged to be their guests. The guests were Chris Drieberg, Mohan Gomez, Paddy Guneratne, Basil Hyde, Errol VanCuylenburg and the writer. Warmed by warm cups of classic coffee we sat around four tables laid out for us in a separate enclosure on the sidewalk of a charming street. The entire location was straight out of a "Country Gardens" Magazine I 'd like TO WANDER BACK SOMEDAY" is the second line of the song I re- ferred to in the first paragraph. As we made ourselves comfortable in the soft warm sunshine and pleasantries were exchanged, it was not to our childhood homes where we wan- dered back to, but to that hallowed College by the banks of the mighty Mahaveli river, or, that "College on the hill" as I sometimes refer to her - St. Anthony's College, Kandy. As Sisira commented, "It is owing to St. Anthony's that brought us together as students, and fostered the bonds of friendship, that we have remained friends and can reunite this way after so many years...." As we reminisced on our schooldays, the mists of time were parted and we wandered through those places of our schooldays so familiar and beloved to us - the hallowed corridors of St. Anthony's College and the precincts of the College.....we stopped at Weerakoon Gardens, went past the Carmelite Convent, visited the Piggery, and then out through the main gate to Katugastota. Back again past Mr. Shelton Pereira's Boarding just round the sharp curve on the road to Kandy, and down Lady McCallums Drive leading to the famous Ele- phant Bathing spot by the Mahaveli. From there it was back again to college up the hill to The Villa and then to the Refectory, and the road going past the homes of Mr. Cyril Brown, Mr. John Isaacs and Mr.B.L.Fernando. We even climbed the steps leading to the Mansion, and then did a quick tour of The Rainbow Cottage. This was followed by a walk uphill again to the Tuck Shop for "A Bread, a Vadai and a Tea" or a "Tea and a Plantain" - standard fare in the Tuck Shop. And of course, there was also "Saruwath".Better still, we even "scooted" through the little gate by the main refectory, and stopped at the 2-Star " Peratha Cafe" down Siyambalagastenna Road for a "VADI SEENI IS-STRONG THAY EKAK !" (A strong tea with extra sugar !). It tasted like the nectar of the Gods ! And while memories were recollected in all their intensity, each of us had a story to relate. There were tales of teachers who gave us a hard time, and the teachers who won our re- spect and admiration. Now at this stage in our lives, we love them all ! A Boarders life was more daring than the rest ! Smoking, scooting, cutting classes, and later on tales of ro- mance (sigh, sigh, and sigh again...... ) when one's first girlfriend made an appearance like some wandering angel from Heaven ! I wonder where those "missing angels" are to- day?...... While we basked in reliving memories, Themiya who is Mr. Hospitality himself laid out a Cordon Bleu lunch in true continental style comprising dishes only seen in glossy cook books. Judging by the platters served, it is apparent that his Chef Jamie brings a splash of vibrancy to his kitchen. The lunch was music to our stomachs and the medley of dishes served conformed to the highest form of culinary excellence and escapism ! All dishes were served at suitable intervals washed down by a choice of exquisite Red Wine and a Li- queur. The Piece De Resistance was the dessert which was an Austrian Strudel with delicious Ice Cream. But then, the entire meal was a 5 - Star culinary experience. Themiya's Chef I believe should be the role model of "Master Chefs" ! It was soon time for this beautiful experience to end and that meant time for "Goodbyes". Many words express "Goodbyes"...... Farewell, ta-ta, Cherrio, Au Revoir, and saying goodbye is never easy. In "Romeo and Juliet" Shakespeare writes that "parting is such sweet sorrow.....". But the memories we have of the time spent with Sisira will always be with us. And for every 'Goodbye' there is always a second chance to say "Hello". I know we will meet again some sunny day.

Page 23 Page 24 ONLY JESUS CHRIST CAN SAVE MANKIND By Alloy Vancuylenburg

A friend and I recently visited a favorite walking spot of mine. Climbing a windswept hill we crossed a field of wildflowers into a forest of tower- ing pines, then descended into a valley where we paused a moment. Clouds floated softly above us. A stream trickled nearby. The only sounds were bird songs. We stood there silently for fifteen minutes, ob- serving the scenery. As it turns out, our actions that day were happy. According to research from a famous University , people who stop to contemplate nature usual- ly experience higher levels of happiness, lower levels of anxiety, and a greater desire to care for the earth. Walking through the forest isn’t enough, though. You have to watch the clouds, listen to the birds. The key isn’t being in nature, but noticing it. Could there be a spiritual reason for nature’s benefits? St. Paul said that creation reveals God’s power and nature (Romans 1:20). God told Job to look at the sea, sky, and stars for evidence of His presence (Job 38–39). Jesus said that contemplating the “birds of the air” and “flowers of the field” could reveal God’s care and reduce anxiety (Matthew 6:25–30). In Scripture, noticing nature is a spir- itual practice. Scientists wonder why nature affects us so positively. One reason is that by noticing nature we catch a glimpse of the one true God who created everything and who notices us. So let us Pray. Since nature isn’t God, and vice versa, do you think He can be seen through it? How can you take a few minutes today to notice His care through His creation? Lord, all crea- tion reflects Your power in nature. Would You open my eyes today to see something of You, would You open my ears to hear something of You? God of Heaven and Universe, and all nature and Humans, Animals and birds; I worship You today. You are an Amazing most powerful almighty and Merciful God. Thankyou Lord! In Jesus Name I Pray specially for our Alma Mater St Anthony's College Kandy the OSB Priests Staff and Minor staff whose team work helps the Principal to administer the College. Dear Lord God bless the entire Staff and all the students of this happy Roman Catholic College in Sri Lanka stay safe during this dangerous pandemic.

Von Hagt, now 56 years old says he has not been to Sri Lanka since the Trinity Antonian centenary match at Pallekalle in 2017. I will visit Sri Lanka soon specially to see my Mum, when things get settled soon after the covid 19 pandemic. ”I was 19 years when I was picked for the 1984 England tour. too was there in the same side as a budding youngster. We two had been earmarked as future prospects then,” said Von Hagt.“There was a very big competition for a third opener’s slot in the Sri Lanka side then. Sidath and Amal Silva were the set opening batsmen. Then there were many others like Brendon Kuruppu, Athula Samarasekera, Sumithra Warnakulasuriya, and Kapila Jayasuriya to name a few. "There was not much international cricket played during that time. And on the financial front too it was not really de- pendable. For the England trip, I must have received couple of pounds. If you can’t settle yourself in the national side by the time you are about 20, then we had to look for other options for a career. That’s what made me pursue a career in IT and subsequently went to Singapore. Before he moved to Singapore where Marlon also played cricket , he had spent his prime time as a cricketer playing in so many Sri Lanka Board XI games against various visiting international sides here in Sri Lanka. "My most memorable moment was scoring 88 runs at Welagedera for a SL Board team against a touring Pakistan team in 1987. Imran Khan and Wasim Akram were in their prime form that time,” recalled Marlon. "Cricket was played with a lot of passion, "The T20s have changed the game a lot. When I look at the IPL (Indian Premier League) nowadays, I can’t believe how the standard of batting has improved. The 350 for a fifty-over game have become a norm,” he adds. "Yet in our days, we never heard anything about match-fixing. We always produced our best and gave some tough times for some of the best countries of the world,” remarked Von Hagt reminiscing about the international games of the eighties.

Long before that when Marlon played for Sri Lanka Schools vs Australia in Australia, he scored a mammoth 154 - what a great knock that was. He was a technically correct batsman with a very good eye. He led from the front always. Marlon captained St Anthony's College Kandy in 1983 and 1984.He scored 01 double and 08 Centuries in his excellent career for the Alma Mater. He played for Central Province schools and Sri Lanka Schools against visiting foreign teams with distinction. He won many Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Observer awards bringing glory to the College. Marlon played one ODI and One test match for Sri Lanka before migrating to Singapore and Australia. His departure abroad was a great loss to Sri Lankan cricket.
