kitchen general manager Hello Northwood!

I hope everyone is excited that spring has definitely sprung with summer right around the corner. School will be out for the summer in the upcoming weeks and that means the pool will be opening very soon at Northwood. I have mentioned before that we have done some significant work at the pool over the winter months with new furniture coming next week. We are planning an adult only party at the pool on the evening of Friday, May 17. It promises to be tons of adult fun with good food and entertainment around the pool, so be sure to put it on your calendar. The pool will open for the summer the following Friday, May 24, with the family pool party from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; a kick off for the Memorial Day weekend, which promises to be a very big time.

On May 20, plan to come out to Northwood and check out some good golf as we are hosting a U.S. Open Qualifier. The final list of those competing has not been presented to us at this time, but you will see some pretty significant names on the list.

Regarding projects currently on our list; we will be finished with the bridge and parking lot before the pool opens (barring any bad weather), as well as most of our larger landscaping projects. Nothing big is slated for the remainder of summer, which is fine by me. True, we do have lots of odds and ends to tend to all over the campus. However, our focus will be to tend to that which is already in place and above all, to have a great summer.

Believe it or not that is about all I am going write about in this month’s newsletter. Our great club is on track for a great summer!

See you soon at Northwood Club.

Jon bridge a gap...

Has anyone noticed the work being done on the bridge? Actually, technically it is a culvert not a bridge. I am going to call it a bridge because, to be perfectly honest, I did not know what a culvert was until John Stull told me. Anyway, both, a culvert and bridge allow people to get from one side to another usually going over a body of water - both structures bridge a gap.

It got me thinking… I think our entire club could be viewed as a bridge. A bridge that connects generations to generations, bridging gaps in age and backgrounds. Bear with me here. We always hear about all the fabulous amenities Northwood has to offer – golf, tennis, wellness, food, drinks, card games, etc.… But Northwood also offers a more abstract amenity. A place to meet and spend time with those who are older, younger or from different backgrounds – a bridge of sorts. A place to bridge gaps.

I am fifty-one years old. I grew up all over but mainly in the Midwest and moved to in high school and will never leave! I love it! I am thrilled and thankful all of my children were born in Dallas. Anyway, being fifty-one years old puts me smack dab in middle age which means I am blessed to have wonderful friends at Northwood, who are both older and younger than I am. I think members my age could almost be viewed as a bridge between our older members (seniors) and younger members (juniors).

Personally, playing gin in the Men’s 19th Hole and golfing with various groups has allowed me to forge friendships I truly cherish with both older and younger members. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for my friends who are older members. There is a lot of wisdom in this group. And, at the same time, I garner a great deal of positive energy and enthusiasm for the future when I hang with my younger friends at Northwood. Most of them are going through life experiences (getting married, having and raising a family, starting a business, etc.) that I went through years ago. It is awesome to hear their stories, brings back wonderful memories for me. So, I love the time I get to spend with both groups. This makes life much more rewarding.

We have had a lot of new members at Northwood. Many of these members are younger with families. We also have an amazing group of younger members who have been members for years and have contributed greatly to our success.

So, to these younger members, I challenge you to get to know us “older folks.” Please do not ever be afraid to sit down at a table and join a conversation. It can be a bit awkward and maybe a little intimidating but do not let it be. There are a lot of great older members who can share a lot Northwood’s history with you. Heck, some of these old timers will even buy you drink now and then. Do not be afraid to go over the bridge and introduce yourself when you get the chance.

And you “older members” (I am including myself in this group), our younger members are a really energetic, smart, fun and outgoing group. If you let it happen (go back over the bridge), they can bring a great deal of optimism and zeal that we can all use from time to time. As I said, I love han- ging with these younger folks. I get a lot out of it. Many I consider dear friends. I know there are differences between generations. Times have certainly changed, but if we keep an open mind and set aside our differences for awhile, you will make a new friend and get a lot of joy out of it. I do.

This Spring, I hope we will all use the Northwood bridge to meet an older or younger member whatever your case may be; it is one of the best amenities at the Club. Trust me!

See you at the Club, Scott food & Beverage Thank you to all the members and their families who made our Easter Brunch so successful. Now we are gearing up for Mother’s Day on May 12. Please make your reservations as space is filling up quickly. We cannot wait to serve you!

We have successfully opened our cafe concept at The Turn last month. We offer deiclious coffee items from White Rock Coffee Company and we make fresh housemade smoothies. If you have not had a chance to visit The Turn, please come give it a try. The hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. daily. Dayan will be there, with a smile, waiting for you.

Our Wine Committee selected JCB, Cotes De Provence Rosé as our featured rose for the summer. Stop by the Open Bar or 1946 and try a glass or bottle. JCB No. 5 Rosé was selected in honor of the winemakers sister, Nathalie. Her favorite number, 5, and her favorite region to visit to inspire and energize her free spirit - Provence! The visual is a brilliant, rose-petal pink in color with purple nuances. The nose is delicate with scents of red berries, citrus and spicy white blossoms. The palatte is soft and delectable on the palate with floral notes and flavors of white fruit, which boasts a remarkable balance and fresh finish. This is a must try.

Chef and his team unveiled our new spring menu in April. The feedback has been very positive so make your reservations for dinner in 1946 and see for yourself.

Lastly, please welcome Elizabeth Hanson to the food and beverage team. She joined us as our new full time dining room hostess. membership Update I am happy to report that there are nearly thirty members who are actively sponsoring their friends for membership at Northwood Club. I hardly know where to begin. There is a palpable buzz around campus as projects are nearing completion, new venues are opened up for events and finishing touches are added to enhance the member experience.

On the wine front we hosted one of the most exclusive Napa Valley winemakers, Hundred Acre. Of course we want to send a special thank you out to Nick Literski, who joined us from the winemaker, and while the dinner was small, the feedback has included comments saying it was one of the finest wine dinners ever hosted at Northwood. Naturally, we are excited to follow up Hundred Acre with another exceptional winemaker, and one with a close tie to Texas. Palmaz Family Vineyards are a collaboration of an Argentine family in San Antonio, who came together to revitalize one of Napa Valley’s oldest wineries. The result as the kind of juice you want to always have access to.

Chef Matthew is putting together a fanciful four-course dinner where we will highlight Riesling, Chardonnay, Muscat and four vintages of their estate cabernet. Dinner is limited to thirty seats, as the wine is difficult to come by. I know I am personally interested in doing a side-by-side comparison of four vintage years from this amazing producer! A reception with dinner to follow will be held in the Wine Room on Thursday, May 23 at 6:00 pm. Reservations can be made by calling 972-239-1366.

The highlight of my April had to be the fantastic Concert on the Green that was held this past Saturday, April 27. Planned as the Saturday evening entertainment of the Dos Amigos (Member-Member) Golf Tournament, it was the inaugural event hosted at Northwood’s Club Garden. Chef prepared an nice array of grilled steaks, chilled seafood, and some lobster mac‘n’cheese that was out of this world. We had beautiful weather, great lighting and setup, a group of about one hundred and sixty and music provided by Fort Worth’s own, Andy Meadows. The night was magical as anyone who attended can attest. I hope this will be the first of many nights we host in this space and may they all be as much of a home run as Saturday’s event.

Now we are all diligently preparing for the upcoming opening of the pool. As you visit the Club in the coming days you will see lots of changes taking place. New patio furniture will arrive next week, the play set has been replaced \ and updates to the Veranda and Men’s 19th Hole are currently underway. We are so lucky to be here while the Club is investing in its own long term success. I cannot wait to see the finished product! If you have not made it out out lately, I hope you stop by and see us. Call and make a reservation to join us for dinner, ‘tis the season for dining on the Veranda overlooking #18 green. Just remember this space is in high demand and reservations made in advance will insure your requests can be accommodated.

Here is to an amazing summer! Cheers!

Eric kitchen Spring has definitely sprung! We have activities going on all over the Club. The team is ready and working hard to provide you with a great experience every time. I would like to give special thanks to the entire Food & Beverage staff who worked long, hard hours in order to feed over one-thousand and six hundred members and guests over the Easter weekend. It was a tough process behind the scenes to make sure we could pull everything together. We had good success with the newly formatted Dos Amigos Golf Tournament and a fun weekend that featured awesome golfing and the Concert on the Green event on Saturday night out at Fogelson Garden. It was a first for Northwood and I think we pulled off a rather nice party. Fogelson Garden is starting to slowly sprout some small tomatoes, strawberries, herbs and everything else that is starting to come in nicely as well. It will not be long now until harvest time begins. Please enjoy this wonderful Peanut Butter Mousse recipe below!

Peanut Butter Mousse 9 oz. sour cream 9 oz. powdered sugar 13 oz. creamy peanut butter 3 oz. whole milk 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream 1 ¼ oz. envelope gelatin ½ cup heavy whipping cream 8 oz. chopped, roasted peanuts

Place the first four ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Using a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the ingredients on medium speed until incorporated, being certain to scrape the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. In a separate mixing bowl, using a mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the one and a half cups of heavy cream on medium high speed, until very thick but not stiff, about 2-4 minutes. Turn mixer off. In a small microwave safe bowl, pour quarter of the half cup of heavy cream. Sprinkle the packet of gelatin on top of the cold cream and allow it to bloom for five minutes. Blooming gelatin allows the granules to soak up the liquid making it easier to dissolve with heat. After five minutes, heat the gelatin and cream mixture in the microwave for thirty seconds or just until the mixture is fluid and all granules are dissolved. Whisk the other quarter cup heavy cream into this warmed mixture. Turn mixer with whipped cream back on medium high speed and quickly pour the gelatin mixture into the thickened cream and whip for five seconds until the gelatin is incorpora- ted, being very certain not to overmix. Using a rubber spatula, fold one third of the cream mixture into the peanut butter mixture until mostly stirred in. Repeat this until all the thickened cream is incorporated into the peanut butter mix. Then fold in the chopped roasted peanuts. Garnish with whipped cream, chocolate slivers, more peanuts or even Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! We certainly had our fill of April showers, did we not? After two consecutive rain-outs of the Men’s ABCD Tournament earlier this month, we were a little more fortunate in the weather department to complete our Member-Member (Dos Amigos) to close out the month. Despite the rain and some cooler days, the and our greens are in spectacular condition. By the number of rounds that we are experiencing at the Club, the membership is excited to play and enjoy our amazing golf course.

Last month, we started our Nine, Wine and Dine series, which had terrific participation and feedback from everyone that played. On a Friday evening, we had fifty-six members it up for nine holes and enjoyed a great cookout by Chef Matthew at the pool pavilion. A great time was had by all and everyone enjoyed the relaxed, social atmosphere. We have another event planned for Thursday, May 16, so please be on the lookout for details on that and I hope you will join us.

In this month’s newsletter, there is a complete wrap-up of the 2019 Dos Amigos Tournament. What a fantastic weekend for our Club and it was great to see everyone closely following the shootout after Sunday’s final round. Congratulations to the 2019 Overall Champions David Basso & Mark Hall. The duo was the last team standing following a ten team shootout. Basso & Hall defeated the team of David Boisture and Chase Perry on the first extra playoff hole by sinking a twenty foot par saving putt for the team. On Saturday evening, the Club hosted the Concert on the Green featuring Andy Meadows. The evening was spectacular and was a great highlight to this fabulous weekend.

In May, I would encourage everyone to bring a spouse, significant other or another friend from the Club to our Couples Putting Tournament on Friday, May 4. The best aspect of the putting tournament is that you do not even need great golf skills to participate. The couples putting tournament is a terrific social mixer, with golfers and non-golfers alike. There will be two flights of competition and we will putt several greens on the course starting at 4:30 p.m.

Later this month, we have our Men’s and Women’s Senior Club Championship to look forward to. The men will have the option of playing in their respective age group, which will award Gross and Net Champions or the Championship Flight. Women have the option to play in the Championship Flight (Gross Scores) or the First Flight (Net scores). Best of luck to our defending Champions, Bob Elliott and Emily Hillsman!

On Monday, May 20, Northwood Club will serve as a venue for the 2019 US Open Sectional Qualifier. Professional golfers from the PGA Tour and Web.com alongside skilled amateurs will tee it up on our course for the right to advance to the US Open in June at . We are anticipating a great field of players, as our venue was selected as the main qualifying site for the PGA Tour. Players will play eighteen holes at Northwood, and eighteen holes at Bent Tree Country Club, for a thirty-six hole day. Tee times will start as early as 7 a.m, and play will be contested through approximately 7:00 p.m. this day. As soon as I have additional information on the field, I will be sure to release all the details to the membership. Members are encouraged to attend the day and take in the great golf on our course.

With the great pride we all feel with our new course, we must also carry that same sense of pride for caring for our golf course. It takes all of us to remind each other and utilize good habits to care and respect our great course. Please remember that we are cart path only, and while we are on the paths, remember to take your sand bottle with you to the fairway. Be sure to pick up your , fix your ball marks, properly dispose of any trash and rake the bunkers while playing. We all want to enjoy the best golf experience at the Club and so do our friends.

Finally, I leave off this month by wishing a fond farewell to Assistant Golf Professional, Ben Farley. Ben has officially announced his resignation from Northwood Club and his final day will be Saturday, May 4. Over the past fourteen months, Ben has served as our Junior Golf Coordinator, and has done a tremendous job with leaving his mark on our Club during his tenure. Ben has been a great asset to my team and has done very well with mana-ging our junior programming. I know my staff and I will greatly miss Ben. We wish him the best of luck in his future career outside the golf business. Please stop by the shop to share your wishes for Ben before his final day.

Fairways and Greens, Bryan Director of AGRONOMY Now we are cooking. Finally, soil temperatures are back to average for the Dallas area. For the past two months our soil temperatures have run five to seventeen degrees below average. This has been extremely beneficial to our cool season grasses such as bentgrass greens and fescue rough. However, the bermudagrass has been merely green but not growing. The greens have benefited most from these lower soil temperatures as they have recovered from fall stresses which had required us to limit play on greens in November. The greens have matured nicely and are in a healthy state. The downside of such healthy greens, and the push to get them there, is the increased growth rate. This might sound good, but when you come out after lunch to play the greens, putt much slower as the grass grows through the day. Increasing the growth rate to encourage coverage of grass on the greens was intentional as we had some ground to make up after last fall. However, the negative has been complaints of slow green speeds. Now that the greens have recovered and we have decreased the fertility amounts to push the grass to grow, green speeds are now manageable and more consistent through the entirety of the day. For the past month we have seen green speeds of ten and a half inches to eleven inches in the morning. Our target green speed, adopted by the Agronomic Standards of the previous Green Committee and from the Golf Course Architect is between ten inches to ten and a half on the stimp meter.

With the warmer weather and potential of frosts and freezes behind us, plant material is arriving weekly for several landscape projects occurring around the club. The first two phases of landscaping have been completed and there is much more to come in May. Most notable are the new landscaped areas around the short game practice area and the tennis hillside. Additional parking lot landscaping will commence as the parking lot renovation work draws to a close. Much of this landscaping is being installed by an outside contractor who has worked with our in-house landscape designer and Horticulturist Missy Snodgrass.

Kat Dos Amigos Summary

The 2019 Dos Amigos (Member-Member) Tournament was an unforgettable weekend of fun, golf and camaraderie for everyone that played. A total of sixty teams teed it up in this year’s tournament, including four lady/lady teams. Featuring warm, windy weather the course was in spectacular condition following a five and a half inches of rainfall earlier in the week.

On Saturday in round one, teams played a best ball and shamble format. Several great rounds were posted, but none were better than the sixty-three shot by Mitch Gervis and John Ralph. The team carded two eagles on the back nine. Grant Christopher and Thomas Gresham shot a sixty-four highlighted by a twenty-nine on the back nine! Also carding a twenty-nine for an opening round of sixty-four was CW Kendall and Tim Jackson. After the opening round, all seven flights were in a tight race heading into day two.

On Saturday evening, the membership enjoyed a beautiful spring night at Fogelson Garden, featuring music from Andy Meadows. Chef Matthew provided a gourmet feast and with the music going, most everyone was on their feet dancing.

Sunday’s final round featured a scramble and modified scotch format. Most everyone would agree that the alternate shot segment of the tournament was the most challenging and difficult to navigate. The team of Thomas Gresham and Grant Christopher were not phased as they shot a round two score of net sixty-one and four tenths, leading to the low tournament score of one hundred twenty-five and four tenths. Other great rounds from Sunday included Lindsay Brown and Steve Woram who carded their second consecutive sixty-five, Bob Elliott and Randy Hill with a net sixty-four and two tenths, Chris Crosby and Robb Boudreaux with a sixty-two and six tenths and the ladies team of Kimberly Page and Nancy Wechsler with a fabulous net sixty-three.

All the flight winners and three lowest teams not winning a flight proceeded to the ten team shootout starting on hole #16. At the end of the shootout, David Basso and Mark Hall were up against David Boisture and Chase Perry with an additional sudden death playoff hole needed to determine the Champions. On the first extra hole, Basso and Hall defeated Boisture and Perry after Hall sunk a twenty foot par saving putt.

The Golf Shop Staff would like to thank everyone for participating in the 2019 Dos Amigos Golf Tournament and a special thanks to our Committee of Robb Boudreaux, Tim Jackson and Steve Woram. Results

It has been a great season for TCD tennis up at the Hilltop! TCD (Tennis Competitors of Dallas), is a league that Northwood has ten teams in currently that we host every Thursday morning. April 25 was the last day for the Spring season and we enjoyed a lot of awesome e matches to end off the season. Thank you to all of our TCD team captains for all that you do!

Now that TCD is over, we move into USTA season so do not expect it to slow down up here any time soon! The United States Tennis Association has four Northwood teams participating in it currently. Their matches will take place Thursday mornings as well. Each team will play three lines of doubles matches and two lines of singles matches. We expect great things from these ladies and are excited to add an additional USTA team this season!

Lastly, I want to send out a huge congratulations to one of our TCD teams, Serve me a Double, for an amazing win on the April 25. These ladies worked hard and brought home the win for their division. Great job ladies!

Total Body Training Will

Weight loss remains the number one reason that Americans begin an exercise program or join a health club. Yet for many, it seems as if the hours spent on the treadmill or elliptical rarely produce the desired changes.

While heavy aerobic activity is a great way to improve your cardiovascular health and burn calories, it is really only one part of a substantial weight loss program. More and more, fitness professionals and weight loss specialists are incorporating various forms of resistance training into their plans to help clients manage their waistlines.

On top of maintaining health and vitality, improving posture and mobility, resilience to injury, overall health and strength training also helps to add and preserve lean body mass. Improve- ments in lean body mass help us to maintain or increase our metabolic rate. A study publi- shed in the Journal of Sports Medicine in 2006 reported that resistance training significantly improves the body’s ability to maintain lean body mass and metabolic efficiency over dieting , cardio or a combination of the two. Weight Loss Approach Dieng Alone Cardio + Diet Resistance Training % of Fat Loss per Pound 69% 78% 97% % of Muscle Loss Per Pound 31% 22% 3%

Stiegler P, Cunliffe A. (2006). The role of diet and exercise for the maintenance of fat-free mass and resting metabolic rate during weight loss. Sports Medicine. 2006;36(3): 239-263.

Over the next three publications of the Wellness Newsletter, we will look at three types of resistance training methods that will help you burn excess body fat and build lean body mass. In this month’s issue, we will look at Total-Body Resistance Training and how to apply it for weight-loss.

Total Body Training (TBT) incorporates the use of compound, multi-joint exercises that require higher levels of muscular stabilization, core activation and metabolic demand (calories burned). Additionally, TBT often mimics many of the movement patterns used in daily life, adding a functional element to your training.

Here is another great benefit to this style of training. Due to the amount of muscle mass used, in combination with the higher total repetitions compared to other training methods, Total Body Training can help boost the body’s natural production of testosterone and growth hor- mone in both men and women. Take a look at the sample program to see how easy it is to setup a TBT program for yourself.
