FRIENDSHIPS TRIUMPH AT SINGAPORE COMMUNITY GAMES FINALS 120 Inter-Residents’ Committee/Neighbourhood Committee (Inter-RC/NC) Competitions have been lined up islandwide as part of Singapore Community Games since it was launched in April 2016

After two months of back-to-back sports action with friends and neighbours, the Singapore Community Games (SCG) champions will emerge at the Finals for , , Sepaktakraw and Table . From the initial 505 teams, after 64 competition match-days with a total of 900 matches, one team for each sport will be crowned SCG national champion on Sunday, 5 June 2016 at Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex (level two competition hall). Madam Halimah Yacob, Speaker of Parliament and Adviser to - GRC Grassroots Organisations will join the residents at the SCG 2016 Finals.

2 The SCG brings together residents of different ages, races and living across different estates through sports. Despite the uncommon requirements, more teams than expected were formed, with many displaying high standards of play and showcasing the unique multi-culturalism and multi-racialism of Singapore.

3 The CSC Basketball Team is a good example. The basketball team consists of players of different ethnicities. Led by assistant team manager Vincent Koh, the team has progressed well to the knock-out stage at this year’s SCG. Vincent is also the key-driver of the team, inviting residents playing at the neighbourhood basketball courts to join him in the Games. He said, “Our team may consist of people from different races, but it has never been an obstacle. In fact, we get to know about each other’s culture better through our regular interaction during and outside of our training sessions. The SCG not only provided us with the opportunity to test our skills, but also the chance for us to know our neighbours better. While the competition is important, we certainly treasure the friendships we have established along the way more.”

4 As part of the SCG, the Inter-Residents’ Committee/Neighbourhood Committee (Inter-RC/NC) Competitions was launched in April 2016. The Inter- RC/NC Competitions, which will run till the end of 2016, feature a wide range of modified sports that are easily accessible and can be easily picked up by residents of different abilities. To date, 17 friendly matches had been held and over 100 more have been lined-up until the end of the year.

5 To encourage more residents to pick up sports, there will also be a large- scale gathering of new and interesting sports workshops and pop-up clinics organised by the People’s Association at the Finals. The pop-up clinics and workshops will occupy the entire football field and multi-purpose hall, covering sports such as Fuzionball, Modified Tennis, Kin-Ball, Tchoukball, Frisbee, Walking Football, Baseball and Cricket. The public are welcomed to join the pop- up clinics and workshops to try out the various sports.
