- 0 - Stenographic reports of all the produc ti on economy co nfer­ encos at the Biltmore Hotol between the Producers' Branch 2.nd the other four Branches of the Academy are on file in the S~crctary ' s office and may be consulted by any member of the Academy. -2-

The Conference Dinner at the Biltmor~, July 28, although held on short notice , was attended by ov~r two hundred Academy members.

Now that the pressuro of cconomy conferences is over~ the several other projects of Academy activity, temporarily held up , are being resumed. These i nclude the plan to cooperate ~th the University of Southern CalifC'r:ri9. in establishing certain vocation­ al courses; the early pUblicnti 'on of a first number of a credi t ­ abl e periodical representing the Academy; the plans for produc .. ing 'a benefit motion picture ; the prearation of c report by the committee on Awards of Merit ; the resumption of activity by the Building o..nd Finance Committee with relation +'0 E', sui table structur e for housing the Academy , and ths el~ooration of plans to establish under the sponsorship of the Acadony, a research llild technical library and an experimental laboratory.

According to the Constitution and By -L ~ws of the Academy the first steps in preparing for the 2.Ylnuo.,l elections of the Academy and its Branches will take place early in September when all the Branch executive committees are required to meet in regular session and appoi nt nominating committees of seven active members of each class, who will then proceed to nomlnate three candid.ates for each Brench for the Board of Directors and f ive candidateS for each Brunch executive committee . These nominations must be posted thirty days before the cnnual elections and as the - 3 - elections occur on the third Sc.turdo.y in October , nhich this yenr fo.lls on October 15, itis nppurent tho..t the Brc~nch nomin[~ting committees must uct promptly. There is now , therefore, approxi­ matly a month' s time for calvassing among the memberShip regard­ i ng available candidates for directors and executive committees. This first year wi ll be a crucial period for the Acaderl1Y and it follows that the best material the membership affords should be drafted f or service .

- 0 - The nominations for Board of Directors and Executive Conmittees will be posted in the Secretary's office thirty days before elec­ tion and there may then be noninated oppo sition tickets for peti­ tions signed by any fifteen active members in any Branch, whi eh must be filed and posted twenty days before election. Five days luter ballots with all the nD.r.les of nominnted candidates will be mo. iled to the membership of each of the five branches . Members will then mo.rk their ballots c..nd .r:1Ui l or deliver them to the Secretary's office on or before Saturdo.y , October 15, up to six P .E . One week later the o.n11uo.l Acc..deL1Y meeting takes pluce uncl the results of tho elections will be formally nnnounced.

- 0 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was chartered un~ der the laws of California, May 4, 1927, and founded at an organization dinner at the Biltmore Hotel May 11, 1927. The active membership is divided into five branches: Actors, Direc~ tors, Producers, Technicians and Writers, each branch being represented on the Board of Directors by three members. In addition to this central organi­ zation, each branch as provided by the Constitution and By-Laws, has an executive committee of five members, elected by the branch membership. The purposes of the Academy are to unite and coordinate the five ma­ jor branches of motion picture production for the welfare, advancement and protection of the industry and profession. Qualifications for Active Membership are: "Any person who has accomplished distinguished work or acquired distin­ guished standing in or made valuable contribution to the production branches .. of the motion picture industry, directly or indirectly, and who is of good moral and personal standing may become an active member of the Academy by vote of the Board of Directors, on recommendation of the Committee on
