Abstract The thesis focuses on the comparative analysis of Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit, or There and Back Again (1937) and two works which significantly influenced him: George MacDonald’s Princess and the Goblin (1872) and Edith Nesbit’s Enchanted Castle (1907). The first part of the thesis chronologically describes the development of English children’s fantasy literature. The above-mentioned authors are characterized from the perspective of their life and work. The second and the main part focuses on the comparison of the discussed works, especially on the comparison of fantastic elements such as fairy-tale characters, a journey to the unknown, a fight against evil, magical objects and magic space (the castle, the forest, the abandoned landscape). This interpretation is based on Tolkien’s concept of fairy tales and fantasy and Propp’s analysis of fairy tales. Anotace Práce se zabývá srovnávací analýzou Tolkienova fantasy příběhu The Hobbit, or There and Back Again (1937), a dvou děl, která Tolkiena významným způsobem ovlivnily: George MacDonaldovy pohádky The Princess and the Goblin (1872) a fantasy románu Edith Nesbitové The Enchanted Castle (1907). První část práce chronologicky popisuje vývoj britské dětské fantasy literatury. Výše zmínění autoři jsou charakterizováni z hlediska jejich života i literární tvorby. Druhá a zároveň hlavní část práce se zaměřuje na komparaci analyzovaných děl, především na komparaci konkrétních fantastických prvků jako jsou pohádkové postavy, cesta do neznáma, boj proti zlu, magické předměty a kouzelný prostor (zámek, les, opuštěná krajina). Interpretace bude vycházet z Tolkienova pojetí významu pohádky a fantazie a z Proppovy analýzy pohádek. 'A Merrier World:' Small Renaissances Engendered in J. R. R. Tolkien's Legendarium Abstract After surviving the trenches of World War I when many of his friends did not, Tolkien continued as the rest of the world did: moving, growing, and developing, putting the darkness of war behind. He had children, taught at the collegiate level, wrote, researched. Then another Great War knocked on the global door. His sons marched off, and Britain was again consumed. The "War to End All Wars" was repeating itself and nothing was for certain. In such extended dark times, J. R. R. Tolkien drew on what he knew-language, philology, myth, and human rights-peering back in history to the mythologies and legends of old while igniting small movements in modern thought. Arthurian, Beowulfian, African, and Egyptian myths all formed a bedrock for his Legendarium, and fantasy-fiction as we now know it was rejuvenated.Just like the artists, authors, and thinkers from the Late Medieval period, Tolkien summoned old thoughts to craft new creations that would cement themselves in history forever.

Volume 13, Issue 2 November 2016 Linking fantasy to everyday life: Patterns of orientation and connections to reality in the case of The Hobbit Uwe Hasebrink, University of Hamburg, Germany Ingrid Paus-Hasebrink, University of Salzburg, Austria Abstract: How do viewers of fantasy link this symbolic material to their everyday lives? Starting from theoretical approaches that regard popular culture as a resource for coping with challenges of social circumstances and of everyday life we develop the argument that different patterns of orientation towards cultural products go along with different references to reality. We take The Hobbit as a particular case of a popular product and the World Hobbit Project with its global data on viewers’ reactions to these films as the basis for our research. Based on standardised indicators for viewers’ interest in The Hobbit itself, in Tolkien’s world, in the genre of fantasy, and in ‘big cinema’ in general we identify distinct patterns of orientation that go along with differences regarding film appreciation and perceived functions of fantasy. By means of a qualitative analysis of open answers from Austria and Germany regarding broader issues and aspects of personal relevance that are raised by the film we identify relevant ways and topics, by which viewers link the film to their everyday life, e.g. the current refugee crisis. Based on that, we conduct a quantitative analysis showing that the patterns of orientation go along with different references to the real world. Davis Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada Carolyn Michelle University of Waikato, New Zealand Ann Hardy University of Waikato, New Zealand Craig Hight University of Waikato, New Zealand Abstract: Audiences for blockbuster event-film sequels and adaptations often formulate highly developed expectations, motivations, understandings and opinions well before the films are released. A range of intertextual and paratextual influences inform these audience prefigurations, and are believed to frame subsequent audience engagement and response. In our study of prefigurative engagements with Peter Jackson’s 2012 film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, we used Q methodology to identify five distinct subjective orientations within the film’s global audience. As this paper illustrates, each group privileges a different set of extratextual referents – notably J.R.R. Tolkien’s original novels, Peter Jackson’s The Lord of The Rings film trilogy, highly localised political debates relating to the film’s production, and the previous associations of the film’s various stars. These interpretive frames, we suggest, competed for ascendancy within public and private discourse in the lead up to The Hobbit’s international debut, effectively fragmenting and indeed polarising the film’s prospective global audience.     Unseen Horrors: The Unmade Films of Hammer Thesis submitted by Kieran Foster In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2019 Abstract This doctoral thesis is an industrial study of Hammer Film Productions, focusing specifically on the period of 1955-2000, and foregrounding the company’s unmade projects as primary case studies throughout. It represents a significant academic intervention by being the first sustained industry study to primarily utilise unmade projects. The study uses these projects to examine the evolving production strategies of Hammer throughout this period, and to demonstrate the methodological benefits of utilising unmade case studies in production histories. Chapter 1 introduces the study, and sets out the scope, context and structure of the work. Chapter 2 reviews the relevant literature, considering unmade films relation to studies in adaptation, screenwriting, directing and producing, as well as existing works on Hammer Films. Chapter 3 begins the chronological study of Hammer, with the company attempting to capitalise on recent successes in the mid-1950s with three ambitious projects that ultimately failed to make it into production – Milton Subotsky’s Frankenstein, the would-be television series Tales of Frankenstein and Richard Matheson’s The Night Creatures. Chapter 4 examines Hammer’s attempt to revitalise one of its most reliable franchises – Dracula, in response to declining American interest in the company. Notably, with a project entitled Kali Devil Bride of Dracula. Chapter 5 examines the unmade project Nessie, and how it demonstrates Hammer’s shift in production strategy in the late 1970s, as it moved away from a reliance on American finance and towards a more internationalised, piece-meal approach to funding.

Danielson: Re-reading the Map of Middle-earth Introduction In Chapter 1 of The Hobbit, we learn of our protagonist Bilbo Baggins that “He loved maps, and in his hall there hung a large one of the Country Round with all his favourite walks marked on it in red ink” (Tolkien 1966, p. 32-33). Some decades later, Bilbo's distant cousin Pippin laments his failure to have fully consulted the maps available in Rivendell before the Fellowship departed on its long journey (Tolkien 1965a, p. 370). From a handful of references such as these, we know that cartography existed in Middle-earth, and indeed that it was considered a perfectly ordinary and sensible thing to look at a map to find one's way.
