Mike Nesbitt (@Coach_Nesbitt) leads OUAZ into a second season of compeition after the team completed a 7-4 season in 2018. He took control of the startup program when he was annoucned as the head coach on April 28, 2017. Entiering the 2019 season – his sixth as a collegiate head coach – Nesbitt has a career record of 32 wins against 21 losses.

During the program’s first season, Nesbitt organized a Spirit offense that ranked third in the NAIA by averaging 533.0 yards of total offense per game.

Nesbitt has had two OUAZ players named NAIA All- American and others earn the SAC Defensive Player of the Year, SAC Newcomer of the Year, and SAC Special Teams Player of the Year honors.

Nesbitt has over 20 years of coaching experience, and he came to OUAZ from West Texas A&M University, where he served as head football coach for four seasons. Nesbitt restructured and molded their program with athletes and coaches who possessed strong character, high values, and outstanding leadership skills. He sought out recruits who were exceptional young people from all across the country. Under Nesbitt’s direction, the football program had the highest team GPA ever in school history. OUAZ tallied three sacks in the win, getting two from Bradford and the third from Alema Collins. The Spirit defense entered the game as the NAIA leader in takeaways and they got three more on Saturday. Adding to the Farria fumble recovery, Marcos Garcia recovered a fumble in the red zone on the Lion’s second possession and Amare Burks had an interception to halt a third-quarter drive.

Burks led the Spirit with 10 total tackles, including eight solo stops. Rylen Kaniaupio had nine tackles and Justin Barnett had eight and one tackle-for-loss.

The win leaves the Spirit as the only undefeated team in the Sooner Athletic Conference and one of just 10 teams in the NAIA without a loss this season.
