GREATER LANSING AMATEUR GOLF ASSOCIATION August 2017

It’s that time of the year: All City, all the time On the eve of our annual Greater Lansing Amateur Golf Association All City Championship – this year graciously sponsored by longtime GLAGA supporter and competitor Bob Matthiesen’s Pop-ity Popcorn – we bring you some classic Dan Jenkins, writing from Augusta National after Tigers Woods had just consumed the 1997 Masters:

“As you’ve probably heard by now, Tiger’s overwhelming performance may have made this Masters the tournament that changed golf forever, changed golf course design forever, and changed society forever.

“Tiger’s rounds of 70-66-65-69 for a stunning total of 270 broke the old 72-hole record that was held by and . In doing this, Tiger won by 12 strokes. Another record in majors, for modern times anyhow. It’s topped only by the 13-shot victory of in the British Open of 1862, which took place over 36 holes when only four people owned a set of clubs.

“And that mark has only been equaled by Young Tom Morris in the 1870 British Open, also at , when only eight people owned a set of clubs.”

Though there have been years when the All City champion had some breathing room coming down the stretch – Carson Castellani won the second of his three straight Open Championship titles by nine strokes in 2013 – the final rounds on Sunday afternoon at Forest Akers East and West likely will produce some memorable moments for those in contention for division honors.

Best of luck to all who will put a peg or two in the ground this weekend, and may the course be with you.

Chip shots The first half of the GLAGA season has included many great shots (too numerous to mention here) as well as a couple of spectacular ones. In the opening round of the Spring Medal, Tyler Curtis wedged an ace on the 115-yard 8th hole at Timber Ridge. It was Tyler’s first- ever hole-in-one.

Two weeks later at The Emerald, Gray Tuttle fired a 4-under-par 68 Here’s to No. 1 and No. 2: in the stroke play portion of the Tyler Curtis (above) was all Mid-Michigan Match Play. Tuttle’s smiles after recording his first- round included not only a rare ever ace in the Spring Medal. Meanwhile, Gray Tuttle (at double eagle 2 at the 465-yard, right) didn’t see his double par-5 15th hole but also an eagle 3 eagle land in the Cup at The th at No. 7, a 512-yard par 5. Emerald’s 15 hole but he was certainly happy to pluck it out Not to be outdone later that same of the cup. afternoon, Matt “Jersey Giant” Slocum double-eagled the 443-yard, par-5 17th hole to close out his quarterfinal match victory.

Three incredible shots in the span of two weeks. Might there be more heroics this weekend? Next on the tee There are three events remaining on this year’s GLAGA schedule:
