Eyam Parish Statement (draft)

Eyam is located approximately 6.5 miles north of , just off the A623, northeast of . It became famous locally in 1665 when the plague arrived there in a parcel of cloth. Under the instruction of the local vicar, the villagers decided to cut themselves off from the surrounding area to prevent the plague from spreading. The impact the plague had on the village is retold through a series of plaques and information boards around the village and at the village museum which is dedicated to this story. Eyam Conservation Area was designated in 1993; the appraisal describes the village as sitting along a geological line between the millstone grit and shales to the north and carboniferous limestone to the south. The village is located within the White Peak area of National Park. This area is characterised by limestone village farmlands, clusters of stone dwellings and relict mine shafts and associated lead mining remains. (LSAP 2009) Eyam Parish Statement (draft)
