WHEREAS, over the past 55 years, has paved the way for the music artists -·-- of today as one of the pioneers of Rock 'n' Roll; and

WHEREAS, born in St. Louis, Missouri in I 926, Chuck Berry took an interest in music at an early age. He first performed while in high school and took his first step into music history when a meeting with Muddy Waters turned into a record deal with Leonard Chess of ; and

WHEREAS, Chuck Berry embarked on a fast track to success with his adaptation of the country song "Ida Red" entitled, "" that reached #I on the Billboard Rhythm and Blues chart and the opening of his racially integrated St. Louis-based nightclub, Berry's Club Bandstand. More hits came with "", "No Particular Place To Go", "You Never Can Tell", "School Days" and "Nadine"; and

WHEREAS, even beginning a small film career appearing in two early rock 'n' roll movies first being Rock Rock Rock, released in I 956 shown singing "You Can't Catch Me" and a speaking role as himself in the I 959 film Go, Johnny, Go! along with Alan Freed, performing his songs "Johnny B. Goode," "Memphis, Tennessee," and "Little Queenie."; and

WHEREAS, Chuck Berry established himself as music legend with one his greatest hits, a live-recording of"My Ding-A-Ling", receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in I 984 and being the first round of inductees for the Hall of Fame in I 986; and

WHEREAS, Chuck Berry can be noted as one of the greatest entertainers of all time and boasts such accolades as the Kennedy Center Honors in 2000, one of Time Magazine's 2009 list of the "10 best Electric Guitar Players of All-Time," number six on the Rolling Stone's list of the "I 00 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", ranked fifth out of "The Immortals - The I 00 Greatest Artists of All Time." Additionally, "Johnny B. Goode" ranked first place in the "100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time"; and

WHEREAS, overcoming hardship and racial injustice, Chuck Berry is a leader of his industry and a originator of American sound, influencing greats such as , and The Who; and

NOW, THEREFORE, let it be resolve that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council hereby recognizes Chuck Berry on this day, July 2, 2010, hereto after known as Chuck Berry Day. He is an American and international icon, forever and irrevocably tied to music history. May his music continue to influence professional and aspiring artists for generations to come.
