• Liberty captured its first back-to-back Big South volleyball titles. • Liberty has now won five Big South volleyball championships, tying Winthrop for the most in conference history. For the second year in a row, Liberty Athletics captured the Big South’s Sasser Cup trophy, an award given annually to the top performing • In the NCAA Tournament, the Lady Flames took a set from Final Four qualifiers athletics department among all member institutions. Men’s Team The 2009 season looks promising for the Liberty men’s cross country squad, and head coach Brant Tolsma is looking toward a fi ft h straight Big South Championship. He will look to his top two runners, Sam Chel- anga and Evans Kigen, to guide this year’s team to reaching that goal. “We should be a fairly mature team on the men’s side,” Tolsma said. “We’d like to make a good run at getti ng the team to the nati onal championship. If we can’t do that, I think we can qualify two individuals.” Chelanga, widely considered to be the top returning runner in the nati on, enjoyed consistent success on the trails last season, winning fi ve out of six races and fi nishing second at the NCAA Nati onal Champion- ship with a ti me of 29:08 in the 10K event. The redshirt junior from Nairobi, Kenya was named the 2008 Big South Runner of the Year, and also took home three Big South Runner of the Week honors.
