YESTERDAY: The Captains tallied 15 hits, but lost to the Lansing Lugnuts, 9-4, to split a four-game series at Cooley Law School . Lake County led 2-0 after the first inning, but Hagen Danner hit solo homers in back-to-back innings in the third and fourth Midwest League • Second Half to tie the game. Lake County took a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but the Lugnuts scored seven unanswered runs. Griffin Conine’s two-run homer against starter Zach Draper evened the score again in the fifth and the Lugnuts scored three against Eastern Division W L GB reliever Kyle Marman in the sixth to grab the lead. Rafael Lantigua’s RBI single put Lansing on top and a two-run single by Otto Lopez added to the lead. Lansing tacked on two more runs in the eighth against Luis Araujo.

Six different Captains tallied multiple hits last night, led by Daniel Schneemann, who had three singles in four trips to the plate. Bo Naylor went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored. LAST TIME OUT: Oviedo faced the Whitecaps on Sunday at Classic Park and dominated over the first five innings. He retired the first 12 West Michigan hitters before walking Ulrich Bojarski to begin the fifth. Oviedo kept his no-hitter going until Parker Meadows hit a two-out RBI single later that inning. Oviedo came back out for the sixth and only recorded one out. He exited after loading the bases and walking Bojarski to force in a run that tied the game at 2-2. Luis Araujo came in from the bullpen and gave up a grand slam to the first man he faced, Zach Malis, to put West Michigan in front, 6-2. Oviedo was charged with five runs on three hits over 5.1 innings. The Captains, however, came back to win when Miguel Jerez and Jonathan Engelmann hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the ninth to tie and win the game in walk-off fashion.

PROSPECTING: Oviedo ranks as the Indians’ #8 prospect, according to MLB.com. He was unranked at the start of last season.

2018: Across nine starts with Mahon ing Valley last season, Oviedo posted a career-best marks in ERA (1.88), K% (32.5), BB% (5.3), K-BB% (27.1), batting average against (.192), WHIP (0.92), FIP (2.40) and xFIP (2.17). He finished the season with two starts for Lake County, in which he allowed three runs on five hits over nine innings. He struck out six and walked seven.

SCRAPPERS RECORD: Oviedo set a new Scrappers single-game record on June 28 at West Virginia. In just his third start in the New York-Penn League, Oviedo struck out 12 Black Bears over six innings. He also struck out six batters in a row from the second to the fourth.

MANAGER: Luke Carlin – 2nd season in Lake County Luke Carlin, 38, returns for his second season as the Captains’ Manager, becoming the first skipper since Ted Kubiak (2010-11) to lead Lake County for multiple seasons. Carlin, the 13th field manager in team history, as the fourth manager to pilot Lake County for more than one campaign. Prior to his first year with the Captains, Carlin was the manager of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, the Indians’ Short-Season affiliate. Before Mahoning Valley, Carlin began his coaching career as the hitting coach for the Double-A Akron RubberDucks in 2016. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the 2002 Amateur Draft. Carlin made his Major League debut with the San Diego Padres in 2008 and played for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009. The catcher joined the Cleveland Indians in 2010 and played in 10 Major League games with the Tribe from 2010 to 2012. Carlin was also part of back-to-back Triple-A National Championship teams with the Columbus Clippers under the direction of Indians’ current Third Base Coach Mike Sarbaugh. In his playing career, Carlin played for three men who are current Major League managers: Rick Renteria (Chicago White Sox), Bud Black (Colorado Rockies) and A.J. Hinch (Houston Astros).

PITCHING COACH: Owen Dew – 1st season in Lake County Owen Dew, 30, returns to the Captains as the team’s pitching coach just eight years after he pitched for Lake County himself. Dew pitched for the Captains in 2010 and 2011, and was part of the team’s lone championship squad in 2011. He was the pitching coach for the Arizona League Indians last year and for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in 2017. Dew’s Scrappers staff finished second in the New York-Penn League with a 2.92 ERA.

HITTING COACH: Jason Esposito – 1st Season in Lake County Jason Esposito, 28, begins his second year in the professional coaching ranks after serving as the hitting coach for the Arizona League Indians last year. As a player, Esposito was drafted in the second round in 2011 by the Baltimore Orioles after attending Vanderbilt University. He spent four seasons as a third baseman in the Orioles’ organization, reaching as high as Double-A Bowie.

BENCH COACH: Jordan Smith – 1st Season in Lake County Jordan Smith, 28, is a former Captain who is returning to Lake County this year as the team’s bench coach. Smith played for the Captains in the 2012 season. He hit .316 with nine home runs and 74 runs batted in for a team that included Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez. Captains fans gave Smith the nickname, “The Milkman,” due to his love for the nutrient-rich drink. Smith played eight professional seasons, including seven in the Indians’ organization. He reached as high as Triple-A Columbus.
