Thank you to our Silver Sponsor Thank you to our Bronze Sponsor 2 19 Directors Notes "This above all: to thine own self be true,/And it must follow, as the night the day,/Thou canst not then be false to any man" (Hamlet Act 1, scene 33, 78-81). When I set out to direct this production, I often revisited this quote which book-writer, Heather Hach, so wisely placed in this show's final number. Having grown up with a highly motivated blonde sister of my own, I was familiar with the MGM film and, as a frequent show-tune listener, the musical itself. I took it upon myself to forget everything I knew about Reese Witherspoon, Laura Bell Bundy (Elle Woods, Original Broadway Cast), and pink as a fashion statement. As I scoured the script for a deeper, more im- plicit meaning than Hoku's "It's a Perfect Day,” I learned that this is not merely a story about a girl who chases her love interest to Harvard Law and learns some life lessons along the way; it is a story about defining one's self. The quest to find what defines one's self is far from bubbly and ditzy; it is an endeavor that authors and poets like Wil- liam Shakespeare have been writing about for centuries. Furthermore, I cannot think of a more appropriate age group than young adults to mount a production about finding one's place in the world. I charged this production's lead with stepping beyond the limits of an air-headed debutante with an uncanny knack for law and, instead, search- ing for the true seriousness that defines Elle Woods. Although the actors are not speaking in iambic pentameter, the basic set was some- what inspired by the open, yet intimate Globe Theatre in London, where the works of William Shakespeare continue to be performed. Also unique to this production is its staging in a three-quarter thrust (audience on three sides) as opposed to the traditional proscenium-style theatre, in which certain technical elements of this show could have been more easily achieved. However, it is my hope that by sacrificing a massive per- formance space, complete with fly system and the works, for a more personal and inti- mate performance, the audience will ultimately have a more rewarding experience.
