The original production of A CLOSER WALK WITH PATSY CLINE was presented by the Arts Club Theatre Company (Vancouver, BC, Canada) in September 1991. The videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. There will be a ten minute intermission during this show. Approximate run time: 105 minutes. Patsy Cline. One of the all-time legends of country music, Patsy Cline was born Virginia Patterson Hensley in the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, Virginia, on September 8, 1932. Always spunky and devoted to music, she quit school at the age of fifteen to work in a drug store and help support her single mother and younger brother and sister. In return, her mother dedicated her spare time to helping Patsy’s career, and drove her to Nashville when she was only sixteen for her first Grand Ole Opry try-out. Patsy was never shy about self-promotion and impressed everyone the moment they heard her. Ironically, her music talent was never really rewarded until “Walkin’ After Midnight”, which was recorded ten years after she began singing professionally. Her incredible rendition of this song on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts in 1957 not only won the contest, but finally set her on the road to the acclaim she deserved. It was followed three years later by the memorable “I Fall to Pieces”. Then came “Crazy” (written by Willie Nelson), “She’s Got You”, “Leavin’ on Your Mind”, “Sweet Dreams” and “Faded Love”. Her last single release was “A Closer Walk with Thee”. She realized her lifetime ambition of joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1960 and won ten awards at the WSM Country Music Festival. In the early 1960’s Patsy’s life began settling down – just as her career began to pick up. Two children, a dream home, and a stack of hit records were finally hers, but she would not be able to enjoy them long. Patsy Cline died in an airplane crash on March 5, 1963 while hurrying back to her family after a benefit concert in Kansas City. Patsy’s popularity is witnessed by the fact that she is the number one juke box play in the world. Her Greatest Hits album has been in first place for over 200 weeks on Billboard’s Top Country Catalogue Albums. On March 1, 1995, Patsy was memorialized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Although she will never be replaced,A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline is a tribute to her spirit and a celebration of the music of her life. Red Rock Diner premiered in Canada at the Arts Club Theatre Company (Vancouver, B.C.) and in the U.S. at Hallmark Theatre (Kansas City, MO);Forever Swing, the popular big band musical that enjoyed a 12 week sold out premiere in Vancouver, B. C. and then played to sold out houses over the course of two national tours; The Black and Gold Revue, Hotel Porter (Cole Porter Revue) and Clooney Tunes all received rave reviews as well. Acclaimed as one of Canada’s top entertainers, Dean Regan is a multitalented artist whose credits include acting, singing, composing and producing as well as writing, directing and choreographing shows for major theatres across the continent. Dancing became the dominant focus of his life, from his early years in high school to a highly successful musical comedy career in Hollywood, Las Vegas, and New York. Recently inducted into the B.C. Entertainers Hall of Fame, Dean continues to write and direct. Charlie Dick (Production Advisor) was a linotype operator for the Winchester, Virginia Evening Star when he met and married Patsy Cline on September 15, 1957. During a stint in the army, he and Patsy returned to Winchester for the birth of their daughter Julie. The family then moved to Nashville where he joined the Nashville Banner and later The Tennessean. Their son Randy was born in January, 1961, shortly before a car crash critically injured Patsy. While still in the hospital, Patsy’s “I Fall to Pieces” hit number one. Her injuries required the use of crutches long after her release from the hospital. Charlie became her road manager, tending to her and the kids. After Patsy’s death, Charlie went into record promotion and hit the big time with sales of Red Sovine’s “Teddy Bear”. In 1983, he became co- owner of Hallway Productions: Nashville, a video production company that made country music documentaries on such stars as Patsy Cline, Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn, George Jones and Willie Nelson. With Julie and Randy, he formed Legacy, Inc. to respond to Patsy’s increasing popularity. Legacy, Inc. has approved this production as one of only two stage musicals celebrating the life and music of Pasty Cline. Charlie passed away in 2015. He is buried alongside Patsy Cline at Shenandoah Memorial Park in Winchester, Virginia. • GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

OUTLOOK PLAYERS COACHES OPPONENTS REVIEW RECORDS HISTORY MEDIA THE HISTORY OF SMU FOOTBALL 1910s On the morning of Sept. 14, 1915, coach Ray Morrison held his first practice, thus marking the birth of the SMU football program. Morrison came to the school in June of 1915 when he became the coach of the University’s football, basketball, baseball and track teams, as well as an instructor of mathematics. A former All-Southern quarterback at Vanderbilt, Morrison immediately installed the passing game at SMU. A local sportswriter nicknamed the team “the Parsons” because the squad was composed primarily of theology students. SMU was a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which ruled that neither graduate nor transfer students were eligible to play. Therefore, the first SMU team consisted entirely of freshmen. The Mustangs played their first game Oct. 10, 1915, dropping a 43-0 decision to TCU in Fort Worth. SMU bounced back in its next game, its first at home, to defeat Hendrix College, 13-2. Morrison came to be known as “the father of the forward pass” because of his use of the passing game on first and second downs instead of as a last resort. • During the 1915 season, the Mustangs posted a record of 2-5 and scored just three touchdowns while giving up 131 Ownby Stadium was built in 1926 points. • A Biography of Doc Watson by Dan Miller Edited by Steve Carr
A Biography of Doc Watson by Dan Miller Edited by Steve Carr Introduction Over the past fifty years the guitar has had a very powerful influence on American music. Predominantly a rhythm instrument at the turn of the century, the guitar began to step out of the rhythm section in the 1930’s and 40’s and has maintained a dominant presence in every form of music from rock, to folk, to country, bluegrass, blues, and old- time. While Elvis, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and other pop icons of the 50’s and 60’s certainly played a large role in bolstering the guitar’s popularity, the man who has had the deepest, most enduring, and most profound influence on the way the acoustic flat top guitar is played as a lead instrument in folk, old-time, and bluegrass music today is Arthel "Doc" Watson. To those of us who have spent hundreds of hours slowing down Doc Watson records in order to learn the tastefully selected notes that he plays and emulate the clear, crisp tone he pulls out of his instrument, Doc is a legend. However, Doc’s influence extends far beyond the small niche of guitar players who try to faithfully reproduce his guitar breaks because Doc Watson is not just a guitar player and singer - he is an American hero. To be recognized as a "national treasure" by President Jimmy Carter, honored with the National Medal of the Arts by President Bill Clinton, and given an honorary doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina calls for being more than a fine musician and entertainer.
