Following from York's administrative re-organization in January, 1983, and from the work of the President's Taik Force on Student Services and Non-Faculty Colleges, the position has been established at the Vice-Presidential level to provide for concentrated attention to the nature and quality of York's student services and Co'l1ege system. The Provost will hold the senior responsibility for the administration of the York Colleges and the University's Student Service Departments, as well as for matters of non-academic dispute adjudication and student discipline. Helshe will report to the President and will have reportinq to him/her the Assistant Vice-President (Student Relations), and other officers with responsibilities bearing on student services. Annng the first and most important of the Provost's duties will be the initiation of a thorough effort to define the objectives and most effective organization of Yorkrs various student and community services, along with ways in which resources might be marshalled behind those objectives. As an integral part of this effort, the Provost will assist tie York Colleges in addressing their academic missions and facilitating their full participation in the academic conmunity. The Provost will be a full-time member of the York University Faculty, with strong academic and administrative experience, and a record of sensitivity to both the academic and non-academic needs and concerns of York's students. The Provost will in all likelihood retain some academic duties. The term of office is to be initially five years, subject to renewal by mutual agreement. lt is hoped that an appointment can be made with effect from January l, 1984.

Nicholls (Physics s CRESS), Professor J. 0'Nei1l (Sociology), Professor H.0. Pritchard (Chemistry and CRESS), and Professor B. Rowland (English). The Faculty of Graduate Studies is now calling for nominations for this Professor- ship to be awarded in 1984 Spring Convocation. Any fulltime faculty member can nominate under the criteria established by the Senate and published in this week's Gazette (Volume 14, lssue J). It would be expected that a Distinguished Research Professorship would be awarded for life and would evolve into a Distinguished Research Professorship Emeritus upon retirement. Continued involvement in the intellectual life of the University following retirement would be encouraged. Eleven Rhodes Scholarships will be awarded to Canadian students again this fall. Each scholarship is worth approximately 7,500 pounds per annum, and entitles the winners to study at 0xford University in England for two (and possibly three) years commencing in September l!84. Canadians, preferably in their third or fourth year of university work, who are unmarried and between 18-24 years of age are eligible. Selection is made by provincial committees after personal interviews and on the balis of the candidate's record for scholastic ability, character, leadership qualities and interest in outdoor sports. Robert Perin, professor of history at Atkinson College, has been appointed Director of the Canadian Academic Centre in ltaly (CACI). CACI, headquartered in Rome, provides a focus for Canadian Studies in I taly. Teams from 48 high schools across 0ntario will compete in six skill-testing and problem-solving events at Yorkrs sixth annual Science 0lympics, hosted by the Faculty of Science, on the York campus Saturday, October 2!.
