 The College: at a Glance

Dhupguri Girls’ College was established in the year 2013 after an engaging initiative by the local enthusiastic people, who are interested to spread education among women in the Duars region. The College initially started in a temporary establishment near Dhupguri High School (Sadasana Chatrabas) before shifting to the present premise at College Para, Ward No.1, near , in the south-eastern fringes of the town. The College campus stands tall; overlooking sprawling and serene greenery spread over 6 acres of land. It is a Government aided Degree College, affiliated to the University of North Bengal.

तमसो मा 煍योततर् गमय (Lead us from Darkness to Light). Let the light of knowledge give us more power to usher in a new dawn of hope and aspirations for the women in the Doars’ region.

 Scope and Mission of the College

As the College is situated in a challenging Rurban belt of North Bengal, socially and economically backward; but rich in cultural diversity and indigenous languages, we are committed to develop the institution as a site of empowerment of the local women, who can carry forward the cause of education in its highest and widest sense, enriching and transforming ways of their living. Apart from the conventional courses, the College authorities are also interested to introduce community based and vocational courses, especially for women in the coming future so that they can be equipped with skill based training to further their need for sustainable livelihoods. The College has initiated the NSS unit for the girls from the academic session (2017-18) to encourage democratic modes of living and sustain selfless service to the neighbouring communities.  College Canteen

A new college canteen has been constructed inside the college premises under the scheme of North Bengal Development Department (NBDD) to provide hygienic and quality foods for all the students and the staff members of the college.

 Administration

The College administration is temporarily run by the Organizing Committee, consisting of local members and leaders, apart from the teacher administrators of the College. The members of the committee are as follows:

 Courses Offered

At present, the College offers B.A Honours courses like Bengali, History, Geography (New Honours), English (New Honours), Political science (New Honours) and general courses in English, Bengali, History, Geography, Political Science, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Education (New) and Sociology (New). The Geography Department of the College has a well furnished laboratory as well as a manually programmed weather station where the girls have a unique opportunity to learn hands-on-experience on the subject. The college offers modern classroom (Smart class room) facilities with digital interactive sessions.  Academic Curriculum:

The College will offer two courses of study B.A (Hons.) “Program” & B.A “Program” in the disciplines mentioned under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) by University of North Bengal from the academic session (2018-19). Each course shall be of six semesters duration, where the student will have to study Discipline Specific Core Courses (basics in the discipline), Foundation Courses, Generic Elective Courses (to offer students explore disciplines of interest beyond the Core choice), Discipline Specific Elective Courses (Elective courses offered in the subject of choice) and Skill Enhancement Courses as prescribed by the University Board of Studies. At the time of admission a Honours Program/Program student will have to choose the courses she will undertake to earn her required credits. Once chosen, the student will not be able to change her choices, unless she foregoes the course and make a fresh choice under the Hons. Program/Program Course.

 Course Structure:

The HONOURS PROGRAM course shall be designed as having 140 credits delivered in six (06) semesters with 1950 marks. The PROGRAM course shall be designed as having 120 credits delivered in six (06) semesters with 1800 marks. Each Course shall be of 75 marks each except that AECC 1(ENVS) will be of 100 Marks and AECC 2 (English/MIL Communication) will be of 50 marks. At the time of admission, a student will identify an Honours Program (total 140 Credits) / Program Course (total 120 Credits) in which he / she / transgender shall concentrate. Apart from the Discipline specific Core Course he / she / transgender will have to select Generic Elective courses. She / transgender will also have to select Discipline Specific Elective courses, Ability Enhancement Core Courses and Skill Enhancement Courses from the provided pool of choices.

 OUTLINES OF CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM: 1. Discipline specific Core Course (DSC) The course designed for papers under this category aim to cover the basics that a student is expected to imbibe in that particular discipline. A course, which should compulsorily be studied by a candidate as a core requirement is termed as a Core course.

2. Elective Course: Generally a course which can be chosen from a pool of courses and which may be very specific or specialized or advanced or supportive to the discipline/ subject of study or which provides an extended scope or which enables an exposure to some other discipline/subject/domain or nurtures the candidate’s proficiency/skill is called an Elective Course.

2.1 Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Course: An Elective course offered under the main discipline/subject of study is referred to as Discipline Specific Elective.

2.2 Generic Elective (GE) Course: An Elective course chosen from an unrelated discipline/subject, with an intention to seek exposure beyond discipline/s of choice is called a Generic Elective. The purpose of this category of this courses is to offer the students the option to explore disciplines of interest beyond the choices they make in Core and Discipline Specific Elective courses.

3. Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC): The Ability Enhancement (AE) Courses may be of two kinds: Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC).

3.1 Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC): These courses are based upon the content that leads knowledge enhancement,(1)Environmental Science and (2) English/MILCommunication.

3.2 Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC): These courses may be chosen from a pool of courses designed to provide value-based and/or skill-based knowledge and should contain both theory and laboratory/hands on training/field work. The prime purpose of these courses is to provide students life-skills in hands-on mode so as to increase their employability.

4. Practical/Tutorials (One each with every discipline specific core and discipline/generic specific Elective course): Practical means Laboratory or field exercises in which the student has to do experiments or other practical work of two hour duration. Tutorial means special instructions based on the Lectures.
