January 14, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Kevin Zwick, University of Pittsburgh News 412-624-0148 (office); [email protected] Pitt Unveils Plans for “Victory Heights” Initiative to Support Student-Athletes and Marching Band PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh today unveiled plans for its Victory Heights initiative, a series of state-of-the-art athletics projects that will provide Pitt student- athletes with national-caliber competition, training and sports performance and medicine facilities. The initiative is part of the University’s campus master plan, which was finished last year after two years of engagement and input from faculty, students and staff, along with community members. The plan is designed to advance Pitt’s aspirations on many fronts, enrich the student experience and create a more connected, outward-looking and engaged university. The roadmap to realizing this ambitious vision was announced by Chancellor Patrick Gallagher and Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. New facilities to be built in the coming years include: • A 3,500-seat arena for gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling. Each of those teams currently practice and compete in the 70-year-old Fitzgerald Field House. • An eight-lane, 300-meter indoor track for the men’s and women’s programs as well as a band facility. The Panthers’ track and field teams have been without a suitable campus home since the razing of Pitt Stadium in 1999. Additionally, the more than 300-member Pitt Band will utilize this venue for rehearsal, storage and meeting needs. • A cutting-edge athletic performance center that will serve the strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition and mental well-being needs for 16 of Pitt’s 19 intercollegiate athletics programs. “Victory Heights is about coming together as a community and doing our part to drive comprehensive excellence,” Gallagher said. “And it’s about taking the steps needed to give each of our student-athletes the very best environment to learn, grow and reach their highest potential.” “For far too long, a significant percentage of our student-athletes have been forced to compete in facilities that do not reflect the lofty standards and aspirations of the University of Pittsburgh,” Lyke said. “Today’s announcement is the first step in transforming that liability into a game-changing asset in our quest for comprehensive excellence. “Victory Heights will provide our student-athletes and coaches with the necessary resources to train, recruit, compete and achieve at the highest levels,” continued Lyke. “We could not complete this vision without the extraordinary support and leadership from Chancellor Gallagher, our Board of Trustees and many loyal Pitt donors. On behalf of our Department of Athletics, I want to express my deepest gratitude to them for their commitment to this plan and belief in our championship vision for each of Pitt’s 19 intercollegiate athletic programs.” ### .

Currently, athletic facilities expenditures are experiencing a second nationwide spending spree that began around the turn of the century. This study considers the types of athletic facilities, motivations for those facilities, and financial models used to pay for those facilities at the University of Georgia. When did the offseason begin in the Steel City? It wasn't when Jags' kicker Josh Scobee booted the winning field goal through the uprights. It wasn't when David Garrad scampered 32 yards on a QB draw on fourth and two. It was when, while holding a one-point lead with minutes remaining, Steelers' offensive coordinator Bruce Arians chose to run the ball three straight times (including an idiotically ill-conceived draw on third down) instead of going for the kill. In past years — hell, just a few months ago — one of the surest bets in football was that Pittsburgh's defense could hold a late lead. Not these days. Especially after that embarrassing debacle in the Meadowlands against the Jets. So in the end, Steelers Nation is left with the rancid taste of pansy play-calling in our mouths. As the P-6 tries to swallow that down without upchucking our herbal tea, we begin the countdown: 107 days until the NFL draft, April 26-27. That said, speaking as a football fan, not just a fan of one particular team, the P-6 is looking forward to the divisional round. And that Steelers-Jags game, even though our team came out on the losing end, was an instant classic. What a game. And as we said last week, how can you not root for a team like Jacksonville? As the saying goes, they don't have Pro Bowl players.

Goal 3 Survey Responses
Plan for Pitt 2025 Goal 3: Strengthen Communities What should Pitt try to achieve in the next five years to advance this goal? Allowing the voices of all to be heard and educating students on the importance of protest and civic involvement in making changes. I'm not sure how to do this, but I would love to see more student involvement at sporting events. Since Heinz is considering withdrawing sponsorship of Heinz Field, maybe Pitt should consider rebuilding Pitt Stadium to make football games more accessible. More engagement that actually means something. A lot of events are either boring or just try to look good without actually being of any help. A global perspective would also include cutting tuition costs. For example, NYU medical school recently became tuition-free and the impact of this will undoubtedly mean the best candidates will want to go there. A community is built upon its members and if Pitt wants to strengthen its community, maybe making it more attractive to the top candidates should be a focus. Emphasize importance of community engagement as part of personal and professional development; expand upon experiential service activities for students to augment learning experience and build sense of community. Pay your damn taxes. Gee, why is Port Authority always so strapped for cash? Could it be that Pitt and UPMC pay no tax despite being the largest employers in the city? Pitt has excellent study abroad programs, however, perhaps more virtual guest lectures as well as better advertising of existing guest speakers on campus could improve student interest in this area.
