Cleanroom production

In general, cleanrooms tend to be used in microsystem produc- tion. At first sight a cleanroom looks much like a biology lab. Concentrations of air-borne contaminants in spaces like these are kept to an absolute minimum – a must, given that even the tiniest particle in the ambient air can cause a wide range of production problems and impair product quality.

The air in the 600 square metre cleanroom at ContiTech Techno Chemie, based in the German town of Karben, is kept clear in part by a double airlock system with one channel for materials and another for people. The 15,000 cubic metres of air volume found inside the room is permanently under high pressure to keep stray particles at bay. Ambient temperatures are a cons- tant 21 degrees, and 30 ventilators in the ceiling of the room keep air moving around at 7 metres per second.

Five extractors in each corner of the room cleanse the space by filtering out particles with a seven-stage system. Assem- bly workers operating in the room also have to wear special clothing, including head and shoe coverings that keep the air as clean as possible.

It is in these special cleanroom conditions that ContiTech also produces hose lines for the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
