The Mallard Issue 322 August 2018 All the fun at the Hall hank you to everyone who supported our Ceilidh in the Village Hall, on the T 23rd June. As you can see a good time was had by all and over £600 was raised for the village hall refurbishment fund. Thank you to all the organisers, the BBQ chefs and, of course, the fabulous ‘Hobblers’. Sandy Francis

Bowls and Tennis Members Change Sport! On Sunday, 8th July the Bowls & Tennis Clubs’ got together for a fun, sociable morning to try out each others’ sports. The weather was good too. After last year’s success it was decided it should be an annual event and there was a good turn-out from both clubs. Kyle Edmund may well have a rival in the form of Barry Hardingham and Gerald Jeffrey, seen here on court and Sandy Francis showed a natural flair for line and length when it came to bowling. This is an ‘unbiased’ view! Thanks to Peter Wadham & Annie Lawton for organising this friendly get-together and with the help of a barbecue lunch, it went on well into the afternoon. Let’s hope for the same again next year. Ali Ward 1

Mallard News Gert & Daisy...... Well, int that hot? My mate Gert has swanned off ter Minorca agin but took Bert with her this toime. Afore she went she left notes fer me ter wroite this but I moight hev ter add sum or change bits cos she ownt know til she reads it. We hed a luvly holiday at the Castell Playa Hotel in Arenal, Minorca. There’s stuff ter do there and trips ter go on but as we’ve bin there so ofen we’ve dun it awl. We just lie by the pool only gitting up ter go ter meals. A week of not having ter think abowt cook- ing, cleaning or washing – heaven! This year we hed Chrissie Warnes and her four friends there. We kept hearing them ask the young waiters fer sex on the beach – we dint know they wus loike that – but that turned owt to be a drink (another one!). Daisy practised her Spanish and ended up with three cold chocolate drinks! Our friend Derek Drewery has had a nasty operation on his lug and we wish him a very speedy recovery. We went ter Ladies Night up the Hall and played bowls agen the men. Think Malcolm Hipkin thort he wus playing at Potters. He wud tell us we wus lying three then throw his ball and then we wus losing by one – we dint understand that! Peggy wus playing agen Bert and she hed the same trouble but with different coloured balls. We lost the game but dun OK due ter heving Victorious Vic on our team. We hed a gud larf but don’t think we wus supposed to. We don’t think we’ll play regular but did put our names down as re- serves. We thort our young footballers dun ever so well at the World Cup. They behaved them- selves agin them Columbians who shud hev hed a clip round the lug. We wish Gareth Southgate hed worn a knitted cardi cos we cud hev made a fortune with our knitting skills. Thas really hot today. As I (Daisy) am writing this, the sweat is dripping off me and the midges are heving a feast. Thas allers noice weather here when Gert goes away. By the toime yew read this Ray will hev hed his retirement party so yew moight see a report somewhere in The Mallard. When we wus in Minorca Daisy got a message on her phone to say she hed won £25 on West Norfolk Wins. In case yew don’t know, that is a sort of Lottery thing for West Nor- folk and yew pay £1 a week fer a chance ter win £25,000. The best part is that 60p of the £1 goes ter a good cause in West Norfolk. Great Massingham Village Hall is one of the good causes so yew can help the hall and maybe have a win loike Daisy did! Don’t forget the Village Yard Sale on 19th August. There will goat burgers and sausages at Daisy’s so pop in and try them. Dew yew keep atroshing. Keep cool – drink water! Daisy without the Gert Still no Norfolk words – not seen Keith yet! Quote of the month: A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though they know that you are slightly cracked. NEXT MOBILE LIBRARY VISITS GRASSROOTS MALAWI From 11am, as timetabled. Next ‘Stalls on the Green’, from 9am on th 28th August and 25th September Saturday 4 August (cancelled if wet) Hope to see you all there. Jenny Borley.

Biodiversity Project News The Project’s Open Gardens Day on 1st July was attended by over 70 people who spent a sun-filled Sunday afternoon looking around the gardens at Nos. 4 & 6 Kennels Farm, enjoying tea and cake, and buying greetings cards, plants, bric- a-brac and raffle tickets. The takings exceeded all expectations and amounted to a magnificent £645. This considerable sum will go towards paying for further improvements to the Project’s site over the coming year such as new plants for the pond and replacement bird feeders and nest boxes. We would like to thank all those who helped on the day, baked cakes, donated plants, cards and hard cash or simply came along in support. Special thanks are due to Mr & Mrs Ken Clarke who opened their garden at No.4 Kennels Farm for the first time and to Mr and Mrs John Moreton who donated the raffle prize (a generous voucher to spend at the Heath Farm shop). There was favourable comment on the colourful show of cornfield annuals on the meadow at the Biodiversity Site and on the much-enlarged pond which, at the time of writing is, sadly, almost empty thanks to the summer drought. If you are interested in seeing and hearing more of the conservation work at the Site and perhaps helping with its future development please come to our next working party on Saturday 11th August, starting at 10 am. A warm welcome awaits along with tea, coffee and biscuits at our mid-morning break. Mike Jackson 8

West Norfolk Wins Our Village Hall Performance Update The Village Hall Charity becoming one of the beneficiaries of the West Norfolk Wins Lottery is proving a great success. Currently, we have 32 supporters in the Village buying 57 tickets per month. This might sound quite modest but, over a year, it equates to £1,482 additional funding for the Village Hall refurbishment. So, a big thank you to those of you participating in the draw each week. West Norfolk Wins differs from other lotteries in that fifty percent of your stake goes to the cause you are support- ing and a further ten percent will go to other good causes in the area. The other big differ- ence is your chance of winning is one in fifty compared to 1 in 55,000 in the National Lot- tery! We have had four modest wins already from amongst our supporters.

If you would like to join those already supporting our cause please go on-line at www.westnorfolkwins.co.uk and sign up. Your contribution will make a tremendous differ- ence to our efforts to refurbish the Hall and, who knows, you might just be lucky. If you need some help with the process of going on-line and becoming part of the draw, please contact Max Pratt on 01458 520127 or Sandy Francis on 01485 521787 and they will be pleased to help you get signed up. Thank you in anticipation of your support. 9

Mallard News Outdoor Gym Refurbished – Please make the most of it. Its hard to believe but, its seven years since the Outdoor Gym was installed. In that time, the elements and wear and tear have taken their toll of the equipment. Bearings had become worn and the powder-coated finish on some of the machines had cracked to allow in water and, subsequently, rust. To save the facility for the village, the Trustees of the Village Hall have organised a refurbishment by Caloo, the original manufacturers and installers, to bring it back to as near its orig- inal state as possible. The Trustees have also set up a contract with Caloo to maintain the Gym on a regular basis to prevent Keith Skipper opens the equipment deteriorating and to maximise its useful life. gym in 2011 The Village worked hard for the Gym & the subsequent maintenance costs mean that it does need to be used to maximise its value. So, don’t be shy, with the light summer mornings and evenings why not come down to the Jubilee Field and have a workout. See details below of regular classes commencing on 30th July. The purpose is to help you to use the gym in a more structured way. Daisy Achieves Her Black Belt Daisy Linney who lives in Little Massingham Daisy recently achieved her Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Daisy attended our village Primary school and now attends Litcham High. Many congrat- ulations, Daisy. We are all very proud of you. Mum, Donna, recalls Daisy’s journey on the road to success…... It all started in 2013. Before moving to the area, Daisy had attended Karate classes but, on arrival in Norfolk, couldn’t find a suitable club to continue. As luck would have it, a parent at the primary school happened to hand out some flyers about Tae Kwon Do classes and Daisy and brother Jake decided to ‘give it a go’. They are both kicky, punchy sports with discipline, although Daisy and Jake will tell you Tae Kwon is much better! At first they were quite casual about training and would miss sessions and gradings but that all changed when they got to the higher belts. Training was now a minimum of two hours a week, plus extra at weekends and the last two weeks leading up to the Black Belt grading preparation dominated everything, with Daisy doing six sessions each week on top of school, pony and normal life! The grading took place at Sprowston Manor in Norwich, a fantastic location making it a very special day. Grand Master Freddie, who is a 10th Dan (A Dan is the ranking system for Black Belt) and trains the Federal Police in Germany, flew over from Germany and oversaw proceedings.
