Basketball Unit

Offense (You are trying to score on your opponent)  There is a 3 second time limit in the area.  5 positions- 2 guards, 2 forwards, and 1 center

Defense (You are trying to stop the opponent from scoring)  Two types of defense  Man-to-man – This is when you guard a person  Zone – This is when you guard an area  When on defense, there are not any time limits in the key area

Scoring  A is worth 1 .  A shot made behind the arch is worth 3 points.  A shot made from inside the 3-point line is worth 2 points.

Violations that result in a “loss of possession”

 3 Seconds in the key  - when you are not but your feet took more than one step  - when you begin to dribble after you have already picked up your first dribble  or palming the ball  Stepping out of bounds  Holding the ball for more than 5 seconds while inbounding  Intentionally kicking or punching the ball  10 second backcourt rule  Causing the ball to go out of bounds  Failure to observe free throw regulations

Types of Fouls

 Personal Fouls- A personal is illegal contact with an opponent like: pushing, tripping, holding, hacking, blocking, charging, etc.

 Technical Fouls- A is assessed for unsportsmanlike conduct, unnecessary roughness, delay of game, disrespectful attitude toward referee, using profane or inappropriate language or obscene gestures

The penalty for committing a foul usually results in a free throw(s) awarded to the person fouled.

Types of Shots

 Lay-up- when a player runs up next to the basket either on the right or left hand side  - Feet shoulder width apart, one hand shoot while one hand guides, bend knees, “Reach in the cookie jar”  Free throw- Behind the free throw line after a foul  3 point - Behind the arch

Regulation Game

 4 Quarters (lengths vary depending on the age level of the group)  Team with the most points wins  Full court

Basketball Terminology

 Drive- the act of an offensive player moving quickly to the basket with the ball in a scoring attempt

 Chest pass- Quick crisp pass used to get the ball to your teammate quickly

 Bounce pass- Efficient way to get the ball around defenders

 Overhead pass- Used to pass the ball further down the court

 Pivot- The act of turning on one foot (keeping the ball of the pivot foot in contact with the floor) and pushing/stepping with the other foot

 Swish- Shot that goes through the basket without touching the rim

 Air ball- Shot that completely misses both the rim and the net

Rules for Half Court Basketball

 The ball must be checked in at the top to one of the guards at all breaks in play (fouls, out of bounds, violations, , score)  Guard on defense checking the ball should make sure his teammates are in their spots and verify the score with the other team  If there is a jump ball call, it will be alternating possession. Therefore, if gold started the game with the ball, black will get possession on the first jump ball.  No free throws will be shot. The team that got fouled will take the ball out on top.  Players call their own fouls and violations  1 point will be awarded at the start of the game for each player not completely prepared. Whether a player is fully unprepared or half, it is still 1 point for the other team.  The ball must be brought back past the free throw line on any changed possession, including an “air ball”, , or blocked shot.  If a player is fouled in the act of shooting and makes the basket, his team is awarded the point and the other team gets the ball. If he misses, his team keeps the ball.

 The free throw line is 15 feet from the .  A girl’s basketball is 9 inches in diameter and 28.5 inches in circumference.  A boy’s basketball is 9.5 inches in diameter and 30 inches in circumference.  The basket on the court is 18 inches in diameter, 56.5 inches in circumference, and 10 feet from the floor.
