The Merewether team of the last decade rightfully sits with the Hamilton teams of the 1950’s and 60’s and the Belmont and Charlestown teams of the 1980’s and 90’s as the most successful in the history of Newcastle cricket. It is a credit to the clubs strong on-field and off-field leadership.

Merewether Final Winner

The SCG Cup final between Merewether and Hamilton- Wickham was one the best games of cricket I have seen at any level with the result in the balance to the final over. The game was a tremendous showcase of the talent we have within Newcastle cricket and with strong crowd support was a fitting tribute in what was probably the last season of the SCG Cup – a competition dominated by Newcastle clubs in its history.

Rhys Hanlon Hamilton At a representative level, Newcastle started the season well with a solid victory in the State Challenge against the Sydney one day champions Northern Districts. Joseph Price was named player of the match with a strong all round performance. The Newcastle team then dominated the Northern pool of the NSW Country championships in Ballina setting up a match against Western Zone in the final. Unfortunately this match was washed out and rescheduled to be played later in the season. In the replayed fixture Western Zone were far too good and crowned deserved winners of the NSW Country trophy. The Ewin-Tenant Shield match against Illawarra was also interrupted by rain with Newcastle in a strong position with over 300 runs on the board when the match was abandoned. In the under-aged competitions, the highlight was success in the Under 17 age group. This result augers well for the future of Newcastle cricket and congratulations to the players, coaches and management of the Under 17 team that won their State Championships in Raymond Terrace. The Colts team had a similar result to the senior team finishing second to Central North Zone in the State Championships. The combined results of all teams in all NSW Country male competitions meant that Newcastle won the first ever NSW Country Club Championship – known as the Hogg Silver Shield. The Newcastle Steel entered their second season of the SCA T20 competition full of confidence following a promising first season. The campaign started well with a good win over Gordon, but close losses to St George and Easts and a poor game against University of NSW ended the Steels season on a disappointing note. There is no doubt Newcastle has the talent to succeed at this level but more consistency is needed. Thank you to all the coaches and managers who assisted with the representative program in what was a long and diverse season. Special thanks to bus driver and scorer Paul Wenta who was present for every Senior and Colts representative match. Off the field, the employment of Ivan Spyrdz as Newcastle inaugural Executive Office was a landmark appointment. Full time administration brings cricket into line with all other sports in the region and will be the catalyst for the unification of the various Newcastle cricket associations. One administration body will provide cricket in Newcastle with the platform for structured management and consistent growth. Cricket NSW showed further confidence in Newcastle cricket by scheduling the first Sheffield Shield match in Newcastle for many seasons. The match was well supported and the players appreciated the playing conditions provided by the curation staff at No. 1 Sports Ground. We thank CNSW for its continued support and investment in Newcastle cricket. Thank you to the major sponsors of the NDCA whose support is appreciated – CBA, Kingsgrove Sports, Kookaburra, and the DeCourcy Club. The NDCA is also appreciative of the extensive media coverage given to cricket and thanks the following media outlets – Newcastle Herald, NBN TV, ABC Radio The Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Post and BarTV. Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted during the season and to members of the NDCA Management Committee for their time, effort and support. In particular, thank you to Peter Kembrey and his committee who were responsible for the reforms relating to the player Code of Conduct and the judiciary process. This process in now simplified and transparent and was given a positive endorsement by players and umpires. Also, congratulations to the NDCUA who have worked hard to attract new umpires to the game and have been able to stand umpires deep into the lower grade competitions – something appreciated by all lower grade players. Thank you also to my hard working NDCA colleagues – Deputy Chairman Jeremy Tombleson, Grade Administrator Alan Nichols, Financial Controller Paul Robertson, Tim Caimakamis, Aaron Gray, Peter Kembrey and Secretary Royce McCormack who shoulders the day to running of association matters. In conclusion, Newcastle cricket clubs need to be continually mindful of the future structure of its competitions. Management of the competitions treads a line between ensuring growth in participation in cricket and providing competitive cricket for the top players. The trend in lop-sided results in recent seasons would suggest that the pendulum has swung towards participation and less consideration to the competiveness of the top grade. Looking forward to another successful season in 2015-16 P. H. (Paul) Marjoribanks (Chairman – NDCA)

The Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association (NDCUA) continued to appoint as many umpires as possible to Saturday Grade fixtures and the Sunday competitions. An increase in numbers this past season has seen third grade with regular umpires appointed. An offseason campaign again will hopefully see increased persons on field for the coming season.

Cricket New South Wales (CNSW) and Country Cricket New South Wales (CCNSW) are also thanked for their support of Newcastle cricket.

Newcastle City Council and Lake Macquarie City Council are also thanked for providing many grounds that are available to allow competitions to proceed as smoothly as possible throughout the season.

The Committee discussed many issues during the season including the rules of competition, grounds issues, T20 Sundays, registration of players the overall representative program.

My personal thanks are extended to all members of management and members of sub-committees who give up their time freely to assist in the running of the various competitions held. Grade/Association Secretaries are also thanked for giving up their time voluntarily to assist their respective clubs and the NDCA as a whole.

R. D. (Royce) McCormack – Secretary NDCA OBITUARIES John W. Hartigan (1932-2015) a Life member of the Hamilton-Wickham DCC, a committee member 1964-1969, President of the club from 1969-2008 (39 years) and committee member again from 2008-2015.

John was also a Vice-President of the Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) from 1978-1986, member of the Judiciary committee and a long term delegate from the Hamilton-Wickham club to the NDCA at its then held monthly meetings and also an NDCA Delegate to the monthly meetings of the Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association (NDCUA). He was elected a Life member of the Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) for his services to cricket in 2003.

Lance E. C. Manning (1932-2015) passed away on Saturday 6 June 2015. He joined the Newcastle District Cricket Umpires Association (NDCUA) after playing grade cricket with the Wallsend club and stood in his first game in season 1962/63, which would continue until his retirement from on field umpiring in December 2013 at Wallsend No 1 Oval where he was given a guard of honour as he left the field for the final time.

During his fifty (50) years as a grade umpire he never missed a single season standing on field. He held various roles within the NDCUA including vice president, a member of the selection and examination committee and from 1990-91 till 1992-93 was President of the umpires association chairing the monthly meeting where all umpires meet together each month for training and administration matters.

In season 1967/68 Lance umpired Northern NSW V India at No. 1 Sportsground and in the same season stood in the NDCA First Grade Final. He was elected to Life membership of the NDCUA in 1988 and also honoured by the Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) with the Warren Tennant contribution to the game award in May 2011.

A mentor and "sounding board" to many up and coming umpires and just a good all round "nice bloke", Lance's contribution to Newcastle cricket is acknowledged with sincere gratitude.

Wes Nichols (1978-2015) passed away in February 2015 after a short battle with cancer. Wes was a member of the Waratah-Mayfield DCC club from 2000 to 2006, representing Newcastle during the 2001/2002 season. Wes served three terms as Treasurer of the Waratah-Mayfield club, and was an NDCA delegate for several seasons. Wes moved to the United Kingdom in 2006, and went on to become Secretary and Captain of the Windsor Cricket Club. Wes was a popular and highly regarded member of the Waratah-Mayfield club who will be sadly missed. Phil Hughes (1988 – 2014) GAME DEVELOPMENT REPORT

Executive Summary

Cricket NSW Game Development continues to invest strongly in the future of the game by delivering programs in schools and the community to inspire the next generation of fans and players. The 2014/15 season strategy focused on sustainability, with an increased focus on club pathway programs. To support this strategy, Game Development invested in 21 full-time Development Managers and 4 Development Leaders strategically placed in Hubs (Newcastle, ACT, Sydney Harbour and GWS).

Principles to Evolve Game Development

1. Controlling First Impressions – the first experience that a child has in cricket is critical to their ongoing involvement in the game. CNSW will deliver the programs for the 5-10 age groups with volunteers taking over above this point. 2. From Sampling to Sustainability – whilst maintaining our impressive school participation numbers it is critical we move focus to players and environments. 3. Bridging the gap between paid and unpaid administrators – being more connected to and influencing the club system. 4. From tracksuits to business suits – shifting the role of the regional cricket manager towards acting as a ‘CEO’ for cricket in their region. 5. A Sport for All – Introducing new markets (female/multicultural/social cricket) to the game. 6. Face of the game – Game Development staff to be recognised by internal and external stakeholders as the key cricket contacts in their region (especially with government).

Cricket Participation 2014-15

Participation across the state rose 12.89% in the season 2014/15 to 354,955. As outlined in Figure 1, this growth can be attributed to a sharp rise in the number of children participating in Cricket NSW managed school programs to support the transition to club cricket. Key insights include:-

 Increased accuracy in data collection methods for this reporting year.  Growth in the schools segment was in the programs Cricket NSW has direct influence over (T20 Blast School Cup events, MILO in2CRICKET Skills and School Ambassador programs).  Club growth was attributed to the increased uptake of MyCricket in regional centres, leading to increased accuracy and improved data collection methods. Impact of Participation Programs in the Hunter Region

The Hunter Region encompasses cricket associations and clubs in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. Participation rose 26.9% in the season 2014/15 to 26,353. As outlined in Figure 2, this was achieved through an increased delivery Cricket NSW managed programs to support the transition to club cricket.

Key insights include:-

 Significant growth across the schools segment reflects the continued investment Cricket NSW is making to support the transition from the schools to clubs.  Teachers registering as School Ambassadors increased cricket sessions in the schoolyard.  T20 Blast School Cups were boosted by the inclusion of a number of intra-school events.  A Private Provider program was initiated to increase the field-force and professional delivery.  Growth in Indoor Cricket was attributed to accuracy in data collection methods and the evolving space of on-site cricket delivery for schools.

 The Toyota Country Blitz featuring NSW Blues players Sean Abbott and Pat Pisel visiting Singleton, Cessnock, Maitland and Newcastle meeting sponsors, school students, cricket volunteers and the media.  Cricket World Cup promotions conducted before and after Christmas and involved activations for school students and the local community in Newcastle, Cessnock and Singleton.  4,600 Primary School (years 3-6) and High School (year 7-8) Students took part in MILO T20 Blast School Cup events across the Hunter.  Singleton JCA established the first T20 Blast Centre in the region and achieved an immediate 25% growth in participation.  100% compliance has been achieved in the use of MyCricket to administer competitions.  A MyCricket administration seminar had the highest attendance of any run across the state.  More than 70 volunteers participated in Level One Coaching Courses.  A Winter Development Squad 8-week pilot program was conducted for junior players at Charlestown Indoor Sports.  Activations around the Sheffield Shield match between NSW and Western Australia included a coach seminar with Trevor Bayliss and ‘Henry’ Lawson, more than 300 kids attending a coaching clinic featuring Blues players and 150 students participating in T20 Blast games during lunchtime On Ground Entertainment on the Friday.

During March and April, a Cricket Australia facility pilot program involving detailed site auditing of infrastructure at 253 Hunter cricket grounds was undertaken. Detail collected included the number and quality of pitches, practice nets, change rooms and spectator facilities including photos. The audit tested i-pad data collection and program compatibility with a report presented to the CA Board. As one of the first regions audited, the Hunter will have up-to-date facility data captured for use in grant applications and representations to local government.

Closing Remarks

As well as introducing children to cricket, the CNSW Game Development Department is evolving its programs to provide five clear outcomes:

 Articulate a clear participation next step (to junior club cricket)  Build a database of contacts to continue the engagement process  Create fans by connecting participants with the BBL sides  Provide media opportunities to change the perceptions of cricket  Raise revenue for reinvestment in the game

This blueprint will ensure more players, fans and more support for our cricketing community.

Volunteers continue to be the driving force behind associations and clubs across the Hunter contributing hundreds of hours through the summer and winter to complete tasks that often go unnoticed and without acknowledgement. On behalf of Cricket NSW I wish to extend my appreciation to all who volunteered their time during the season to make cricket happen in the Hunter Region.

In conclusion, thank you to everyone who supported our development initiatives during 2014-15 and I’m looking forward to supporting associations to grow Cricket in their region in the future.

NSW NEWCASTLE ZONE ACADEMY REPORT

The NSW Academy program has been running in its current format for the past two (2) years. The goal of the program is to develop cricketer’s skills, knowledge and fitness to enable them to represent NSW in firstly under age competitions and ultimately in the NSW men’s first XI, Sydney Sixes or Thunder sides. The 2014-15 season was also the first season Cricket Australia had allowed a new team (ACT / NSW Country) into the Under 17 and U19 national carnival. This would be picked from origin, allowing Sydney based players that originally come from the country to play for ACT/NSW Country, meaning the NSW Metro squad was only city based. This was different from previous seasons where ACT would invite players from NSW Country to play for the ACT in these carnivals. The coaching staff comprised of the following structure:

 Head Coach and Bowling Coach– Mark Cameron  Head Batting Coach – Patrick Darwin  Fielding and Keeping Coach – Shane Burley  Regional / Assistant Coach – Neil McDonald  Assistant Coach – Mark Curry

The 2014-15 squad was selected using the Newcastle Zone Junior selection committee and the age range selected was U15 to U19 with sixteen (16) players from eight (8) different clubs accepting the selection. The squad was quite strong, especially in the fast and spin bowling departments. The 2014- 15 season was a pre-season based program that incorporated nineteen (19) sessions that ranged from strength and conditioning sessions, skills and drill based sessions, net sessions and game scenario sessions. The program was divided into three major cycles: 1. Basic Skills and Strength and Conditioning, This involved:

a. Basic technical drills and advice was provided to the squad. The focus was on building a repeatable technique that would be called up on under pressure b. Basic Cardiovascular fitness and an introduction to preventative rehabilitation (pre- hab) exercises designed to improve mobility and stability in key joints in the body in an attempt to reduce injury risk.

2. General Preparation and transition of skills, this involved:

a. A continuation of the basic skills outlined above, albeit under pressure and net based sessions, where the focus was on applying the techniques developed in the first cycle b. Slightly more specific strength and conditioning. Interval based running was used as well as an increase in the strength program to include position specific exercises

3. Specific prep and competition based skills, this included: a. Competition based net sessions, where the focus was the battle between bat and ball, technical advice was still provided where required, however, the focus was mindset and game planning b. Game Situations. Games would be played in an undercover area where, the batting side would be given a target with a specific set of rules as dictated by the coaches. These rules provided the ability to control which skills would be required to win the games. These games were very competitive in nature and allowed the coaching staff to see what happens to the players under pressure and enable accelerated learning from mistakes. c. The strength and conditioning phase was minimised at this stage, however, pre-hab and short interval based running sessions were conducted as a part of the skills sessions.

The program was successful in the fact we had three (Griffin Lea and Peter McCredie – U17’s, Ben Balcomb – U19’s) players representing ACT / NSW Country and the U17’s Squad winning the U17 Country Carnival, as lead by Neil McDonald. This was particularly pleasing given our success in the Kookaburra cup in the previous season. Also of note was the selection of four academy players (Ben Balcomb, Bayley McGill, Jayden Park, Courtney Moulton) into the Newcastle Men’s Representative squad and ultimately the side that played against Sydney first grade sides and in the NSW Country Carnival. This is important as it gives young players with the desire and ability to play for NSW a chance to be seen by Sydney Grade clubs and possibly NSW Selectors. Of a less pleasing note was the behaviour of some of the Newcastle U19’s players, who unfortunately did not put the best interests of Newcastle and NSW Cricket first. It should be noted that Cricket NSW and therefore the NSW Academy did not view this situation very lightly and there was action taken to those involved. It should also be noted, the need for the Newcastle Zone to continue to review its priority in regards to development of training facilities in Newcastle. For the Newcastle Zone to improve its development of NSW and Test Cricketers, first class facilities are required. In summary, the 2014-15 NSW Academy program was successful due to the number of players representing ACT / NSW Country in various age groups, selection of players in Newcastle Men’s representative teams and success in the U17’s Country Competition. Yours sincerely,

M A (Mark) Cameron

NSW Academy Coach - Newcastle

REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET 2014 -2015

After putting in a strong pre-season under Coach Mark Cameron the season kicked off with two trial games against ACT at Ron Hill Oval. This was a productive pre-season hit out with a 50 over game on the Saturday and a T20 game on the Sunday. State Challenge vs Northern Districts As winners of last year’s country final Newcastle took on the winners of the previous year’s Sydney one day competition, Northern Districts on 21st September at Mark Taylor Oval. This game saw some young talent make their senior Newcastle debuts in Ben Balcomb, Bayley McGill and Jayden Park. Newcastle bowled well to bowl out NDs for 191 off 47 overs with 3 to Bayley McGill and 2 to each of Mark Littlewood, Joey Price and Jayden Park. Newcastle chased the total 7 down in the 39th over with contributions from Joey Price 46 and Jeff Goninan 36 not out.

SCA Kingsgrove Sports T20 cup After a solid debut the previous year Newcastle kicked off it’s 2014/15 T20 campaign with a double header at Hurstville Oval on the 12th of October under the leadership of Captain Mark Littlewood and player coach Mark Cameron. The first game was against Gordon and Newcastle restricted them to 8/155 off their 20 overs after Gordon had won the toss and batted, with Sam Webber leading the bowling with 2/13 off 4 overs. In a tight run chase Newcastle prevailed with 3 balls to spare the main contributors being Sam Webber 46 off 26 balls (3x4s/3x6s) and a very calm and controlled innings from Mark Littlewood with 29 off 24 to guide the team home. Game 2 of the double header was against eventual completion winners St George. St George won the toss and sent Newcastle in and followed up with a tidy bowling display to put Newcastle under early pressure. Some powerful late innings hitting from Jeff Goninan with 42 of 23 with 5x6s got Newcastle to 8/146 off 20 overs. Newcastle fought hard but St George eventually passed the total with 1 over left and 4 wickets down. Nick Foster bowled well with 3/21 off his 4 overs. The following weekend saw the team travel to Sydney for another double header with the first game against a strong Eastern Suburbs team at Waverly Oval. The Dolphins won the toss and elected to bat with the strong opening combination of international’s Nick Maddison and Peter Nevill. With a very short boundary on one side, Newcastle bowled well to keep the Dolphins line up to 4/147 off 20 overs. In reply Newcastle kicked off the innings with a strong 87 run opening partnership between Mark Dries 46 off 40 and Greg Hunt 39 off 41, but when they fell some tight bowling saw Newcastle fall 6 runs short of the total.

Joe Price Man of the Match and Representative Player of the season with Chairman Paul Marjoribanks

A change of venue to the Village Green for the 2nd game of the double header was required to take on University of NSW featuring ex Merewether bowler Dan Morton in the last round game. On a flat wicket UNSW cashed in on winning the toss and compiled a strong total of 3/179 off 20 overs. Newcastle chased hard needing a big win to ensure it had a quotient to get it through to the next round and a partnership between Joey Price 41 off 24 and Mark Littlewood 47 off 36 kept Newcastle in the game but unfortunately the team fell 28 runs short in the end. McDonalds Country Championships – Ballina For the second year in a row the Northern division of the championship was held in the North Coast town of Ballina. Newcastle kicked off their campaign on 21st of November against Central Coast at Fripp Oval with leg spinner Courtney Moulten making his debut. A good team bowling display saw the wickets shared amongst 7 bowlers as Central Coast was bowled out in the 47th over for 146. Newcastle made light work of the total chasing down in 34 overs 4 wickets down to gain a bonus point. Greg Hunt lead the way with 50 and Mark Littlewood saw the side get home with 33 not out. Game 2 of the championship saw Newcastle take on Central North, in an excellent follow up bowling display Newcastle ran through the Central North line up dismissing them for 126 in only 29 overs. Jeff Goninan unleashed for a rapid 70 not out that saw Newcastle pass the total in only 19 overs to secure a double bonus point win. Game 3 was against the home side North Coastal who won the toss and decide to bat, Newcastle’s inform bowling attack again made short work of the opposition knocking them over in the 39th over for 191. Leading the bowlers were Ray Cooper taking 4 for 31, Josh Geary 3 for 28 and Joey Price 3 for 47. Jeff Goninan was again the aggressor in the run chase and led the way with 105 not out and was well supported by Mark Littlewood’s 48 as they put on 122 in partnership as Newcastle chased the total down in 33 overs for another bonus point victory and secure a berth in the final. Country Final Newcastle travelled to Orange on the 22nd of Feb to play Western in the rescheduled final of the Country Championships. The game saw the debuts of bowlers Bryan Warren and Tim Prescott who were rewarded for strong seasons for their respective clubs. Newcastle won the toss and batted and compiled a very competitive total of 274 off its 50 overs. The highlight of this innings was a brilliant 131 by Joey Price as he put on 151 with Mark Littlewood 52. On a very good batting wicket the Western openers batted superbly to put on a 190 run opening partnership, Newcastle showed great character to fight back but Western eventually passed the total 4 wickets down to be deserved winners.

UNDER 19 COUNTRY CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS

The championships were played at Coffs Harbour on the North Coast a lovely place for cricket our first game saw Newcastle have a comfortable win over Riverina with the bowling being shared around with Bryan Warren taking 3 for our batting was led by Josh Forsyth with a stylish 59 no. our second match resulted in another comfortable win over North Coast we batted first scoring a respectable 6 for 208 led by Sam Davies with 82 and Jordi Van Kemenade with a handy 36 we than took the field with our bowlers again dominating the afternoon Courtney Moulton with 3 for 42 and Bryan Warren with 2 for 27. The result of this match saw us in the final against Central Northern a tight match in which we were just pipped. The final with Central North was a very tight match - Central North scored the winning runs in the 49th over. We again batted first with all batsmen chipping in Bailey McGill 50, Jordi Van Kemenade 44, Bryan Warren 37 (not just a bowler) and Josh Forsyth 26, unfortunately our bowlers toiled hard we were little unlucky and Central Northern managed to get the runs 7 down, Sam Davies 3 for 25 and Courtney Moulton 2 for 30 were our best.

It was a good tournament for Newcastle however we just fell short at the last hurdle.

UNDER 17 NORTHERN CARNIVAL Executive Summary

The NSW U17 Country carnival was hosted by Central North Zone at King Park Raymond Terrace from 31 October to 2 November 2015. The Newcastle team played some outstanding cricket to remain undefeated in its three matches to win the carnival for the first time in twenty years.

The Newcastle team included:- Harry Macansh (Captain)(NC), Jonty Dicks (CB), Liam Dwyer (HW), Quinn Fowler (NC), Logan Johnson (CB), Griffin Lea (TW), Peter McCredie (TW), Jake Radford (BE), Jason Sangha (WA), Andrew Somerville (TW), Jordy Toby (HW), Ryan Van Kemenade (NC).

The win was very much a team effort with all players contributing to the result. Harry Macansh provided astute leadership and he was backed up by some outstanding efforts in the field. Special thanks to Assistant Coach Greg Hunt and support coaches Mark Cameron and Mark Curry for their pre-carnival and match-day expertise while the organizational skills of Manager Aaron Gray ensured the players were organized and focused on their task.

Match Reviews

Newcastle posted a solid total in the first game against North Coastal with Jake Radford, Macansh and opener Logan Johnson the main contributors. Newcastle’s pace bowlers then took charge with accurate stump-to-stump deliveries on a wearing pitch to roll North Coastal for 145. Newcastle’s next opponent was neighbouring Central Coast. Once again Newcastle called successfully and batted with more batsmen stepping up. Half centuries to Jordy Toby and Peter McCredie set the tone for a large total at the end of their 50 overs. Newcastle’s pace bowlers backed up their efforts of the previous day to destroy the Central Coast innings, eventually winning by 94 runs.

In the round 3 match, Central North batted first with Newcastle needing a win to claim the U17 title. The Central North boys were in trouble throughout their innings with the pace of Fowler and leg-spin of McCredie backed up by enthusiastic fielding. Newcastle found themselves in early trouble (3/20) chasing the 128 required but lost only one further wicket in reaching the total.

Match Results

Round 1 - Newcastle 7-196 (Radford 58, Macansh 34, Johnson 30) def. North Coastal 145 (Van Kemenade 3/6, Somerville 3/22, and Fowler 2/46) by 51 runs. Round 2 – Newcastle 7-256 (Toby 59, McCredie 51, Dwyer 42*, Sangha 28) def. Central Coast 162 (Dwyer 3/18, Van Kemenade 3/18, Fowler 2/29) by 94 runs. Round 3 – Newcastle 4-129 (Johnson 75*, Dwyer 28*) def. Central North 128 (P. McCredie 4-26, Fowler 3/25) by 6 wickets.

Opener Logan Johnson led the batting with 120 at 60.0 while Ryan Van Kemenade’s medium-pacers claimed 7 wickets at 5.8. Jonty Dicks returned from winter knee surgery to claim 10 victims behind the stumps (7 Ct, 3 St) in an impressive display. Four (4) players were selected for the NSW State Challenge matches including Griffin Lea, Peter McCredie, Logan Johnson and Andrew Somerville. Griffin Lea and Peter McCredie were subsequently selected for the combined NSW Country-ACT team that participated in the National U17 Championship in Hobart. Thank you to Newcastle Zone for its support and congratulations to the team on their achievements.

Executive Summary

The NSW Country Cricket Association U16 Bradman Cup carnival was hosted for the second year by Central North in two pools played in Maitland and Singleton from 9-12 January 2015. Newcastle was drawn in a pool with Southern Zone, Central North and Western playing in Singleton. Heavy rain affected the carnival with the first two rounds being played on synthetic pitches. The weather eventually cleared allowing round three to be played on turf.

The Newcastle squad included:- Jason Sangha (WA) Captain, Adam Buchmasser (TW), Joe Hart (TW), Luke Hitchcock (TW), Griffin Lea (TW), Peter McCredie (TW), Zac McGuigan (Me), Thomas McKendry (Me), Sam O’Sullivan (NC), Ben Roberts (TW), Andrew Somerville (TW), Jordy Toby (HW).

The experienced Lyle McGuigan and Jed Dickson joined me for the carnival while Greg Hunt assisted with pre-carnival training sessions. All three played their part in ensuring the team was well-prepared and ready-to-play on match day. Special thanks to Zone Academy Coach Mark Cameron for his work with individual players in the Cricket NSW Academy program and assisting with team selection. My appreciation to Jason McKendry for his efforts in arranging clothing, transport and general support for the team. Match Reviews

The carnival followed a similar pattern to the previous season with Newcastle winning their first match against Western Zone. Chasing Western’s 192, Jason Sangha and Jordy Toby played very well to steer the team home by 4 wickets. Round 2 saw several fielding errors allow Southern Zone to post 190. Newcastle was in control of the run-chase only to have batsmen give their wicket away at vital times in a poor display to lose by 58 runs. Ben Roberts and Luke Hitchcock played lone hands as wickets fell around them. Newcastle returned to the winners circle with an emphatic routing of Central North in round 3 in the only game played on turf during the week. An incredible match proving that if batsmen are willing to be patient and play to the conditions, a competitive score can be posted. Newcastle won the toss and batted on a difficult pitch. A very slow outfield owing to the rain restricted the Newcastle total to 82 from 50 overs. Skipper Jason Sangha played a patient knock while wicket-keeper Adam Buchmasser top-scored with 24 and Griffin Lea added 19. Central North lost two early wickets then collapsed under some sustained fast bowling from Lea and Somerville backed up by O’Sullivan and McGuigan to lose 6 wickets for 7 runs. The final two wickets added 5 and the innings ended at 20 after only 16 overs. The below-par performance against Southern Zone cost Newcastle dearly finishing 2nd in the pool and missing out on playing in the Final by 2 points. On reflection, playing on synthetic pitches in the first two rounds neutralized any advantage Newcastle’s pace bowling presented to the other teams.

Match Results

Round 1 - Newcastle 6-195 (Sangha 85, Toby 40) def. Western 9-192 (Lea 3/26, McKendry 2/27, McGuigan 2/29) by 4 wickets. Round 2 – Southern 190 (Somerville 2/28) def. Newcastle 132 (Roberts 35, Hitchcock 32) by 58 runs. Round 3 – Newcastle 82 (Buchmasser 24) def. Central North 20 (Lea 3/9, O’Sullivan 2/4, Somerville 2/6) by 62 runs. Five (5) players were selected for the NSW State Challenge matches including Griffin Lea, Peter McCredie, Andrew Somerville, Adam Buchmasser and Jason Sangha.

KOOKABURRA CUP

Newcastle’s defence of last season’s maiden success in the Kookaburra Cup was always going to be challenging. The squad had a good pre-season via The Hunter Academy & were well prepared leading into their first of 3 round games against Central Northern @ Ron Hill Oval. The team Captain was Callan Fowler & Vice-Captain was Luke Muddle. Game 1 match results: Loss to Central Northern (toss won by central northern)

Central Northern elected to bat & reached a total of 6/162 from their 50 overs. Central Northern had an opening partnership of 50, which set up a solid start for them, but after grabbing a few wickets with our later bowling changes we managed to keep them to a reasonable total.

For Newcastle, Callan Fowler took 2/20 from 7 overs, Liam Bench 1/17 from 7 (2 maidens), Glenn Winsor 1/20 from 7 overs (1 maiden) & Sam Winpenny 1/29 from 8 overs (2maidens). Newcastle reached 9/158 from their 50 overs. For Newcastle Josh Claridge made 56, Liam Whitehead 22, Matt Brodie 17, Ahmed Badat 15 & Luke Muddle 12 no.

After good starts from our top 4, it was only Josh Claridge that went on with his start. We were lacking just one more solid batting partnership from our batting group to turn this result.

Game 2 match result: Win over North Coastal: (toss won by north coastal)

This was by far our best performance & the frustration being it was against the team that went on to win the Kookaburra Cup.

North Coastal elected to bat & reached 9/149 from their 50 overs. North Coastal got off to a solid start posting 46 for the opening stand before our spinners took charge & built a lot of pressure over a tight 20 over spell, this managed to keep their total well within reach. For Newcastle, Callan Fowler took 4/16 from 10 overs (3 maidens), Toby Gray 2/25 from 10 overs (1 maiden) & Aiden Galvin 1/20 from 7 overs. Liam Whitehead had a direct hit run out of their leading batsman Jack Cooper that was pivotal to the result & Michael Richardson snared 2 quality stumpings. Newcastle reached 4/150 from 38.4 overs for a resounding victory.

For Newcastle Josh Claridge scored 104 not out, Ahmed Badat 13 & Luke Muddle 10. Josh’s innings was one of the finest innings I’ve seen for many years, with his only chance coming when he was in the 80’s & he dominated the North Coastal bowling to all corners of the ground, it was a delight to watch.

Game 3 match result: Loss to Southern: (toss won by Newcastle)

At this stage of the carnival we were back on top of ladder on run rate & thought that a strong win may see us make the final. Unfortunately, a bizarre result in the Central Northern vs North Coastal match, where North Coastal dismissed Central Northern for 42, put this opportunity out of reach. We batted first & were all out for 148 off 49.3 overs.

We made a lot of promising starts in this innings but just did not go on with our partnerships. For Newcastle Ahmed Badat scored 31, Josh Claridge 27, Luke Muddle 17, Liam Whitehead 16, Matt Brodie 11 & Michael Richardson 10.

Southern reach our total being 6/149 off 48.5 overs. For Newcastle Aidan Galvin took 3/20 off 9 overs (2 maidens), Noah James 1/10 off 2 overs, Luke Muddle 1/23 off 10 overs (3 maidens) & Callan Fowler 1/25 off 6 overs.

Joshua Claridge was our leading run scorer with 187 runs @ 97.50 & also was the leading run scorer over the carnival from all teams. Callan Fowler was our leading wicket taker with 7 wickets for 61 @ 8.71 & finished third on the wickets taken table.

We just came up short unfortunately, but we are also well aware of the areas we need to put the work into.

Under 14 State Challenge @Dubbo.

A combined side from Newcastle / Central Coast called “The New Coast Stingrays” was selected after round 3 & they got the opportunity to play in the under 14 state challenge at Dubbo.

The team was coached by Central Coast’s Mark Danckert & managed by Newcastle’s Yusuf Badat.

Newcastle had 7 players selected for this side. Callan Fowler (co-captain), Ahmed Badat, Joshua Claridge, Luke Muddle, Michael Richardson, Liam Whitehead & Glenn Winsor.

The team had 2 wins & 2 losses. The two victories came in matches captained by Callan.

Once again Joshua Claridge was a standout for the New Coast Stingrays leading the run scoring total for the Stingrays & finish in the top 3 overall. Josh had the distinction of being selected in the under 14 state merit side which was a huge achievement.

Thank you to Bill Bannon as assistant coach & Paul Gray as manager.

FIRST GRADE YEAR IN REVIEW The Herald’s Josh Leeson

The 2014-15 season was the summer that Merewether truly joined the echelons of the greatest ever sides in Newcastle district cricket history. Their 210-run victory over Stockton-Raymond Terrace was their fourth straight two-day premiership.

Not since Hamilton won six consecutive premierships in the 1950s has a Newcastle club been so dominant. The result never appeared in doubt when Pat Darwen (127) and Simon Moore (72) posted a 200-run second-wicket partnership. Darwen’s performance, his second century in two-day finals, earned him the inaugural Ken Clifford Medal. A blistering 98 not out off 88 balls from Hamish Bartlett further crushed the young Stockton bowling attack, as Merewether posted 7-380.

In reply Stockton reached 170, in a disappointing end to the feel-good story of the summer.

After collecting the wooden spoon the previous season, the Seagulls responded to finish fourth and then upset minor premiers University in the semi-finals.

Merewether’s two-day dominance followed a dramatic SCG Country Cup victory over Hamilton-Wickham, which allowed the Lions to draw level with their arch rivals on five titles. In arguably the SCG Country Cup’s greatest finale, Hamwicks fell for 235 in reply to Merewether’s 7-245. Hamwicks appeared poised for an unlikely victory before Lions paceman Mark Cameron skittled the tail. Sam Jenkinson - Stockton

However, Merewether’s dominance was disrupted in the Tom Locker Cup 50-over and Twenty20 competitions. Hamwicks won a controversial Tom Locker Cup final that was marred by rain. Merewether were 2-106 from 26.2 overs with Sam Gilmour (53 not out) and Pat Darwen (25 not out) at the crease when play at No.1 Sportsground was halted for almost four hours due to storms. When play finally resumed Hamwicks were set 101 off 25 overs, which they chased successfully four wickets down. Rain did not provide any excuse in the T20 decider where University avenged their previous loss to Merewether. Uni made 6-149 and then restricted Merewether to 130. The Lions were awarded an extra 12 runs for a slow over rate, but still Uni emerged victorious by seven runs.

On the individual front, Hamwicks all- rounder Mark Dries was the Newcastle Herald cricketer of the year for 540 runs at 41.54 and 30 wickets at 13.07.

Dries also won the Dickinson Shield for the best first-grade batting average. Luke Bird – University

Merewether quick Mark Cameron claimed a third consecutive Heath Trophy for his bowling record of 49 wickets at 7.80. Charlestown Captain Dane Macourt and Stockton Raymond Terraces James Thomas took out the wicket-keeping award.

Appreciation to NDCA Chairman Paul Marjoribanks and Secretary Royce McCormack for assistance and co-operation throughout the season.

TOM LOCKER CUP

MEREWETHER all-rounder Sam Gilmour believes the Duckworth-Lewis method should be adopted in Newcastle district cricket after rain left Hamilton-Wickham with an easy chase to win the Tom Locker Cup final on Sunday.

Hamwicks were set 101 off 25 overs and won by six wickets.

Merewether were 2-106 from 26.2 overs with Gilmour (53 not out) and Pat Darwen (25not out) at the crease when play at No.1 Sportsground was halted for almost four hours due to storms.

‘‘We placed ourselves in a strong position and then the rain came, but you can’t do much about the weather,’’ Gilmour said.

‘‘It’s tough being in that position and then just giving them what they had to chase.’’

Under the Duckworth-Lewis method, Hamwicks would have been required to chase 174 from 25 overs, and Gilmour said that was a fairer system.

‘‘You can’t have that kind of finish to a competition. Something needs to happen,’’ he said. ‘‘Duckworth-Lewis is a proven formula in international cricket. They said it was too difficult to work out, but Brad Bannister downloaded an app within three minutes and came up with a total straight away.’’

Newcastle District Cricket Association chairman Paul Marjoribanks said his board would investigate adopting the Duckworth-Lewis method for next season.

‘‘Not to take anything away from Hamwicks’ win, but we definitely need to look at it for next season,’’ Marjoribanks said.

It was obvious from Hamwicks’ post-match celebration that the victory carried some hollowness.

‘‘It’s disappointing for them after being set for two batsmen and not being able to bat again,’’ Hamwicks skipper Josh Trappel said.

‘‘I can see the disappointment, but a win is still a win.

‘‘We still had to go out against a quality bowling attack and get the runs.’’

When play resumed at 4.20pm, Hamwicks lost Shane Hughes (9) when he was bowled by Gilmour (2- 18) at 1-12.

Opener Ben Balcomb (33) set about stabilising the run chase.

When Gilmour trapped Balcomb lbw with four overs remaining at 4-82, Merewether had a faint hope of an unlikely victory.

However, Mark Dries (15 not out off 15 balls) and Sam Webber (11 not out off eight) restored the run rate to canter to victory with 14 deliveries to spare.

NDCA T20 COMPETITION

The success of the NDCA First Grade T20 Competition continued in season 2014/2015, with many clubs reporting great support for the T20 day concept together with the mid-week match, a concept that could be expanded next season. Outstanding individual performances in the preliminary rounds included Wests James King notching a century (124 no) against Waratah-Mayfield, Merewether’s Troy Goodwin 95 no against Cardiff-Boolaroo and Hamilton-Wickham’s Sam Webber scoring 95 against Charlestown, Jacob Short was sensational taking 6 for 11 off 4 overs against Newcastle City. This year saw a final only with form team of the Competition University taking the honours over Merewether, Uni made 6-149 with Matthew Gawthrop making 52 and then restricted Merewether to 130 Michael Radnidge taking 3 for 30. The Lions were awarded an extra 12 runs for a slow over rate, but still Uni emerged victorious by seven runs.

The second grade competition was a race between three clubs for the minor premiership, with Charlestown DCC eventually winning the tight battle for top honours. It’s no surprise that the top three were also featured heavily in the club championship final rankings also. First placed Charlestown DCC (84) finished in 3rd position in club championship, second placed Merewether DCC (82) rewarded for a strong season across all grades finished 1st in the club championship and third placed Toronto Workers DC (79) performing strongly in all lower grade competitions finished 4th in club championship. The season had many interesting matches, which included 15 outright results, several of these saw the outright result won after a first innings loss. Congratulations go to Merewether DCC for taking out the final in a close battle with Charlestown. In a low scoring affair at Kahibah Oval, Merewether were able to defend a modest 135. Charlestown fell just 19 runs short. The competition in general was well balanced, with plenty of ex-first grade players blended throughout each team. When the statistics were finalised at the end of season it was the experience that shone through, the top 5:

This season’s Third Grade competition was a close competition with the top 3 positions not decided until the final game of the season with Toronto managing a bonus point win to give them the Minor Premiership. The other 3 semi-finalists were all beaten in the last round, Charlestown’s effort to of a double bonus point win in the final round saw them just miss out to Wallsend for 4th spot.

Without a doubt the outstanding bowling performance of the season was in this grade with Cardiff-Boolaroo bowler returning the outstanding figures of 10 for 20 off 12.4 overs in the 1st innings of Rd 17 against University.

In a rain affected semi-final series Toronto chased down the small total set be Wallsend (5/72 v 71) whilst Belmont had a similar win over Merewether 4/77 v 76)

The final at Ron Hill oval was arguably the closest match of all the finals played which each side both struggling at one stage and then managing a recovery the end result was a hard fought win by Belmont in a match that was played in good spirit both teams can be proud of their efforts.

The Fourth Grade competition this season was divided into 3 power teams Cardiff, Newcastle City and Toronto with another group that were competitive but not able to match it with the top 3 and then a group who were clearly outclassed it is a pity that there are some of the very young players who are not ready to compete with the mature older players and clubs should consider their future before that throws these younger players to the wolves.

The two highest individual scores for the season were recorded in this Grade 228 no by Craig Slavek from Belmont and 187 by Angus Norton from University.

David Moore from Charlestown had the astonishing figures of 8/1 against Hamilton-Wickham in the last round of the season

That being said there was some closely fought tussles in the past season, with the Minor Premiership and finals qualification only determined on completion of the final round of the competition and it was a pity to see a number of ground unavailability’s for this round. The Fourth Grade Final was a one sided affair with Cardiff-Boolaroo totally dominating Newcastle City again, with former 1st Graders Matt Hancock and Peter Willis the standout players.

If you are looking for evidence to support this you need no more that to look at the outstanding performances in this grade there are truly some astounding batting and bowling performances, I hope the competition next season is a little closer in future seasons. FOURTH GRADE LADDER

The Denis Broad OAM Cup competition again proved popular, with all clubs reporting significant interest amongst players in the competition. Merewether were the dominant side in Pool A with 3 wins whilst the Pool B winner was decided on Net Run Rate between Newcastle City, University and Wallsend. Merewether defeated Newcastle City in a high quality match played at No 1 Sportsground. Merewether batted well to pose a challenging target of 5 for 158 with Samuel Logan smashing 3 fours and 6 sixes in an entertaining 77, Sam O’Sullivan 2/19 was the pick of the bowlers. Newcastle City battled hard for 129 off their 20 overs with Brad Priest and Adrian Mannel both reaching 30 whilst young Tom McKendry 3/25 was the best with the ball for. DENIS BROAD OAM CUP LADDER

UNDER 15 T20 COMPETITION

The inception of the mid-week T20 saw this competition played at No 1 Sports Ground as the curtain raiser for the First Grade during January this should have been a huge success during the school holidays, however this competition showed up some of the poor relationships that exist between the Junior and Grade Clubs with too many forfeits – this competition has now been running for a number of years and the clubs need to be better organised and communicate prior to the week before a match.

The standard of cricket in the competition was quite high when the teams actually got to play, with a number of players relishing the opportunity to play on First Grade grounds (often with an enthusiastic crowd). A number of players registered significant individual performances, with Adam Winchester averaging 172 with a high Score of 63 not out for Charlestown and Jake Berwick from Toronto taking a hat trick preliminary round fixture. The final was a one sided affair with Toronto Workers accounting for the well performed Hamilton- Wickham., while Wests CC progressed to the final at the expense of Cardiff-Boolaroo.

This cricket continue to showcased some of the most talented young cricketers in the Newcastle area and needs to be supported better by some of the clubs

UNDER 21 COMPETITION

Some of the finest young cricketers in Newcastle were on display in the Under 21 Competition during the past season. A number of fine individual performances were recorded in the competition, however this season was the opposite to last and showed the depth of Newcastle bowling with Bryan Warren (Stockton) and Angus Young (Wallsend) each taking multiple large wicket hauls, Lachlan Maher (Cardiff) was the sole centurion this season.

Wallsend made up for their unexpected loss last season to win the Bert Atkin Shield in a one sided match final at No 1 Sportsground against Waratah-Mayfield. Wallsend batted first in good conditions scoring a very competitive 8 for 224 runs from their 50 overs. The 1st Grade experience of the Wallsend bowlers showed as they bowled Waratah out for 92 with Liam Taylor and Cameron Roxby each taking 3 wickets.
