The highest mountain in England, metersis located in this area, as well as many other well known fells such as SkiddawHelvellyn and the . These and the rest of the Lakeland fells were made famous by the late writer and fell walker, Alfred Wainwright. In his seven volume work, A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fellshe divides the mountains of the Lake District into different geographical areas, giving each its own individual book. These are listed below:. At first glance, these divisions see a little unusual. Why, for example, didn't he divide the Lakeland Fells into four areas like the Ordnance Survey did later on with their explorer maps? The reason for this is that he wanted to make the divisions in a way that would make sense to a fell walker. As he explains himself " So, for example, a fell walker on the range would not generally cross over the low pass of Dunmail Raise, which separates the Eastern Fells from the Central Fells, to somewhere like Steel Fell, in the same day. The map above shows the seven areas of the Lakeland Fells as defined by Alfred Wainwright. Click on any of the coloured Lakeland fells areas to display it's name. You can also zoom in and see details of individual fells within each of the areas. The Eastern Fells contain the Helvellyn and Fairfield range, the " And to the north is the wide Vale of Keswick with the Northern Fells beyond. This area then extends across to Ambleside's in the South West. The area also contains the Haweswater and Kentmere Valleys. The Central Fells are situated right in the heart of Lakeland, fully surrounded by the other geographical areas. Despite having the most centrally situated fell -arguably - these are not the highest mountains in the Lake District. Despite, this however, there are many spectacular fells which are very popular with walkers. Pavey Ark is another fell with dramatic scenery, and has one of the hardest routes attemptable by fell walkers - Jacks Rake a grade one scramble. The eastern boundary starts at the lowland area around Lake Windermere and Ambleside, travelling up through the Vale of Grasmere, Dunmail Raise, Thirlmere, all the way up to the Vale of Keswick in the north. Writing about the "Scafell-Bowfell massif" Wainwright notes that "within this area the fells are the highest, the roughest and the grandest in Lakeland: they are of volcanic origin and the naked rock is much in evidence in the form of towering crags and wildernesses of boulders and screes" ; and writing about the Coniston fells he says "Compact, distinctive, with several summits of uniform height just above 2,' the slaty Coniston fells bear many industrial scars which detract little from the general excellence of the scenery and, indeed, provide an added interest. The dry turfy ridges are a joy to tread" Wainwright ,The Southern Fells. The Northern Fells area is particularly independent from other high level regions of the Lake District. Writing about it, Wainwright states "Circular in plan, the area of the Northern Fells is completely severed from all other mountainous parts West and north these fells are bounded by the coastal plain of Cumberland and east by the valley of the Eden. Thus they rise in isolation as an independent and separate geographical unit" WainwrightNorthern Fells. Two of the best known fells in this area are and Skiddawvery popular with fell walkers. Wainwrights are the English peaks known locally as fells described in A. Summiting all of the Wainwrights is a popular form of peak bagging in the Lake District, along with the Birketts. Because both lists are based on historical books, unlike, for example, the Munrostheir constituents remain fixed, regardless of revisions to height or other metrics. In this regard, they are similar to the Scottish lowlandsDonalds. There are Wainwrights, of which are also classed as one of the Birketts. Wainwright did not state any rules about what should be included in his guides, choosing instead to note his walks according to his favour and their relevance in the landscape, never himself considering the summiting of all of them to be an important accomplishment for others. Birkinshaw's record was broken The Northern Fells: Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells Book 5 (Lake District & Cumbria) 20 June when Paul Tierney completed the round in 6 days 6 hours 4 minutes. The Eastern Fells are centered around Helvellyn and they primarily consist of a north- south ridge running between Ullswater and Lakeland's Central Valley. The Central Fells are situated in the heart of the Lake District, surrounded by the other ranges. The range extends from the ridge between Derwentwater and Thirlmere in the north, to the famous rock peaks of the Langdale Pikes in the south. The Northern Fells cover a circular area north of Keswick. The range is bordered to the west by Bassenthwaite Lakethe River Greta in the south and Caldew river bounds the eastern edge of the group, flowing away toward Carlisle. It is the smallest group by total number of hills. This new edition of the classic walking guide is Wainwright for the 21st century. Born in Blackburn inAlfred Wainwright left school at the age of A holiday at the age of 23 kindled a life-long love affair with the Lake District. Following a move to Kendal in he began to devote every spare moment he had to researching and compiling the original seven Pictorial Guides. He described these as his 'love letters' to the Lakeland Fells and at the end of the first, The Eastern Fells, he wrote about what the mountains had come to mean to him: I suppose it might be said, to add impressiveness to the whole thing, that this book has been twenty years in the making, for it is so long, and more, since I first came from a smoky mill-town forgive me, Blackburn! That was the first time I had looked upon beauty, or imagined it, even. Afterwards I went often, whenever I could, and always my eyes were lifted to the hills. I was to find then, and it has been so The Northern Fells: Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells Book 5 (Lake District & Cumbria) since, a spiritual and physical satisfaction in climbing mountains -- and a tranquil mind upon reaching their summits, as though I had escaped from the disappointments and unkindnesses of life and emerged above them into a new world, a better world. In due course I came to live within sight of the hills, and I was well content. If I could not be climbing, I was happy to sit idly and dream of them, serenely. Then came a restlessness and the feeling that it was not enough to take their gifts and do nothing in return. I must dedicate something of myself, the best part of me, to them. I started to write about them, and to draw pictures of them. Doing these things, I found they were still giving and I still receiving, for a great pleasure filled me when I was so engaged -- I had found a new way of escape to them and from all else less worth while. Thus it comes about that I have written this book. Not for material gain, welcome though that would be you see I have not escaped entirely! No, this book has been written, carefully The Northern Fells: Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells Book 5 (Lake District & Cumbria) with infinite patience, for my own pleasure and because it has seemed to bring the hills to my own fireside. If it has merit, it is because the hills have merit. Wainwright died in at the age of Chris Jesty trained as a cartographer with the Ordnance Survey. He devised Scafell Pike Panorama, a guide to the view from the highest mountain in England, for which Wainwright provided illustrations. When Wainwright's health deteriorated, Chris helped him with the maps for two of his large-format books. Shortly before he died, Wainwright said that if ever the Pictorial Guides were to be revised, Chris Jesty should be given the job. He lives in Kendal. Show more Show less. Pre-owned Pre-owned.
