At 4 years of age his father passed away and he continued his childhood on an isolated sheep station on Tolega Bay. He later attended both Dilworth School and Mount Albert Grammar in Auckland. Upon leaving school Hamish briefly worked on a chook farm and in the building trade before joining Sharlands Drug Company. During this time he holidayed on Norfolk Island in Christmas 1947 with three mates with the the DC3 aircraft only visiting from New Zealand every second Saturday. They’d met on Norfolk and on arrival in Auckland they continued to keep in contact. Mera returned to Norfolk in March of 1948 as her father had passed away. Later Hamish was passing through Norfolk on his way to Scotland to visit his fathers family - however he did not get any further and instead settled into the community. Quintal Real Estate Mangahoe Street, Te Awamutu, New Zealand PO Box 279 - Norfolk Island An Angel Took The Wheel. A friend of mine taught at a school in one of the tougher and poorer parts of the United States. In the Winter months she had to drive several miles home alone in the dark. When he could a thoughtful State Patrol Officer would frequently follow her in his car to ensure she arrived safely home. When she would turn into her driveway she would turn and wave to him, and he would drive off. One Wintery evening when the ground was wet with snow and sleet, the roads were very dangerous to drive on. Joan got into her car and drove slowly up and down the steep winding roads, behind her drove the police officer. When Joan reached home, instead of tooting his horn and driving off, the police car turned into her drive. “Who was that man sitting beside you in your car on the drive home, and where is he now” asked the policeman. Joan said “There’s no one with me.” “Oh yes there was, I could see him sitting beside you all the way home. I noticed that every time the car went into a skid he would lean over you and help steady the car.” The policeman stated. “It must have been an angel because God knows I needed help tonight.” Joan replied The officer walked around the car. There were no footprints anywhere. “It must have been” the officer said, “I‘ve seen everything now, I definitely saw some beside you.” Joan wrote me of this happening, and found a passage in the Bible. From what dangers seen and unseen, we have been preserved through the interposition of the angels, we shall never know, until in the light of eternity we see the providences of God. Then we shall know that the whole family of Heaven was interested in the family on Earth, and that messengers from the throne of God attended our steps from day to day. See you in church. MJC

Population…ailing or failing. (a contributed comment) In recent times questions have been raised about the apparently increasing numbers of families leaving Norfolk Island to reside on the mainland. There has been no substantial response from the Government. The economy of course revolves around people; they are economic contributors. Some groups more than others. For example an island family would in general stimulate more economic activity than say an itinerant family group as it is far more likely to invest in land, a house, a good car, a business, renovations etc than say a temporary worker; someone in full-time work will generally contribute more than someone in part-time employment. It is also widely acknowledged that some groups require more government support than others. Thus any changes in population make-up must be closely monitored and analysed by governments to ensure as much as possible that policy takes account of the socio- economic impact of the changes. That is why we have a census every 5 years. Following is a brief presentation and analysis of census data collected in Norfolk Island over the past 25 years. Clear trends and patterns are revealed. ………………………………………………. According to the census data Norfolk’s permanent population has risen by some 22% over the past 25 years (to 2006). This figure is somewhat distorted because the base figure for 1981 did not include a large number of immigrants who were already in Norfolk Island on temporary permits awaiting the lifting of the embargo on long term entry permits. Half of the increase occurred in the first five years during which this group was given permanent status and the remaining 11% increase occurred over the following 20 years. However the fact that there has been an increase in permanent population, albeit very minor, is not really the point. The most important thing to consider is the circumstances surrounding the change and the socio-economic impact of those circumstances. Briefly put the contributing circumstances seem to be a constantly increasing proportion of younger families having left and a constantly increasing lot of oldies replacing them. The relative size of the 25 to 44 years group for example, declined by 23.5% while the 55-65 year group increased by 35% and the 65+ years group by a whopping 77.5%. Census data reveals that the first five 10-year age groups have all decreased in relative size. (See fig.1) These changes have occurred not in a random and haphazard way but in a consistent and steady fashion over the long term. (See figs. 2 and 3) The trends remain evident in 2006. Had the trends been used in 2001 they would have predicted population outcomes in 2006 with some accuracy. If the trends remain intact for the next 20 years you could reasonably expect that the 65+ age group will increase in relative size by a further 35% and will comprise a quarter of our permanent population. The 25 to 44 year age group will fall by a further 29%. Over 20 years the

economic contribution of those in full-time work (35 hours+) will have fallen in line with the 11% reduction in the size of that group. Because of the clear correlation between the size of the 65+ age group and the number of Norfolk Island pensioners (See fig.4) some predictions can be made about pensioner numbers and cost increases. For example over the next 10 years a reasonable expectation is that pensioner numbers will increase by over 30%. Add to this a marginal inflation rate of say 35% (the Norfolk Island RPI actually moved 53% in the last 10 years) and the social welfare costs can be expected to increase by some 75%. The fact that the number of Australian pensioners in Norfolk Island is diminishing at a constant pace (also see fig. 4) can only accelerate this cost increase. Of course statistics can be presented in a variety of ways and governments can come up with a variety of interpretations and policy adjustments. This analysis is but one method however it is safe to say that alarming trends would become evident and incapable of being ignored, whatever way an extraction and analysis is done.

The trends will have had and will likely continue to have, an adverse impact on the social and economic fabric of the Norfolk population. Comments thus far from the present government or any government before it have acknowledged neither the trends nor the impacts. Let’s look at Norfolk Island as a business. All businesses face either a demand problem or a supply problem. Their problem is either too few customers or a difficulty in supplying the customers they have. Norfolk Inc has a demand problem and the problem is affecting a lot of individual business enterprises on the island. Here is a taste of a day in a rural hospital in Zambia, Chom Cha Ba where I recently worked with David Friend, a surgeon from New Zealand: Poor Ethel had a pelvic abscess a month earlier, treated in Lusaka. She came to us in Mukinge Hospital, which was near her home village. She was thin, sore Licensed and feverish. Her belly was swollen and tender, inside was a most horrible find. A large gauze swab. Surrounded by a couple of cupfuls of pus. Everybody NEW felt bad. Ethel felt bad, though she was mercifully Thai Deep Fried unconscious. Digging out the swab was like like Icecream $6.50 peeling hot beetroot. Ethel woke the next day much better, and went home a few days later. Evermore was happier. She sitted in front of the fire and only burnt her arm, rather than her whole body as often happens. Nobody will touch somebody during a Hot Buffet convulsion for fear that they will become possessed by the same spirit that is causing the convulsion. A shave $19.50 of skin fixed Evermore in a flash. Poor Blessing was sad with guilt. Nights were cold in the village. They had few blankets. She had fallen New menu every asleep in front of the fire with her 5-month-old baby Cindy cradled in her arms, and the wood in the fire Saturday had slipped down and caught Cindy’s clothes on fire. World Suicide Prevention Day is an annual event sponsored by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with the World Health Organization. This year the theme is “Suicide Prevention across the Life Span”. BE AWARE OF THE FACTS Suicide is preventable. Most suicidal individuals desperately want to live; they are just unable to see alternatives to their problems and pain. Most suicidal individuals give definite warnings of their suicidal intentions, but others are either unaware of the significance of these warnings or do not know how to respond to them. Talking about suicide does not cause someone to be suicidal. Over 2000 Australians, and more than 500 New Zealanders, kill themselves every year. The number of suicide attempts is much greater and often results in serious injury. Suicide occurs in all age groups. In adults worldwide, suicide is a leading cause of death, accounting for more deaths than all wars and homicides combined. Four times as many men kill themselves as compared to women, yet three times as many women attempt suicide as compared to men. Suicide occurs across all age, economic, social, and ethnic boundaries. The reasons for living and for dying are often much the same, but the methods of dying may differ, and so may the cultural expectation about seeking help. Many who consider suicide would prefer to find a way to live. Help offered is vital. Surviving family members not only suffer the trauma of losing a loved one to suicide, they may themselves be at higher risk for suicide and emotional problems.
