Victoria Gives Locks of Love SHE DID IT! Victoria Walsh, eight years old, patiently grew her hair so she could donate it to LOCKS OF LOVE, a non- profit organization that pro- vides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss. She was inspired by friends who donat- ed their hair and also in mem- ory of her Aunt “Doll,” who lost her battle with cancer a few years ago. Victoria, a third grader at Mills Pond Elementary, had her hair cut and styled at Sivana Salon in St. James. Her par- ents, Dawn and Brian and her two brothers, Christopher and Brian, are so proud of her compassion and kindness. And her new haircut looks great. Victoria Walsh before andafter.

Dog bite vic- tims account for up to 5% of emergency room visits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 2% of Americans are bitten by a dog each year, and most of the victims are children. If a letter carrier needs to inter- act with you, put your dog into a separate room before opening your front door. Dogs have been known to burst through screen doors or plate-glass windows to get at letter carriers and strangers. Letter carriers are vigilant and dedicated, but we may be forced to stop mail delivery at an address if a letter carrier is threat- ened by a vicious dog. In some instances, Postal Service employ- ees have sued and collected dam- ages for dog bite injuries. We can’t control people’s dogs; only dog owners can do that. While some attribute attacks on letter carriers to dogs’ inbred aversion to uniforms, experts say the psychology actually runs much deeper. Every day that a letter carrier comes into a dog’s territory, the dog barks and the letter carrier leaves. Day after day the dog sees this action repeated. After a week or two, the dog appears to feel invincible against intruders. Once the dog gets loose, there’s a good chance it will attack. Dog owners should remind their children about the need to keep the family dog secured. We continued on facing page

Music therapy has been shown to help in the healing process of a variety of ailments or conditions, be they physical or mental. Research- ers at the Institute for Music Therapy in Germany, for instance, studied the effects of music therapy when used to treat children with developmental delay. Researchers studied a group of 12 children between 4 and 6.5 years of age with developmental ages between 1 to 3.5 years. They were able to note the effects of musical therapy on the childrens' development, which showed significant improvements, including better hearing and speech and improved hand-eye coordination in the children after exposure to the therapy. Music therapy has also proven effective in treating depression in older patients. A study by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine con- cluded that music therapy showed great potential as a beneficial intervention for homebound elderly people who have limited access to healthcare profes- sionals.

The Four Seasons On Borrowed Time

The last few days have been wet and cold, I feel our lives have been loaned to us Unusual for this time of year. For how long we really don’t know But then again, Mother Nature’s in charge, But I’m sure when it’s pay back time And she’ll work it all out, never fear. We’ll know when we have to go.

I’m hoping for the sun to shine, We’re not told how long we have With the white puffy clouds in the sky. To accomplish our goals on Earth As the birdies chirp and the flowers bloom And before we are repossessed And the colors all fill up my eye. We should live life for all it’s worth.

I’m a big fan of the four seasons, So you should cherish each day But really, summer’s the one I like best. Don’t pull any crazy stunts No matter how hot and steamy it is, You should make the most of it because I’ll take it above all the rest. You’ll see this day only once.

It never gets too hot for me, because, – John Taratunio I always remember this rule... Fairfield Condos No matter what the heat and humidity, Think of February and you will feel COOL!
