Netflix Leads All with Ten Wins at 2021 Golden Globes Netflix Leads All With Ten Wins at 2021 Golden Globes 02.28.2021 Netflix dominated the 78th annual Golden Globes on Sunday night with ten wins total out of an overall 25 on offer. The streaming service won best TV drama for The Crown, best limited series for The Queen's Gambit and got to take a little bit of credit for Schitt's Creek, which originated in the U.S. on cable network Pop but gained popularity on Netflix. It also scored some wins in the film categories, including best screenwriting for Aaron Sorkin and his The Trial of the Chicago 7 and best actor for the late Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. The Golden Globes took place after the Los Angeles Times published a scathing article about the organization that awards them, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for questionable ethics, including taking payola, and having had no Black members in its entire history. "The HFPA is made up of around 90 international-no Black-journalists who attend movie junkets each year in search of a better life," said co-host Tina Fey during the opening monologue. "So, let's see what these European weirdos nominated this year." The show was shot with Fey at the Rainbow Room in New York and Amy Poehler at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Both hosts had small audiences of masked first responders and frontline workers in the room, all seated at safe social distances. Overall, the show was glitchy, with lots of audio problems and winners wondering if they were still on mute. While The Crown has been a favorite with the HFPA, best actor and best actress wins for Emma Corrin and Josh O'Connor as Princess Diana and Prince Charles felt like upsets, with Corrin beating her castmate and Golden Globe, Emmy and Oscar winner Olivia Colman. Gillian Anderson also won best supporting actress in a TV drama, movie or limited series for her portrayal of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the series. John Boyega won this award on the actor's side for Amazon's anthology series, Small Axe, directed by Oscar winner Steve McQueen. Besides winning best limited series, Queen's Gambit star and double nominee Anya-Taylor Joy was named best actress in a limited series for her portrayal of an orphan who turns out to be a chess prodigy. Mark Ruffalo won this award among actors for HBO's I Know This Much Is True, in which he played twin brothers, one of whom has schizophrenia. On the comedy side, Schitt's Creek continued its victory lap after its Emmy sweep in September, with Catherine O'Hara also scoring her first Globe win for best actress in a comedy. Jason Sudeikis won best actor in a comedy for Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso. On the movie side, Chloe Zhao's Oscar frontrunner Nomadland cemented that status Sunday night with a win for best dramatic motion picture as well as for Zhao as best director. Best musical or comedy was given to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, with that movie's star, Sasha Baron Cohen, winning best actor in a comedy. Andra Day won best actress in a motion picture for her starring role in The United States vs. Billie Holliday, making her the first Black woman to win in this category since Whoopi Goldberg in 1986 for The Color Purple. Daniel Kaluuya won best supporting actor in a film for Judas and the Black Messiah, while Jodie Foster was named best supporting actress for The Mauritanian..

In the pledge the high profile women, who also include activists and politicians, have vowed to support: • An investigation into rape and sexual violence by the Burmese military against ethnic women and girls. • An end to impunity for rape and other forms of sexual violence in Burma. • Support for victims. • The inclusion of women at every political level in Burma including the peace negotiations between the Burmese government and the ethnic armed political groups. • Burma’s Rape Law to be in line with international human rights standards to outlaw rape in marriage. Rape and sexual violence by the Burmese army • The use of rape and sexual violence by Burma’s armed forces is ongoing with impunity and reports of rape have increased over the last years. • Although winning a landslide victory in national elections in November 2015, the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, will not have control over the Burmese army when it takes office in April 2016. Therefore, there is a possibility that army rape will continue even with the new NLD-led government in place.

By Nathalie Atkinson, Vanessa Farquharson, Shinan Govani, Ben Kaplan, Chris Knight, Adam McDowell, Katherine Monk, Jay Stone and Bob Thompson Best festival motto OK, there is only one: For the love of film. But it’s so flexible. Say it in a straight voice and it’s about how much you enjoy movies. Add a sarcastic tone and it doubles as an epithet for when you’ve just been turned away from a party, or had your cab snatched by Julianne Moore: “Oh, for the love of film!” C.K.
