Abstract

Lander.N. S. Astemceaespecimens collected bv Johanr AugustLudwig Preiss Kingia 1(1):9-19 (1987) All specimensofAsteraceae collected by J. A. L. Preissdufing his visit lo WestemAustralia from 1838to 1842 (LD) (G) listed. For eachspecimen the odginal Preissfieldcollec locafedin herbariaat Lund and Geneva are "Plantae tion number (if cited) and th€ number ,.rnderwhich it is recoded in Lehmann's Prcissianae"are noled as well as its type status, location and current name. "Plantae Of a total of 11? Preiss Astemceaespecimens located at LD, 57 are types of taxa describedin Preissianae".Of 80 such specimensheld at G, 40 are t)'pes. Preissspecimens of Oleadaspecies located ai CGE, CO, FL,K,L, MEL, P and WRSL and are also listed It is sugge;redthatthe extent ofPreiss specimensrepresented at K maybe far greaterthan hashithefto been realised.

Introduction In the courseof my year as Australian Botanical Liaison Officer at Kew, 1984-5,I visited severalEuropean herbaria, principally in order to examinespecirnens of OIea a, the genusI am currently revising. In herbariaat the Botaniska Museum,Lund (LD) and the Conservatoireet Jardin Botaniques,Geneva (G) I am confident that I havelocated all, or nearly all of the specimensof Asteraceaecollected by the German naturalist Johann August Ludwig Preissduring his visit to from 1838to 1842. Since a large proportion of these specimensare types of taxa describedin J. G. C. Lehmann's"Plantae Preissianae"(1844-8) I presentthe following list of rny findings as being of generalinterest.

Discussion An account of Preiss's activities in Australia has been presentedby McGillivray (1975).General background concerning the specimensat Lund and evidencethat they are in fact from Lehmann's personal herbarium has been given by Wilson (1983)and Crisp (1983). As can be seenfrom the abovelist the representationat Lund of Asteraceaecollected by Preiss is high indeed.Of 142 collectionsrecorded in "Plantae Preissianae"115 are representedat Lund, 57 ofwhich are types oftaxa describedtherein, 55 by J. Steetz, the botanist responsiblefor the account of Asteraceae, one by Nees and one by Lehmann himself. Each of these specimenshas full details of Iocality and date correspondingto those in "Plantae Preissianae".Furthermore, eachhas beenannotated by Steetz. Thus, as Crisp (1983)argues, where lectotlpifrcation has not yet been made the Lund speci- mens have equal status with those from Steetz'sown herbarium (now at MEL) and should be consideredwhen names from "Plantae Preissianae"are lectotlpified. A further two PreissAsteraceae specimens were found at Lund which lack the num- bers and collecting details that would allow them to be related to those recorded in "Plantae Preissianae". At the Genevaherbadum a large suite of PreissAsteraceae specimens was locatedin the main collection.A smaller number bearing what appearto be original Preiss field numberswere found amongstundetermined material at the end of the family. Several more similarly numberedsheets of Asteraceaewere found at other European herbaria visited. These collections,23 in all, spanthe period17 December1838 to 8 November 1840,and the numbersare in an irregular chronologicalorder. In somecases these speci- mens bear detiailsof Iocality and date which allow them to be correlatedwith those of "Plantae Preissianae":others reDresenttaxa not consideredthere. The Preissspecimens at Genevaappear to havecome from four independentsources, namery: (a) specimenswith PlantaePreissianae numbers labelled "in col. SwanRiver" in ar.r unknown hand, received in 1843, with separate labels bearing Plantae Preissianaenames; (b) specimenswith Plantae Preissianaenumbers and names, and printed labels reading"Mr L. Preiss,Swan River, 1837-40"; (c) specimenswith Preiss'originalnumbers, labelled with full detailsoflocality and date in an unknown hand, without names, each with a secondprinted label reading"Swan-River Colony. - NouvelleHolland 1839-1840,Preis.", received in July 1842; (d) specimensdonated by the Candollefamily in 1921with Preiss'original num- bers, labelled "Nov. Holland., Swan River", without date, without names, receivedin 1854,each with "Ferd. Muller" crossedout, somewith numbertags. Clearly, series (a) and (c) abovewere distributed not long after Preissreturnedto Eur- ope in early 1842where the generalsystematic arrangement of his collectionswas com- pleted and the organisationof "Plantae Preissianae"commenced under the guidance and supeNisionof Lehmann at Hamburg. It seemslikely that the name labelsfor sedes (a) were provided at somelater date, perhapsafter publication of the relevant parts of "Plantae Preissianae". Of the 80 Preiss Asteraceaespecimens located at Geneva,40 are types of taxa de- scdbed in "Plantae Preissianae" In the courseof my examination of specimensof Oleariain Europeanherbaria I en- counteredPreiss collectionsin CGE, CO, FI, K, L and P. These are listed above. 18 KingiaVol. I, No.1 (198?)

It is worth noting here that Preiss' Asteraceaespecimens held at Florence (FI) are Iabelled"Comm. dal SignorePreiss in Febrio 1846"and bear Plantae Preissianaenum- bers and names. It seemsthat Preiss himself was distributing material as late as 1846. This and the preceding observationsprovide confirmation of Crisp's (1983) surmise that material not distdbuted to the various authors of "Plantae Preissianae"was re- tained by Preiss and offered for sale. Burbidge (1972)has cataloguedPreiss specimens held at Kew and Missouri (MO). In her list only a single OleariacolIecdon is noted for Kew. However,I myself encountered a total of five Preiss OJeariaspecimens at Kew. The additional four bear Preiss field numbers which, by virtue of the collection details, can easily be related to those of "Plantae Preissianae".Presumably they are from amongst specimenspurchased by William Hooker in London beforePreiss continued on to Hamburg. Thus they might be expectedtobear Preissfield numbersratherthan thoseallocated later by Lehmann. Although this sampleis rather small it suggeststhat the total ofPreiss specimensrep- resentedat Kew may be far greater than has hitherto been realised. All the PreissAsteraceae specimens at Lund of tlpe statuswere photographed. Black and white negatives and pdnts are Iodged at the Western Australian Herbariurn (PERTH).

Acknowledgements This study was madepossible by the travel componentof funds providedby the Aus- tralian Bureau of Flora and Fauna (Department of Home Affairs and Environment) during my tour of duty as Australian Botanical Liaison Officer, 1984-5.I am especially grateful to Prof. Sven Snogerupand his staff at the Botaniska Museum, Lund, to the late Prof. Gilbert Boquet and to Dr Manfred Dittrich of the Conservatoireet Jardins Botaniques, Geneva for their hospitality and assistanceduring my visits to their herbaria. I wish to thank Mr P. G. Wilson for confirming my identification of certain matedal bo[owed from Geneva.
