Sunday Service Fourth Sunday in Creation Time Readings: Esther 7:1-6, 9-10, 9:20-22; Mark 9:38-50 Jesus’s abolition of “us” and “them” categories is so radical that it seems almost impossible for us to comprehend and put into practice.

October 7th is Thanksgiving and World Communion Sunday. Readings: 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Matthew 6:25-33

We are looking for volunteers to help serve Communion. You can be singles, couples or families – all are welcome! We need enough people for two serving stations (minimum of four people). You would arrive by 10:10 when we meet in the kitchen and sort out duties. We then set the table, serve the elements during the service and return the elements and dishes to the kitchen after the service.

If you are interesting in taking part, please contact Chris Burbridge as soon as possible. ([email protected])

What Does Hope Look Like? Join the Capital Grannies for an inspirational afternoon viewing the film “The Thinking Garden,” about a South African community garden, and finding out about community gardens in the Ottawa area Sunday, September 30, 3:00 p.m., St. Paul’s University amphitheatre, 223 Main Street.

The award-winning movie “The Thinking Garden,” produced by Elizabeth Vibert, historian and professor in Victoria, B.C., and Metis filmmaker Christine Welsh, is a story about three generations of South African women creating a communal garden and a gathering place for women to think about effecting change in the context of poverty, climate change and HIV/AIDs. Elizabeth got to know the farmers at the Hleketani Community Garden over some years while conducting oral history research. These older women had taken matters into their own hands to produce food locally for the most vulnerable people. They asked Elizabeth whether she would be doing a film about them and so she contacted Christine, who saw in their story many parallels to the work she has done documenting the historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous women in Canada.

When Elizabeth showed the completed film to the women of the Hleketani Community Garden, they declared: “It’s like a miracle … we never dreamed we would see something like this for our farm.” These South African women have drawn on remarkable reserves of strength, courage and resilience in answering Christine’s question: “What does hope look like?”

To complement this story of a South African community garden, local Ottawa people will be telling their own stories of their community gardens. The volunteers who work in the Shepherds of Good Hope community garden, which supplies vegetables for the soup kitchen all summer, as well as participants from the Parkdale Food Centre, Growing Futures, Just Food and the Karen Farm, will talk about their work.

Please join us for a thought-provoking afternoon! Tickets $20 are available through Janice Vennos ([email protected]) 613-225-1201 or through Capital Grannies, ([email protected]) 613-523-8631. All proceeds go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Dear MHI supporters,

We wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for your outpouring of concern and care for our tenants, and inform everyone that – despite the same extended loss of power that many west-end communities experienced – our tenants made it through the situation this weekend relatively unscathed. We hope and pray that all of you are safe, and recovering from whatever trial might have presented itself to you.

While most people are cleaning spoiled food out of their fridges, we are aware that this food loss hits a lot harder for those who struggle to make ends meet in the first place, and don't have the resources to replace it. Therefore, we would like to help our Haven tenants living in subsidized units replace some of their spoiled food. We have put a small plan in place to help them, and you can assist us in two ways:

1. Grocery gift cards: You can drop off or mail gift cards to either the Haven office (435 Via Verona Ave.) or MHI's main office in Vanier (404 McArthur Ave.). Cards preferred from grocery stores located near 435 Via Verona. For those who wish to make a large donation, multiple cards in smaller amounts ($10 or $20) are preferred, as it will be easier to distribute the cards fairly among Haven households. 2. Donate online to help MHI purchase gift cards: Please visit www.multifaithhousing.ca/donate to make a contribution online. Select our temporary fund "Ottawa Tornado Damage (new)".

We will be collecting funds until this Friday (September 28) so we can divvy up and distribute the food cards in a timely fashion.

Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to accept food donations at this time.

A special thank you to staff and volunteers who assisted MHI this past weekend, including the Sequoia Community Church and South Nepean Muslim Community. Our concerns, thoughts and prayers go out to residents and business owners in Ottawa who are still struggling with the tornado's aftermath.

Best wishes, MHI Office Staff
