TRANSITION GUIDE SUMMER 2021 WELCOME KEY STAFF INFO LIFE

ASH MAPLE OAK ROWAN

Welcome to Burnage for Boys

It is with the greatest of pleasure that as the Headteacher of Burnage Academy for Boys, I am able to introduce myself to you all. I am delighted that your son has been offered a place here and I am incredibly proud and fortunate to lead such a fantastic school. We are the highest performing school you could have chosen for your son from the 25 schools available in and are in the top 3% in the North West of England. We are one of only four schools in Manchester that is OFSTED Outstanding and the only one that has been graded Outstanding in the last three years. However, we are much more than that, we are fundamentally about Care and the proudest thing for me is that our boys are happy and know that they are truly valued and supported every day. Mr Karl Harrison Due to current circumstances, some of our usual welcome events have had to be delayed, but rest assured everyone at Burnage will Headteacher support you and your son to ensure you have everything you need for a successful transition to secondary school.

The House System

Every pupil who attends Burnage Academy For Boys is allocated a form group within a house. Each house is made up of pupils from across year groups and is identified by a different colour tie. Boys remain in the same form and house for the duration of their time at school.

The house system allows pupils to receive the best pastoral care and academic monitoring, whilst also encouraging group loyalty and teamwork with competitive events such as sports day and inter- house sports competitions. There are four houses at Burnage Academy For Boys: Ash, Maple, Oak and Rowan.

Behaviour and Rewards

We are proud of the way our pupils behave in our school, which has contributed to our academic outcomes being some of the highest for boys in the Northwest region. We set very high standards for our pu- pils and expect them to behave well at all times but recognise effort in working towards this goal. Our ’etiquettes’ were designed and agreed by staff and pupils at the school and form the basis of our be- haviour system. Teachers regularly reward pupils with etiquette praise postcards and have regular celebration assemblies and reward trips. Our behaviour philosophy is that we try to 'catch the pupils being good' whilst also being rigorous at challenging and supporting pupils who need help to meet our etiquettes. You can be reassured as a parent/carer that we strive for all pupils to behave in a respectful and polite manner to all in the school commu- nity, working with you closely to achieve this goal.

"Pupils behave well in lessons, which helps all to learn." Ofsted, 2018

Class Charts The school uses Class Charts to monitor and log positive and negative behaviour.

Students earn positive points that can then be spent in the school shop. The shop sells a variety of items to suit all budgets including stationery, books and electronics.

Students will be provided with login details at the start of the year.

Safeguarding

Our number one priority is that your son is safe at the school and thrives. Our House system means your son will have a year 7 form tutor, a year 7 transition lead and a dedicated House Leader to en- sure that he is safe and happy.

As well as this unique offer, we have a strong team of mentors and trained social work staff on site who are there to help your son and your family make the transition to Burnage Academy for Boys a suc- cess.

Our safeguarding and pastoral curriculum has been written and de- signed with the needs of our pupils firmly in mind, as we see that teaching your son to thrive in adult life is equally important to ensur- ing that he reaches his academic potential.

There are clear systems in place to support you and your son and a rigorous and successful anti-bullying approach, as evidenced in our recent Ofsted inspection. This contributes to the harmonious and safe community we have at the school.

"The school is a harmonious community. Pupils accept and value each other." Ofsted, 2018

Personal Development

At Burnage, we pride ourselves on the wide range of opportunities that students are given. We know that students who experience the world around them are the most successful, developing essential skills that will help them in all areas of their life.

“The Burnage community will strive to prepare all members for the world of Manchester and beyond. They will gain a sense of place by understanding where Manchester has come from and how they can contribute to its future.” SMSC We believe young people should be given frequent opportunities to prepare for the world beyond school. We dedicate almost 100 hours of learning to the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development of our students, and at no cost to families.

We allocate 10% of KS3 curriculum time on visits and activities outside school, giving students the chance to explore the people, history and culture of our city and beyond.

Recent activities include: canoeing on the River Mersey, a walking tour of Manchester’s architecture, a Blackpool culture trip, a visit to Quarry Bank Mill, watching the orchestra perform at Bridgewater Hall. PSHE and All students at Burnage follow a curriculum which includes Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) RSE education, and statutory Relationships and Sex Education. Our curriculum is designed to strengthen students’ independence and resilience and develop understanding and care for being a positive citizen in Manchester and the world beyond. School Our school has a Smart School Council, which means that it is led entirely by students and every student is Council involved. There are regular class meetings held in form time and a student communication team that keeps everyone up-to-date. The real stars are the student action team leaders - they set up their own groups and develop brilliant leadership and organisational skills.

Further Information

Travelling to School Students are encouraged to walk or bike to school as part of the Healthy Schools initiative. There is a bike shed that students can use and we recommend a suitable lock is used to secure their bike at the start of the day.

For students travelling by public transport, an IGO pass is required to travel at a reduced rate on buses, trains and trams. It must be carried on all journeys and shown to the driver before purchasing a ticket.

IGO passes cost £10 and are valid until a child is 16.

For more information and to apply, please visit the TfGM website: https://www.tfgm.com/ tickets-and- passes/igo-pass

Free School Meals To help the Council and schools identify a student’s entitlement to free school meals, a new Online Free School Meal Checker has been introduced to apply for Free School Meals.

Once you have completed this application the school will be kept informed of your Free School Meal entitlement automatically throughout the whole of their time at school.

We recommend that you complete an application before the start of the academic year.

Applications should be made here: https://www.cloudforedu.org.uk/ofsm/sims/

Parent Pay All financial transactions at Burnage are made through an online payment system called Parent Pay. It’s a simple, safe and convenient system that means your child no longer needs to carry cash into school. Simply top-up your ParentPay account online by debit or credit card, or in cash through PayPoint stores. The school will provide each family with an activation letter, that must then be accessed through the Parent Pay website. https://www.parentpay.com/ BE OUTSTANDING
