Benedikt, ACSA Distinguished Professor, Director, Center for American Architecture and Design,University of Texas at Austin Abstract Published in 1996* but not widely read, this article argues that space and information are so deeply related that the universe at every moment is exactly and only as large as it needs to be to “contain” the information it in fact is. Using three thought experiments—one about data visualization, one about cellular automata and consciousness, and one about the analysis of architectural space using isovists, each experiment blurring (or rather, uniting) the phenomena of psychological and physical space, the article argues that what we experience as “space” is that set of dimensions which provides the largest capacity for the world’s other qualities, objects, and events to express their variety most fully. The natural universe is incompressible, expanding only as, and because, it becomes richer in information (i.e. cools and evolves). Imaginary and virtual worlds obey the same rule: they are “naturally” as big as they are rich in information. But the possibility exists in cyberspace—as it does not in nature—to choose which dimensions will serve as the spatial framework, and which will become/appear as properties of the things themselves. Data visualizers know this well. One wonders why virtual worlds to this day look so similar to ours, then, rather than to the one envisaged by William Gibson in 1984 and 1986 and which he called “cyberspace.” A failure of architectural nerve? Archive of SID University of Tabriz-Iran Journal of Philosophical Investigations ISSN (print): 2251-7960/ (online): 2423-4419 Vol. 12/ No. 24/ fall 2018 Postmodernism, Philosophy and Literature* Hossein Sabouri** Associate Professor, University of Tabriz, Iran Abstract No special definite definition does exist for postmodernism however it has had an inordinate effect on art, architecture, music, film, literature, philosophy, sociology, communications, fashion, and technology. The main body of this work can be seen as an admiration and reverence for the values and ideals associated with postmodern philosophy as well as postmodern literature. , I have argued that postmodern has mainly influenced philosophy and literature and they are recognized and praised for their multiplicity. Postmodernism might seem exclusive in its work, its emphasis on multiplicity and the decentered subject makes very uncomfortable reading for traditional theorists or philosophers. It rejects western values and beliefs as only small part of the human experience and it rejects such ideas, beliefs, culture and norms of the western. Integrity is fragmented apart into unharmonious narratives which lead to a shattering of identity and an overall breakdown of any idea of the self. Relativism and Self- reflexivity have replaced self-confidence due to the postmodern belief that all representation distorts reality. I have also referred that in a sense; postmodernism is a part of modernism we find the instantaneous coexistence of these two methods of expression and thinking, especially in visual arts and literature. Postmodern Perspectives And Shifting Legal Paradigms: Searching For A Critical Theory Of Juvenile Justice Karen L. Michaelis Department of Educational Leadership & Counseling Psychology, Washington State University, USA Abstract The tension between law’s rationality, objectivity, abstraction and principle, and feminism’s irrationality, subjectivity, contextualisation and personal nature is at the core of attempts by critical legal theorists to define a legal system that seeks justice by giving voice and credibility to heretofore silenced members of groups historically excluded or penalised for their outsider status. Outsider and feminist legal scholars have tackled the difficult issues of exclusion embedded in the law. Outsider legal scholars contend that the sameness/difference debate perpetuates racial stereotypes that justify the law’s impact on members of racial groups by ignoring the impact varying contexts have on giving meaning to an event. Similarly, feminist legal scholars have advocated for a more conscientious legal system that considers community and multiple perspectives as a means of overcoming the bias women experience when they negotiate their way through the judicial system. Both of these perspectives provide a starting point for a less mechanistic, more personal and contextualised approach to juvenile justice. But unlike women and minorities, juveniles will never have the political power to force changes in the juvenile justice system. Therefore, the author proposes that a new critical theory of juvenile justice, based on elements of both feminist and outsider legal theories, is necessary to ensure that juveniles are treated fairly and appropriately based on their unique characteristics coupled with the particular context within which the legal issue to be resolved by the justice system arose. -

Buckley’s volume seeks to utilize selected writings from the comprehensive works of this Yale University professor in an effort to display the radical nature of Lindbeck’s theology. The essays chosen date between 1968 and 1997, representing thirty years of Lindbeck’s contributions to the greater body of theological literature. Central to both the writings of Lindbeck and to the annotations of editor James Buckley is the issue of ecumenism and the specific role of the Lutheran church in fostering Christian unity. -

ST BASIL’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE TRINITARIAN DOCTRINE: A SYNTHESIS OF GREEK PAIDEIA AND THE SCRIPTURAL WORLDVIEW Philip Kariatlis Abstract: St Basil’s contribution to the formulation of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity has long been acknowledged in the Christian tradition. Indeed, he was responsible for articulating the ‘orthodox’ vision of God with theological and philosophical originality that truly laid the foundations upon which the way of pondering the Trinitarian mystery in the East was established. His achievement lay in his remarkable ability to ennoble the culture of the day with the Christian message without in any way compromising the latter. This paper explores the Trinitarian theology of St Basil with a view towards highlighting the harmonious synthesis of Greek paideia and the scriptural worldview. ndeniably, the Church’s teaching on the mystery of the Holy Trinity stands at the very heart of Christian belief. Indeed, Uit has rightly been recognised as Christianity’s differentia specifica, namely that specific teaching which clearly distinguishes the 1 Christian faith from all other forms of monotheism. Notwithstanding the importance of this teaching and the fact that it is firmly rooted in the Scriptures, it nevertheless took the early Church many years to acquire a clearly articulated theology of the Trinitarian mystery. The need for precise terminology particularly emerged when the Church had to define with accuracy in what way the one God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob – namely, the Father almighty – was related to Jesus Christ – who was professed to be God’s only begotten Son, his eternal Word and Image – PHRONEMA, VOL. -

CONTEMPORARY UNDERSTANDING OF THE IRREFORMABILITY OF DOGMA The Catholic Church, being committed to the view that Christ provided for an abiding living magisterium to herald in an authori- tative way the revelation fully communicated in apostolic times, has throughout its history been obliged to defend its position against two sets of adversaries. On one flank are the archaists, who maintain that the apostolic faith, as set forth in the Bible, admits of no further dogmatic development. On the other flank are the rationalists and modernists who contend that the native ability of the human intelli- gence to achieve progress in all fields demands that the Church should not commit itself to any past revelation as permanently normative for the present and the future. In the time of Pius IX the Roman magisterium had to address itself to both these sets of adversaries. In several authoritative documents the Holy See made use of the phrase of Vincent of Lerins that the Church's teaching evolves homogeneously in eodetn scilicet dogmate, eodern sensu, eademque sententia (DS 3020; cf. DS 3802, 3043). This formula, like the Chalcedonian definition regarding the two natures of Christ, is not so much a solution as an effort to ward off simplistic solutions that would suppress one aspect or the other of the question. Further probing is necessary in order to discern how dogma remains self-identical while evolving. The term "irreformability," to which I have been asked to address myself, has been familiar to all Catholic theologians since Vatican Council I. In its Constitution on the Church, Pastor Aeternus, the Council declared that the definitions of the Roman pontiff are irre- formable, not by reason of the consent of the Church, but ex sese (DS 3074). -

Stanley Hauerwas: Against Secularization in the Church Zeitschrift für Dialektische Theologie ◆ Heft 59 ◆ Jahrgang 29 ◆ Nummer 2 ◆ 2013 Herman Paul In May 2007, theologian Stanley Hauerwas addressed a packed audi- ence at Princeton Theological Seminary.1 Frowning behind his glasses, Hauerwas began his talk by firing a volley of uncomfortable questions: “How many of you worship in a church with an American flag? I am sorry to tell you your salvation is in doubt. How many of you worship in a church in which the Fourth of July is celebrated? I am sorry to tell you your salvation is in doubt. How many of you worship in a church that recognizes Thanksgiving? I am sorry to tell you your salvation is in doubt.” And so the speaker went on, to the consternation and amuse- ment of his audience, ending his accusations, less than two weeks before Mother’s Day, with the timely question: “How many of you worship in a church that recognizes ‘Mother’s Day’? I am sorry to tell you your salva- tion is in doubt.”2 These words seem characteristic, not merely of Hauerwas’s polemical style and fondness for hyperbolic metaphors, but also of the American context in which the theologian operates. Hauerwas is an American theo- logian, engaged in American debates, and always addressing American audiences or, as I shall argue, American Christians who, in Hauerwas’s assessment, better know how to be American than how to be Christian. This is not just an incidental circumstance.
